1K for a monitor stand was a bad decision, but not surprising at all based on Apple’s track record for overcharging. With that said, I’m pretty sure there will be plenty of third party options for those interested in buying the monitor..

Yes there are tons of cheaper, any I think even better. I paid under $200 for an ergotron mount that does the same thing except frees up desk space.

Most people may not even need it, so all this really adds up to is bad press for Apple. I wish they did not do that.

Was the $3,000 markup also kept top secret? Base model is really only worth about that much.

Linus Tech Tips already did the breakdown of the parts (Price starts at 11:10)

So yeah... it's a $3,000 markup.

So yeah... a parts list does not include custom-designed parts, overall design, engineering. labor, software, overhead, marketing, and every other cost normal people understand in product development, manufacturing, and sales. Usually you're better than this.

Yeah, you can build a Mercedes for half the price if you just buy the parts...

I’m going to get the wheels. And a nice, sturdy leash.

I’m going to take it for walks and work on it using my iPad Pro attached by a really long dongle.

The wheel looks a bad idea - if the desk isn't level it will slip down very quickly - omg the repair invoice will be overpriced like madness.

I bet someone from Youtube will try to replace the skateboard for the Mac Pro along with 4 Wheels. :D

Yup. I always refer to this MacRumors thread to show you what the Mac Faithful always do,.

You should find one for the Apple Watch. It was clear to me then, and it’s become crystal clear to nearly everyone that those claiming that the Watch was “a failure” and a waste of Apple’s time were going to end up eating Claim Chowder™️ along with the iPod critics.

This is so awesome. Now, if I want a Mac where I can upgrade my storage...I can't buy a new one AT ANY PRICE.

Parts alone cost $3,000? Apple’s legal exposure alone suddenly makes this look like a good deal. Let alone other operational costs. I’m assuming tooling is included with parts? Can’t watch the video right at the moment.
I'm curious as to where the new Mac Pro line is being produced/manufactured. The trash can was put together mostly in Austin, going back to 2013. I'm guessing the new one is assembled elsewhere, but am having trouble finding out via Google. In any case, the design and manufacturing of this beast was amazingly kept top secret. The main problem with assembly of Apple devices in the USA is in acquisition of the massive amounts of parts needed, and the costs and possible delays that could entail. If it is indeed still being produced in Austin, of which I'm a long time resident, it's totally hush hush. Even the new Apple campus facility here gets very little notice or attention in the press or news outlets.

Wait, you want to add your own MEMORY? Sure, we got that: just hand over SIX THOUSAND DOLLARS.

But have they really? Pro photographers, for example, spend $2,000+ for quality lenses... and have gear kits that easily go $20k and up. I imagine it's similar for a lot of other pros. Can't see this being very out of line. People saying entry level Mac Pro prices used to be $3,000 forget to account for inflation. Everything costs so much more today than it did 5 years ago.
Even when you factor in inflation it’s still way higher

I’ve spent about 15k over the last few years on 2 PCs and a Cintiq Pro but, especially with my machine that cost 5K, it absolutely destroyed the baseline model Mac Pro

I don’t know what’s more adorable. That guy’s analysis. Or that someone actually buys his analysis without putting any critical thought into it.

So funny either way!
Well, in your reference to Linus (of Linus Tech Tips), I've found him and his staff to be informative as a rule. Whatever he said in today's "tip" was speculation based upon lack of real hands on experience. He indicates that he is going to get the base model plus the fancy monitor for around $12000 total. Whenever he does that, he will do a real tear down/analysis. Of course, by that time, I would hope iFixit will have acquired one to produce a thorough evaluation.

I just want to know what ports?
Are they on the bottom or on the back with the black exhaust strip?

There's internals and port layour diagrams on the Mac Pro mini site at apple:
https://www.apple.com/mac-pro/specs/

If you scroll down to "Input / Output" stock layout is:

PCI half-length card in top rear PCI slot:
1x 3.5mm headphone w/ headset support
2x USB 3.0
2x Thunderbolt 3

Bottom of rear of case:
2x 10Gb Ethernet

Roof of Case:
2x Thunderbolt 3

And then in addition to that is whatever additional Thunderbolt / HDMI / DP connectors you may get depending on your particular GPU choice.

Worth remembering that is going to be relatively low volume. They’re not going to be churning them out like iPhones.

Those who complain about the price of the stand are not in the market for a reference monitor in the first place. Even if the stand was $50, it would've affect them. The reason it's expensive is because it's a very low volume, highly complicated custom item. They have a manufacture a precision device that they're not going to sell too many of.

The real reason anyone should be upset is why Apple doesn't make an upgradeable tower for the enthusiasts, indie filmmakers, wedding photographers, serious hobbyists. Kind of like the old Mac Pro and the Cinema Display used to be.

Great machine, Apple. Top notch! It’s super future proof which is great—it probably will not be updated for at least half a decade.

But, for the love of not cannibalizing your own product line, drop the 8-core machine that has a gimped turbo boost frequency, runs slower ram, and isn’t six channel from the factory. Also, drop the joke of a graphics card that will struggle to drive all pixels of their gorgeous display. And, 256gb of SSD in 2019!?

Hell, charge $6999 for the aforementioned changes. Pros are akin to BS marketing, and, that’s just what we have here. The BTO options will undoubtably make this a pro machine, but, the stock offering is a laugh.

Thanks, Tim!

This is a new processor so it likely compares well with the existing Xeon Golds. You're still looking at a similarly priced computer if you get a similar workstation from Dell or HP.

Hard to get apples to Apples (pun intended) on the CPU but yeah it does appear that way. Lets say at least $5000 for an equivalent Dell Workstation.

I would like one but it looks like it was designed after someone return from IKEA.
Maybe we can buy the wheels from there?

Oh dear really? You’ve posted a video by the village idiot Linus.. is his silly friend going to take the new monitor apart and break it, then the world can watch Linus make a series of videos complaining why Apple won’t repair what they broke by being total idiots.....
