Well, a news reporter's main concern is to communicate the news to potentially millions of people of all ages in the clearest possible way, and adding "computer" is probably a good idea given that some viewers may not be familiar with the Apple Store concept or even the company. This takes precendence over satisfying a miniscule number of nerds who are anal about the syntax of the store's name.

If he kept calling it as an "apple store" without referencing what they actually sell, I bet there'd be quite a grandmas "they're robbing fruit stands now? My, what is the world coming to. But why isn't the store selling any pears and mangos?"

Your point is noted, but I find it hard to believe. Especially when he mentions them stealing computers etc. You'd have to be hiding under a rock not to know Apple, and a reporter should be accurate in their reports, first and foremost including the companies name.

Ya it doesn't really matter anyway, I'm just saying lol.

Am I the only one who finds all the bloodlust in this thread highly distasteful..?

Give the security guy a taser, by all means, but shoot a guy dead for pinching a few computers..? Perspective, please...

People seem to have skipped over this. I too am a little disturbed by the attitudes of a large majority of this forum sometimes...

Not sure if this was brought up, but thank god for the magnetic battery cord, that saved them 5 seconds a laptop.

Yeah those magsafe connectors must make them really easy to snatch off the display counter! A regular power connector may snap, break or damage the charging port being grabbed like that, but I bet the magsafe connectors just dropped out with no damage, which just makes the robbers' life easier.

I just bought a brand new mbp for $100 off of new jersey craigslist...i wonder if that has anything to do with this story???

J/K!!

I saw New Jersey and immediately knew it was a crime related thread :)

Anyway, something needs to be done to make an example out of people who do this. Too often do people get away with robbing stores. Solution? Guns. If the security guard had been walking around with a semi-automatic rifle or a shotgun this would have NEVER happened. The only thing punks like these kids understand is firepower. Wave a taser in their face and they will probably beat you to death. Wave a powerful gun in their face and they will be out that door faster than they made it in.

What would have happened if the kids had been shot up? Would you likely see any copycat crimes at the Apple store? Would a criminal ever steal from this Apple store again? But instead what do we have? We have a video showing how easy it is to rob a building made from glass that uses no security locks. Wonderful.

Quit with the "his life is worth more than those laptops" BS. Those 5 peoples lives are worth $0. This isn't the first time they have done this s***, and it won't be the last. They are worthless people. I wouldn't give the change in my pocket to save them as they have caused undue hardship on peoples lives for their own personal pleasure. They are what is wrong with society today. People like this NEED to be made an example of and punching holes in them with a shotgun would have done just that.

It is not YOUR place to deem someone's life as worthless.
Whose people's lives did they cause undue hardship?
Murdering people because they stole something is the same reason we shun extremist societies in the first place. There is often a back story involved and who knows maybe these kids are the Robin Hood types. Fact is, reserve judgement until you have all the facts. Sure they're wrong, but do they deserve to be shot up? NO!

Yes, probably. Because there's quite a huge difference between "bloodlust" and "defense". I suggest you look up the meaning of these two words.
Give the security guy a taser, by all means, but shoot a guy dead for pinching a few computers..? Perspective, please...
I see nothing wrong with shooting a robber dead. Robbers do these things because they think they'll have a reasonably good chance of getting away with it (i.e. they know the guards are unarmed), and also because they know getting caught means only a light slap on the wrist and some community service (for a first time offender). If it was common practice to have armed guards who will fire at robbers, word will get out quick and these kinds of robberies will decline almost immediately. It's effective.

Secondly, guns are for stopping power. Not necessarily for killing. Plenty of non-lethal places to shoot a burglar that will stop him in his tracks, but not kill him. This is what training is for.

This is why there is so much crime in society. "Now Johnny, you know its bad to steal. Don't do it again please." DOESN'T WORK! My god. Kids are babied and thats why they treat adults like crap, have no problem stealing from people, talking crap to teachers, treating adults like crap, etc. We have moved from being strict with kids to being overly sensitive and it has lead to a total change in respect for adults and others. My mother has worked at a high school for over 10 years and she witnesses this first hand. Its terrible.

This is a heinous and deplorable act and I pray these criminals are caught.

I do agree with this post even though it's not the current law as a few people have correctly noted. You have to use equal and necessary force and really that's a "defense" to an assault/battery by another. The security guard wasn't really threatened so he could really only tell them to stop, call the police, maybe try to tackle them or something. That would have been pretty cool actually if he would have hit one of the guys in the head with an iMac or something.

In the end, this is just another reason to have severe punishments for crimes like this otherwise there will be copycats. I'm all about severe penalties which punish the criminal and deter others at the same time.

I'm sure Apple can get AT&T to flag the IMEIs of all the iPhones, and they can probably flag the S/Ns of all the computers and parts. Robbing an Apple Store is just stupid. You get the goods, you sell it, and then the buyer will end up "returning" it and you'll get ratted out. If they're pros, they'll know to hit a shop that hasn't been inventoried yet, not display units.

Last week when I was at the Woodcliff Lake, NJ Apple Store I noticed that one of their giant glass doors was missing, replaced with a temporary black wooden door. I wonder if they had a burglary as well?

More likely that they're installing some more shatter resistant glass, to prevent this type of attack from happening again. I've seen similar door replacements being done at two :apple: stores in MA. Maybe all of the stores' security is being increased in response.

Yikes....that was a quick snatch and grab...... It almost seems like the guard (or someone else) was in on it. Anybody get the feeling that the locks were tampered with prior to them coming in? They seemed to have broken way to easy.

Wow!

Those security locks can be defeated in seconds, but it didn't even look like they had to -- in the video, they just pick the computers up and run off with them. They don't even seem to be locked down at all....

What's with all these Apple store robberies recently?

Unfortunately for the consumers cost of products, someday in the not-too-distant future, the U.S. stores will have to do what a lot of other Countries are doing in stores, and Banks...... Having hired Security Guards/Policemen with Machine Guns. If a few of these people get shot, maybe it will stop this!

Those guy are the best.
but they are defenetly not smart because they have all those macs and 0 chargers and what not so pretty dumb on there part.:)

Sorry, I (incorrrectly) assumed this was a different robbery. Thus my nonsensical comment about what's with all the Apple Store robberies...

'Tis merged now.

Give to time. Once Microsoft opens their retail stores, I'm sure they'll copy the robberies too. :p
