Give to time. Once Microsoft opens their retail stores, I'm sure they'll copy the robberies too. :p

I shudder to think of the band of robbers who selectively target Microsoft... maybe they'll all have matching tattoos?

I don't understand why Apple would be so stupid that they wouldn't install a set of roll down metal bars. If you have a simple glass door, thousands of dollars of merchandise that won't be hard to sell especially since back to school fever is going on. What the hell do you think is going to happen? Not to mention all the lights were on ;] just teasing those individuals, all the best stuff just sitting there on the table, a unarmed security guard, and people who obviously had some clue of what they wanted and how to get it all thrown in the mix. Apple might know how to build a thin and light notebook but in the end of this story =] it just make it easier to haul a$$ when they needed too.

Not Surprised.

Every time I go to an apple store I always thought it would be too easy to break into the store, its made of glass after all...

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0_1 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A400 Safari/528.16)

I doubt Microsofts stores will EVER be robbed!!
They don't have stores. And their planned stores are more like information centres than stores. A little research before posting would be greatly appreciated.

Am I the only one who finds all the bloodlust in this thread highly distasteful..?

Give the security guy a taser, by all means, but shoot a guy dead for pinching a few computers..? Perspective, please...

Thankyou. I'm glad I'm not the only one.

I really don't understand the idea of killing people.

The stupid thing was the window. Why not have tempered glass? A rock or even a hammer would not break tempered glass.

Ummm yes it would, that is why it is fitted in car side windows, so that in the event of an RTA, the emergency services can smash the window easily.

LAMINATED glass on the other hand...

I saw New Jersey and immediately knew it was a crime related thread :)

Anyway, something needs to be done to make an example out of people who do this. Too often do people get away with robbing stores. Solution? Guns. If the security guard had been walking around with a semi-automatic rifle or a shotgun this would have NEVER happened. The only thing punks like these kids understand is firepower. Wave a taser in their face and they will probably beat you to death. Wave a powerful gun in their face and they will be out that door faster than they made it in.

What would have happened if the kids had been shot up? Would you likely see any copycat crimes at the Apple store? Would a criminal ever steal from this Apple store again? But instead what do we have? We have a video showing how easy it is to rob a building made from glass that uses no security locks. Wonderful.

Quit with the "his life is worth more than those laptops" BS. Those 5 peoples lives are worth $0. This isn't the first time they have done this s***, and it won't be the last. They are worthless people. I wouldn't give the change in my pocket to save them as they have caused undue hardship on peoples lives for their own personal pleasure. They are what is wrong with society today. People like this NEED to be made an example of and punching holes in them with a shotgun would have done just that.

And the likelihood is that all that would happen is that the first thing the thieves would do is shoot the guard. Not a good idea.

DAMN! those thieves are quick. but what to do with all those macbooks. can't sell em. got no chargers. i'm guessing there thinking "damn what to do with em. we only have a PC and we don't want to pay premium for macs. lets just burn them because we hate apple." yeah there stupid robbers :p

Yes, probably. Because there's quite a huge difference between "bloodlust" and "defense". I suggest you look up the meaning of these two words.

Thanks for that, I was just thinking that I haven't been patronised enough yet today.

Self-defence I could understand shooting someone, but to protect a shop full of computers that will be covered by insurance..?

I see nothing wrong with shooting a robber dead.

No. No, I don't suppose you do.

....

All they have standing between robbers and 50k worth of electricals which arent even locked into place with Kensington locks is a pane of glass and 1 guard who isnt even armed.. They dont even have security walls. Im sorry, but if thats the type of security they use, they deserve to be robbed. They keep the lights on in the store at night? Why? So people can see the products. Would it hurt to put a MBP next the window or something? That is rediculous.

To be honest, this is Apples fault for having such poor security.

1 unarmed guard? What the hell is he going to do! Beg them not to rob the store?

It's Apples stupid fault for:

1 - Poor physical security (1 unarmed guard)
2 - Big glass doors/windows that are not locked down at night
3 - Leaving everything out on display
4 - Not even using a kensington lock on the laptops

TBH, they deserved to get robbed again, if they cant be bothered to do a few simple things to prevent it happening, its their own fault.

The people here chiming in with their suggestions for how to beef up security at Apple stores really don't get Apple's ideology. Apple would never do anything to their stores that would detract from a customers experience for the sake of security. Apple do the bare minimum to deter thieves, an unarmed guard and a thin cable that sounds an alarm if it's yanked off.

Kensington locks? They're clunky and obtrusive and basically treat every customer as a potential robber. Apple knows that 99.9% of the people that come into their stores won't steal anything, so why have measures in the store targeted at just those 0.1% of people that will negatively affect the vast majority?

Leaving the products out and having big glass doors is part of that too. Apple like to show off their products, not hide them away.

1 unarmed guard? You'd prefer 10 armed men? That would look good for Apple wouldn't it, "Apple security guards shoot 6 robbers dead". Killing people is just the kind of PR Apple would love.

Apple stores aren't like walmart or dixons or best buy, that's why they work. Saying that Apple should be more like the others is just ridiculous. They get robbed. They have insurance. They claim. They sell more Macs. They get robbed. They have insurance...

hear hear . . .

Just saw it on Gizmodo.

Insane. Every Apple Store I've been to have the notebooks hooked up to something (a security device) or so I thought so.

Security device that rings an alarm to notify employees so there is no shop lifting. A loud ringing noise is not going to stop an organized, 31 second heist. A lot of stores don't lock computers to the display tables either. They have ethernet cables instead that, when unplugged, rings an alarm.

And this is epic. The coolest real heist I've seen/heard of. I mean nobody got hurt, and they didn't steal nearly enough to affect the company.

Quit with the "his life is worth more than those laptops" BS. Those 5 peoples lives are worth $0. This isn't the first time they have done this s***, and it won't be the last. They are worthless people.

Please stop. Seriously.

didn't they know to wait until after the 9th?

edit: didn't they have the decency to steal new ipods and leak pics! :(

We have people (kids mostly) steal stuff from our store from time to time. It's either the software or the iPhones.

Recently, a group of kids stole one iPhone, and we used MobileMe's find my iPhone to follow them back to their house where the cops arrested them! (or so I heard!)

well i have 23 mac books with out the power plugs on ebay,

ebay.com/asgsfgf

Just kidding I live in canada and i would not go to the us to take some computers, XD

that sucks for apple tho,

In the video, it looked as if the Macbooks weren't anchored down with anything. Maybe the security guard was in on it. He comes in as if nothing is happening, realizes that everything is gone and then runs into the back. When did he realize the place was getting robbed, when the thieves broke the glass or when they told him they had a gun? Wow, Apple, time for you to hire some real security guards. Not so Genius.

Don't bother with an armed security guard. If he has to use his gun and someone ends up dead, Apple probably would like to avoid that scene.

Just put up either the storm shutter type outer doors, or the inner roll down steel doors that many other retailers use.

Security Guard...well, he provided security for the burglars, at least.

For anyone advocating the robbers be shot in the commission of the crime. Dumb. Anyone (that is sane)that carries a gun for work, or personal safety, is not going to want someone else's death on their hands. I sure don't and I carry daily.

Yeah but if the shutter doors go in it might have to become a standard at all Apple stores and then it would ruin a great deal of the aesthetics of the store front!

The rollup kind that are in the ceiling and concealed. They sit above the sight lines.

As far as being standard on all stores...you really don't want thieves using your store's weaknesses every few months.

The Apple Store that I live next to and is about 300 yards away, inside a huge shopping mall, is lucky enough to have the local PD use the mall as a substation. And the police department, which is about 30 yards from my door, is also a major deterrent for this type of crime.
