The design is sweet. The ports in the back don't bother me in the slightest. If reaching an extra six inches to the rear of the box is that difficult for you then I suggest taking up an exercise program of some kind. Heck you might even burn a calorie just reaching!

All kidding aside, the price is silly. $599 would be fine. But it is what it is and if sales are too slow maybe they'll reexamine the price point in the coming months.

As far as buying one, I really like the Mini and have one at home. When the time comes to replace it I'll do what I always do with Mac purchases and buy it from the Apple refurbished page. I always save 20% and have had no issues with any of the purchases which have been many.

I agree. I want to buy one, but it can't stream my iTunes library to my TV, Front Row is pathetically outdated, and it is way too expensive for what I need. At least Apple isn't abandoning the TV space, and hopefully a new Apple TV is finally coming. It needs new hardware so badly.

I agree, Front Row is a poor man's Apple TV in terms of software. All those people splashing out on a Mac Mini to do the Apple TV's job better prey that Apple updates Front Row. I've tried the alternatives and I don't like them!

Also the Mac Mini won't replace the Apple TV market, it's like saying the the iPod touch will kill the iPod shuffle. Like the shuffle Apple TV does one thing well, the Mac Mini is designed for so much more than just a buddy for your TV. Fondling around for the keyboard an mouse isn't appealing to me ether, and anyone expecting the sever version to be the ultimate Apple TV media centre will be disappointed to learn that the server model doesn't have a remote!

All of this makes me think that Apple are working on a new Apple TV, maybe a very cheep one just for streaming, and another to work as a media centre.

I don't care about its formfactor. Make it as big as a stardard mac pro tower. Its not going to be moved. Oh, and I can find you a better speced Dell for the same price or similar.
Doesn't matter if you care or not. It's included in the price.

Nice Try, Uncle Jobs!

Captain Cupertino has a way of rolling out a slick new upgrade to every Apple device I purchase -RIGHT AFTER I PURCHASE IT.

This time, I'm happy to say, he didn't snare me. If PayPal wasn't tying up my funds this week in temporary holds, I would have ordered the mini yesterday and been burned again by this announcement.

Un-freaking believable.

Kick butt design, by the way. Glad I won't be wasting $30 on another mini display-to-DVI adapter. And is that an SD card slot I see??

Seriously? More BS from you? Do you want to back up that statement that an American owned company pays absolutely nothing to import their goods to the UK. I bet you think the regulatory fees and power adapter are free, too.

Oh please

Its an absolutely disgusting price hike. Clearly they want people to enter into the world of apple through the ipad, not the mini.

Anyway, although the ease of upgradeability is a nice feature, I just dont like the slow death of anything white by apple. Glad I bought one a couple of months ago (and it only cost me £300 new!)

I used to have one - £330 new I think; I loved it.

I would not pay double for essentially the same; it's crazy. It will not sell well in the UK. Apple's problem; not ours.

Wicked! How the hell did they squeeze the power supply in there?

Now why couldn't they have allocated 10 minutes of the Keynote to this one, instead of spending 10 minutes trying to show WSJ on the Retina display?

It would've sent a much needed message about their continued commitment to the Mac.

OK, the Mini may not be a developer favorite, but WTH, the audience still would've loved this one.

Uhm.. I understand the VAT story, but why isn't Apple capable of converting the price right?

The base model here costs 799 euros; that's 975$!!!

Sorry, you're still off on your values, it's $115 not $90. The person you were quoting from did the same mistake on removing the VAT you did in your original post (you can't calculate VAT by taking 17.5% off the VAT inclusive price, doesn't work that way). That's a BIG difference and can't be justified with this commodity prices rubbish, especially considering it's a bigger gap that Apple normally apply to their devices (last one I worked out was iPad and that came in around... 8% I think for the base 16Gb model).

my bad, again. my justifications was originally intended for if the price difference was something like $72, but I guess now it has gone past $100 making it very unreasonable. it does seem like they're making a bit more but you know the EU has regulations that ends up jacking the prices up by about 7% as someone mentioned earlier. With every other factors included I don't think Apple is purely making $115 from each mac mini sold in Britain nevertheless.

the new mac mini costs AU$999 (US$853). Take 10% GST off (by dividing by 11) that equates to US$775. the new mac mini in the US sells for $699, or $76 less.

a base imac costs AU$1599 here (US$1366). Take 10% GST off (by dividing by 11) that equates to US$1242. A base imac in the US sells for $1199, or $43 less.

well I don't know about all US states but I've heard that some don't have tax, some have 5%, some 10% and some more than 10%. So not all US people pay the same price anyway.

Yes I agree apple sells stuff more expensive overseas and even more in the UK, and I can see where you're going with why apple's UK pricing went out of proportion with the mac mini (or in fact with their other products too). I know it doesn't feel good paying that extra bit but you can't really do anything about it, and often things are way more expensive in Europe not just because of tax. Taking a step back regardless of where the mac mini is purchased from it's still too expensive anyway.

They got rid of the annoying power brick, but I am a bit worried about heat.

aluminium dissipates heat better than plastic so it should be fine... that's only a guess though.

Well...I'm a fan, but I'm still holding out for a new AppleTV. If it doesn't happen in the next couple months, I'll be getting the Mac Mini.

In short: austerity measures will increase costs in Europe (both fixed and variable) and reduce volumes. Unit cost must rise (higher costs spread over lower volume) to compensate so the differential for doing business here relative to the US will be bigger. It might have been 7% before but it will be more now. Plus there is exchange rate risk.

Because the European economic situation has worsened considerably in last few weeks you can only make sensible comparison with a new price list.

These are all just a bunch of made-up, half-true and negligible factors and no excuse whatsover! AGAIN: Most other companies do not have these huge price differences between EU and US! It's an Apple thing (some others do it too, of course). You are making a fool of yourself by deperately trying to "excuse away" a very simple business motive: making more profits.

The economic sitation in Europe as a whole hasn't worsened in the last weeks. Projected growth rates are unchanged and it's totally unclear how austerity programs in Europe will affect that since most countries are already out of the recession. Not all of Europe is Greece or Spain, you know? In fact, the bigger European economies see the recent return of the Euro to a more reasonable value in a positive light, since they still make and export a lot of stuff (unlike the US).
Strangely enough, no other US company is raising prices like crazy. Prices for some imported goods slightly went up along with the dollar and oil price, that's all. Apparently all these companies are not listening to you hard enough.

My first thought when I saw this was "bye bye apple TV". Just think, move those services to the cloud and have this unit with a built in blu-ray player and WOW!!!!.....oh, but wait?!?!?!?

Apple really dropped the ball here. Sure Apple is hoping movies will mostly be DL'd in the future, but the reality is that with the HD audio options available on Blu-ray, these audio options aren't available on DL'd HD movies right now.

Skimping on blu-ray really killed the new mini's chances of becoming a real contender in the Home theater arena.

Care to point out where those half the price Minis with the current specs are located on Apple's site ?

crikey, talk about missing the point.

The mini was introduced as a low end mac to get people into osx. It was always at the same relative level of performance compared to the rest of the range.

It was introduced at £339, and is now £649.

Apple has taken the mini to a new market today, and my guess is that it has raised the price this much so as to push the iPad as the entry level mac.

Please, in future, do some research before rolling your eyes

Total Disappointment

Jobs is playing you fanboys.
Again.

Nice package.
Better access for memory.
A few added features, all of which cost almost nothing more to add/manufacture.
And jack the price up almost 20%.
A total 180 the wrong way.

A massive disappointment.
I was hoping they would add a few features and keep the price the same or drop it $50 or $100 and make it the next small step above the iPad.
Wrong.

Very disappointing.
FAIL!

Should be £599 in the UK for accurate pricing. £649/117*100, into dollars is over $800.

Should have a 2.26, 250 for $599 (£499).

Seriously? More BS from you? Do you want to back up that statement that an American owned company pays absolutely nothing to import their goods to the UK. I bet you think the regulatory fees and power adapter are free, too.

Sorry if you don't like them but these are the facts.
Maybe you should educate yourself more before you call BS.

Kinda sad no Core i3/i5/i7 & no Blu-Ray, too. If this is like the 13" MBP, Apple will probably say it's because of not enough room to fir that & a dedicated video card, plus heat issues.

Blu-Ray, I like it, but not gonna happen. Apple seems to want people to only use the iTunes Store for movies. Why care for those people who might use the drive for data backup? Honestly, I'm waiting for Apple to do something like they did with the original iMac: get rid of the drive entirely. No optical drive whatsoever. Sell Mac OS X on flash drives or something. I don't like that idea, but I can definitely see Apple doing that.

My last gripe: why is the SD card slot on the back? Why not the front? Just makes more sense if it's on the front.

[/rant]

I really like the design, it looks gorgeous. As many others have said though, the price and continued lack of Blu-ray mean it's a disappointment for me.

I suppose one advantage of the high UK price (for me) is the probable higher resale value of my older 09 mini. I'll probably update, maybe leave it a month or so first to avoid the number of older mini's flooding Ebay.
