im happy they scrapped the rumored "returned Switch Campaign" for this. The music is better and this is actually entertaining instead of seeing regular joe schmoes just blabbing with random camera switches...:)

Very good, except "Better", which doesn't make any sense.

Now they need to compliment it with a crop of ads showing off the beautiful hardware and software. No narration. Just pretty. Like the iPod ads. These can help debunk Mac myths and give reasons to boy, but it can't make Macs "cool" like the iPod ads did for iPods.

Well if Apple is trying to make fun of potential customers... then mission accomplished. Bravo.

What exactly is the point of slandering customers and competitors? Its a lot like Pepsi and political ads, which dont exactly have the best reputation. Anyone that knows about computers knows that Apple is just insulting peoples intelligence with these commercials, thats a pretty large chunk to offend. I thought they learned their lesson from the massive amount of Switch parody movies. Oh well, here comes another batch of parody movies that are going to strike back against this idiotic commercial.

I could see a PC add countering this saying "Have fun playing iLife, iMovie, and iPhoto. Im going to go play Half Life 2, Battlefield 2, Elder Scrolls Oblivion, FEAR, Far Cry, Prince of Persia, etc etc etc"

The ad just fails in so many ways that they should be ashamed of themselves. Theyre trying to show that macs are for young users while pcs are for old people? If thats the case then dont try to pretend programs like iPhoto interest the younger generation. I mean c'mon, its iPhoto. The first thing I did when I started up a mac was remove the iTard programs and install real ones.

Give me a break Apple. Next time make a commercial that shows how much someone enjoys a mac, not a commercial that just makes mac zealots feel special about themselves. If Apple ever makes a commercial that shows people that professionals use Macs to work (without making fun of the millions of professionals who use PC's to work!), then I'd be happy.

But Apple taking the arrogance level down a notch and making a regular commercial doesnt seem like its ever going to happen. Pretty soon Steve Jobs is going to start calling things the "StevePod"

The enthusiast crowd is going to have a field day with this.

Or am I wrong?
Its not just Apple, its everyone. Advertisers don't give a crap about you unless you're under 35 any more. The reason: generally over 35s have no disposable income and are already set in their ways with regards to buying patterns. Under 35s are easily led by "what's cool" and have money to burn.

Lighten up already. The ads point out things like how apps like iLife are easy to use. They're not slamming the users at all, just using a little humor.

How thin skinned do you have to be to take pointing out that macs don't have viruses as an insult?

Mac users can play all of those using boot camp. I think that many users would choose the iApps over first person shooters.

When I set up the iMac at their house, I said "Remember how many problems we had with the camera on your old computer? Well this is how it's suppused to work!" And iPhoto open automatically when the camera was connected and did it's thing. And they sat there amazed and asked how I did that if I hadn't even set anything up for it...
As I sit here reading your response I have a very smug look on my face.;) A while ago I went to an 'Apple Expo' at a Harvey Norman appliance store in Auckland. Harvey Norman are Austrailan owned and are the only stores to have proper Apple 'store within a store' setups in New Zealand as opposed to just having a demo stand. They had a Canon rep in the store who was setting up a DV camera to record stuff so he could demo iMovie to the customers. He told me that he was trully amazed that he could just plug in his DV camera in to the G5 PowerMac straight out of the box (after he charged it up ;) ) and it just worked! No fussing around with drivers or fancy downloads or anything. My response was
"Thats Apple, easy eh." with a rather smug look on my face.

this is an ad campaign isnt it.
campaign kinda suggests that it will continue with more commercials.
so while these ads dont hit a hot button with some of you doesnt mean that future commercials wont.
ad campaigns are about building something (brand awareness <white background, simplicity>, product desire <frustration with mass market>, curiosity <iLife, connectivity>, etc) and I think these ads are a great start especially the mentions of iLife vs Calc/Clock.

I think you're just seeing what you expect, if you feel these ads say Mac users are better than Windows users. What they actually say is that Macs are better than Windows. That's not insulting the users, its offering them something better.

As for the "PC enthusiast crowd" that you think will sneer at these ads--you're right. Of course they will--and no ad could ever sway them because their minds are closed. That's why these ads are targeted at people who DO have it in them to consider alternatives. A much larger group, I think--even though the Mac-haters are so vocal online they may seem more important than they are.

This post is 100% bullsh1t.
so are these ads.

The people represent the users who use each product. Isnt that obvious? If they werent trying to slander people then they wouldnt have used people. Its a stab at PC users like usual. Theres nothing different about this ad making it seem like PC users are old people that dont know anything than there is about Pepsi commercials making fun of Coke drinkers for not being cool. I dont think I mentioned the virus part, but if I had I would probably say that I havent had a virus on my PC in probably 6 years since I dont download stupid stuff.

Why did you get a mac?
I got a $499 mac mini since it was cheap ($499 was the magic price for me, not the new $599). I planned on using it for regular everyday stuff like internet use, I like Safari more than IE6/FireFox, and OSX is undeniably more pleasent to look at than XP. But the onboard sound on the mac mini has had an adverse affect on the usage since my mp3's sound so much better on my PC (Soundblaster X-Fi). If Im watching tv I'll probably use the mini, but I just cant stand listenning to music on it.

Sorry for not being a mac zealot and swooning over everything Apple does. I think there are benifets to both Macs and PC's and Im sick of advertising that slanders other products that obviously has plus and minuses over the other. You slander the product, you also slander the fan. Dont tell me that if a PC commercial came out and did the same that Apple fans wouldnt take offense and start yelling "LIES!"

My 2 Cents

The Good:
The ads are funny.
I think they were done well for the fact that many can now go to their friends who are running windows and say SEE I TOLD U.
They were sleek and had an Apple feel to them.

The Bad:
While watching I was constantly thinking Windows. He mentioned iMovie and I thought MovieMaker. (I'm not saying Moviemaker is better or anything just what kept coming to mind).
Infact by the time I got through reading all 19 pages (I know I'm lame) of this thread I found myself thinking "Ok what were the adds about. Something about Windows... It was about Windows and... Windows failed at.... Windows...

I know you are all saying well that dumb newbie, if he knew anything about Apple he would know to heart why OS X dominates Windows, but I dont think these adds are meant to give the Apple lifetimers a warm feeling when they go to bed at night; they're here to sell computers and I'll I could remember was Apple said Windows did...

Conclusion: I love Apple. I think the commercials are funny, but lack an effective ness I would hope for.
I hope one day they come out with some commercial showing off the hardware and showing some software. I hope they do this because people like my mom who wants to switch but aren't sure about it could see some great examples of why.

For example at the 2006 Keynote when they showed the new iMovie features. I showed my mom what iLife was because I knew what she would like even though she'd never heard of such a suite. My mom LOVED iMovie. She couldn't believe a company made a program like iMovie.

If you could make a commercial that show what iLife is for the not so knowing computer users, I think that be the most benificial.

Using people is a great analogy, it's humorous and illustrates the features in a way that's easy to understand. Saying the people represent the users is your interpretation, and I don't agree with it.

I think the best part of these ads is that they don't just go for a cool factor, but instead explain real advantages of the mac.

And watch your use of the word SLANDER. Slander implies making false statements, which isn't the case in these ads. Representing someone in a way you interpret as looking "uncool" isn't "slander". If you think there are lies in these ads, you should be addressing that, not whining about PC users not looking cool enough.

The whole point of advertising is to (hopefully) point out the advantages of your product and the disadvantages of your competitiors. That's exactly what they're doing in these ads.

Overall, I think the ads will have very mixed reactions. They're very sketchy, and somewhat weird... that's all I have to say.

Well if 2 different people obviously interperet the ad in a different way then the ad has failed to get its point across.

An example of slander would be spinning facts to make it seem like Windows just has Calculator and Clock when comparing it to iMovie.

Yep. I think they're better than the "switcher" ads from a couple years ago, but they're still kind of strange. I see where they were going - put a human face on computers, talk about computer pros and cons with people, but as much as the switcher ads were guilty of not having anything related to the benefits of Macs and OS X, these don't actually show any of the hardware or software at all.

Just, just bring back Ridley Scott...

If one person misinterprets the ads, that means nothing. There will always be someone who can't figure it out regardless of how blatantly things are spelled out. The ad only fails if missing the point is a common reaction. I don't think that will be the case, but only time will tell.

And the ad doesn't say that windows doesn't come with any apps. Does windows come with a movie editor? DVD burning software? Does XP even come with software for DVD playback, I heard it didn't? Does it come with an audio recording app? Web authoring app?

What does windows come with that's that much more exciting than a calculator?

Well, ANY computer COULD be bundled with whatever extras the seller wants to add. Windows could come with an office suite, five games, and free mousepad. So could a Mac. (Aspyr is about to release the fifth Mac game.)

But if you mean, what comes with EVERY Windows PC vs. what comes with EVERY Mac (as the ad is getting at), then the answer is clear:

Minesweeper!

Say what you will, Minesweeper rules!!! On a Mac, you must download Minesweeper yourself. That's delayed krazy funtime, and nobody wants that.

Yes (Moviemaker), sort of (CD-burning), no (although most OEMs package DVD player software with the computer), yes (Sound Recorder), no.

However, Moviemaker, the CD-burning interface, and Sound Recorder kind of suck -- and Moviemaker and Sound Recorder are hidden way up in the "Multimedia" subfolder of the "Accessories" folder in the Start menu. So probably 90% of Windows users don't even know they exist.

Personally, I liked the ads. Yes, they fudge the details a bit (like the stuff about calculator and clock) in order to reinforce the message of how Macs are cooler, smoother-running, and come with better built-in programs. But it's an ad, not a product info sheet -- it's supposed to give you a feeling about the product that makes you want to find out more about it!
