I wanted touchid on a mac for years and then I got an MBA and realized that (doh!) it is surprisingly pointless.

First, every website already saved my password if I wanted and all I already had to do was click yes or hit return or whatever.

Two, logging into your Mac with a short password is not a chore when you are already sitting in front a keyboard.

And last, unlike a phone, your Mac isn't locking you out every ~30 seconds thus further making typing in your mac password not a chore.

btw, I'm actually surprised they didn't just put Faceid on the iMac. I mean it seems tailor made for it compared to touchid. I guess that comes after everyone who wants the new imac buys one.

Yeah easy to see why it's there (housing the logic board and speakers), but personally I'd much rather have a thicker body with no chin. You see the front/chin 100% of the time when using the computer, the thickness almost never.

That or integrated into the base like the G4 would have been even better.

I remember when people were insistent this was impossible, because the T1 needed a physical connection for ??reasons??

A case of "It's impossible... until it's not". So here we are. Too bad it is still 'impossible' to incorporate the Touch ID sensor into the Magic Trackpad or Mouse, I put my Magic Keyboards on the shelf years ago for proper mechs and don't see myself going back.

I'm annoyed with the lack of backlighting controls on my M1 Air every single day...

Having to go to the control center to switch it on/off is a horrible experience.

It's by far my biggest gripe with that computer.

Looks like gonna be the same story here

It looks like they won't be selling it seperatly, which is unfortunate because it was what I was most interested in at the event. I'm a laptop user, so as much as the iMac is beautiful (unpopular opinion, apparently…), I'm not going to be switching to one.

Please tell me the charging port is anywhere but the underside of the Mouse

Having a charge port anywhere else makes no sense. You think having a front charge port makes more sense? Nope. I can think of many reasons why that's a bad idea.

Wireless charging would be a better solution.

What is wrong with a front charge port? The Logitech MX has one that allows you to keep using the mouse while charging.

No redesign of the mouse and its charging port location it seems. Can't they just do a collaboration with Logi and make an colour-matching MX master 3 mouse instead?

charging port location isn't the problem. underside is better than a front charging port.

wireless charging would have improved the charging experience.

Really? I find it a hell of a lot more convenient than typing my login password.
But it's not consistent. No ryme or reason why sometimes you can use touch ID and sometimes you have to type in password. Actually slows you down because of different pop ups asking for different input.

And if it's really that secure and reliable, then why can't touch ID be used after reboot or shutdown?

I'd imagine the Mac the keyboard is connected to would need to have the chip to support the Touch ID function, maybe they haven't sold enough M1 yet, and by end of this transition period, the keyboard will come.

Hopefully this brings Touch ID to the M1 Mini also;

I'd love to think it would bring it to my old intel machine but doubt it does as no secure enclave there.

I would consider this if it works with my M1 Mac mini, especially as there seems like there'll be an extended keyboard version, and I do like that layout with additional function keys. Grant you, most of what I'd use Touch ID for my Apple Watch covers with my Mac, so getting it would depend a lot on cost too.

All T2 and M1 Macs have Secure Enclaves, so theoretically all those Macs could support this keyboard.

Doesn't matter where they put the charge port on the Magic mouse.

it's still a horrible ergonomic mouse and nobody should be buying it. One of the worst mouse devices I have EVER owned in my 30+ years of owning computer equipment.

Get the trackpad instead. Apple's use of trackpads in iOS is unrivaled and works so much better.

1. lightning cables fray easily. using magic mouse with lightning cable plugged in on the front will break it.

2. if magic mouse has to spend time being a wired mouse, that's not really better than the magic mouse 1 where you just spend 1-2 minutes swapping out batteries to keep the 100% wireless experience.

3. the charging lightning cable material causes too much friction (and you have to make sure to straighten it out or else you get looped slack), making the wired experience much worse.

4. most existing lightning cables are too short to allow magic mouse to move comfortably
