I wonder how this will effect Mac Pro usage as servers - seems like it would be even more of a challenge to rackmount this, despite it being 1/8 of the size.

They better be under $1750. $1500 would be even better. I certainly can't imagine this being $2500 like the current low end Mac Pro.

Dual FirePro? Yeah, it will be more than that. Pretty sure anyway. 1500 is for 1 hex Xeon with no Mac. No Radeon or GeForce pisses me off but who knows crossfired firepro should get the job done:) I will wait for more info before spewing hate. What is worse, no Mac Pro (dead) or something slightly uncomfortable? I am working on my luddite ways these days. Who know if PC follows like they do everything else. Might be the future regardless.

Doesn't sound like we have a lot of Thunderbolt users. The external options are already there, TB1 supports external video cards, sound cards, encode cards, SSD / HDD and networking. Those expansion chassis already exist, here is one pf them:

http://www.sonnettech.com/product/echoexpresschassis.html).

And you bought how many TB external devices, with your own money ?
I'm not aware of a single one, that even remotely makes sense financially .

so 6 ports all over X4 or does each port have it's own X4 pcie?

No. Each pair of the 6 for 3 controllers each on a x4 PCI-e lane bundle. (each TB controller feeding two physical ports )

If it is single Xeon E5 then they are likely connecting them this way.

C602 IOHub --- x4 to TB Controller ( IO Hub has 4 left )
Xeon E5 --------> two x4 to TB Controller ( and two x16 to the two FirePros )

If 3 FW and 1 USB 3.0 controller too there is are some PCI-e switches in there also.

So they killed off the Optical Drives & Hard Drives in one mighty blow !

Ha...

So they killed off the Optical Drives & Hard Drives & Graphic Card in one mighty blow !

I can just see the Apple engineers throwing these items over their shoulders while trying to miniaturize the Mac Pro... "They don't need this, They don't need this, They don't need this, They don't need this....."

Well, think of the good side. We have better Twitter integration in OS X ! ;)

Its plastic. Not more that 800 for the top of the line.

It will be more.
Server version of Mac Mini is almost $1k.

It will be $1500. My guess.
No optical, not internal expansion.
Requires an expansion chassis for anything.

Epic Fail!

I think I'll be keeping my 2008 Mac Pro.

I want one of the new Mac Pros. And a blue spray can.

Because if painted blue — it’s the return of the SGI O2. :D

The new MacPro makes total sense for Apple. I'm not angry and I sure don't think they made a mistake.

There are a lot of developers and creative pros that will be buying one of these.

This is IDENTICAL to the FCP remake. Sure they screwed the high end and historic customers...but they successfully targeted a broader audience.

But I can't imagine buying one of these.

This is for actual workstation folks. Not some sort of gaming expansion in between thing. It will work for enterprise no problem. Gamers, probably not.

By the way, for those of you whose offices will be ordering one of these, I suggest you ready your "THIS IS NOT A COFFEE MACHINE. DO NOT POUR MIX OR WATER!" yellow stick-it-notes to ward off any monkeys and interns fetching a fresh brew for their boss.

It would be even worse if someone was dyslexic and instead of reading "12 core cpus" read it as 12 core cups :p

(Sorry about that to those with dyslexia)

Didn't see it. Didn't see any on the back of the machine. Of course I could be wrong, but I could swear I didn't see or hear anything. Only saw TB and USB 3.0

She usually is very fast at transcribing exactly what the Apple folks are saying.

Edit P.S. Looking over the other transcripts that like is a typo. And it is suppose to be TB. ( and 3 TB controllers ).

I don't think they screwed the high end. This will be the high end. Dual 12-core xeons and crossfired Fire Pro? C'mon. It will be spendy regardless.

The truth is that apple does not need the customers. Apple is about appstore, iphone and ipad. I guess the keep the mac until xcode runs on ipads.

Looks like Apple lied last year when they said there would be a new Mac Pro. All they did was keep the name. This is little more than a Mac Mini on steroids.

A pro computer needs to be expandable internally.

You cannot install expansion cards, hard drives nor easily install ram. By not being able to install expansion cards that means.
- No PCI-e RAID cards
- No upgradeable video cards
- Any other type of upgrades.

By being limited to Thunderbolt you have to spend a lot more money for Thunderbolt compatible devices which will also greatly limit your options. Thunderbolt 2.0 is also limited in bandwidth. So if you bought an external PCI-e enclosure it could never achieve PCI-e 3.0 x16 speeds.

The new "Mac Pro" is about as big of an FU to the Pro market and Final Cut X. What I truly don't understand is why they needed to spend so much time to get to this nor why they didn't update the thing in the last three years?

Sure it is a small line compared to other Macs. They only needed a minimal staff to keep it up to date. All they needed to do was use reference boards from Intel. Heck Intel would have likely been more than happy to provide any necessary OS X drivers just to push so many more Xeon boards and CPU's out the door.

Now what they've done is taken the already small Mac Pro market and cut it down further. Those that bought the Mac Pro for expandability for want or need will be forced to look at hackintoshes or leave OS X.

His Mac is an actual workstation, not the Mac mini's ugly illegitimate brother.

You have nothing but promises of a fantastic coffee can.

I'm kinda liking it. Granted, I've only had my 06 MacPro for a month or so now. :)

I'll consider an older one if the prices on them drop dramatically.

They said the same thing about the iPod. You guys will be crying when this puppy is released. For those of us with 4K displays (I've got 2) and a ton of Thunderbolt RAIDS, drives, and accessories such as myself, this is the perfect machine. 12 cores, 6 Thunderbolt 2.0 ports, 4 USB 3 ports and 2 GPUs, not to mention PCI-E storage, which beats the pants off your SATA drives, etc. This is what pros like me have been waiting for. Enjoy your 4 year old kits.

Not dual 12-core Xeons. 12-cores total, which likely means it is a 1 CPU unit with the option for a single E5-2600V2 12-core.

They also didn't say anything about Crossfire.

In defence of the New Pro..

Every product that Apple has produced in the past was really cool.

I could not name One apple product that was crap. I love them all.

I promise you, This thing will be Super Cool !!!
