Frankly, Apple Silicon on desktop makes no sense because performance per watt is of no concern.
It matters to me and many folks living in the region I’m at, as it’s hot where I stay. My iMac’s GPU fried because it got too hot, and partly due to AMD design fault.

If you're running the PC hardware and Air Conditioning, then yes it is a little wasteful, but if you're running the heat in your home it is not really wasteful at all. If you're running any type of heat, then the PC extra cost is about the same in terms of cost per BTU. So you run your PC and use less from your heater.
Are you sure a PC can heat up a room when it’s cold? I guess you can hug the PC case when it’s really cold and not turn on the heater.

You can build a PC and get much more performance for the same price as the M2 Ultra Mac Studio. Frankly, Apple Silicon on desktop makes no sense because performance per watt is of no concern. Who are Mac Studio's and the upcoming Mac Pro for? Apple can't compete with nVidia, AMD and Intel on desktop systems. Buying Apple desktop hardware is throwing away money.
Apple most definitely can compete with Intel. Before Intel 13th gen Apple Silicon was the fastest desktop CPU. Yes, I know, server Xeon Threadripper whatever blah blah blah... no one cares. As far as computers people actually buy go, Apple had a brief moment where they were ahead of Intel. And considering they can make computers with barely any cooling, they are still in a lot of ways.

It's only a matter of time before x86 can't be pushed any further. It's already gotten silly with how prevalent water cooling is now. Even if Apple doesn't have the fastest hardware anymore, they are way ahead of everyone else where ARM is concerned. Eventually Intel and AMD will have to give up x86 as well, it's just a bad, outdated architecture.

Yes I agree with you right now you can build a really good Raptor Lake machine and even run MacOS on it for way less money than a Mac Studio Ultra... but we're almost at the end of the road for that. I won't be surprised if the new MacOS that is announced in the next few days will be the last version that runs on Intel. I think it's sad, but I was also sad about 68k dying and PPC dying.

At this point M2 devices are a hard sell with M3 on the horizon.
I think a lot of ASi hold outs were because of the low RAM ceiling in the Studio.. 64->96 GB for the MAx and 128->192 GB for the Ultra is a good jump that will capture a lot more pro/enthusiasts needs. And the 15% speed bump, and GPU bumps are nice too.

M3 Ultra is not “on the horizon”, if we see M2 Ultra ship in June 2023 then we should expect to see M3 Ultra in September 2024.

Chip generations:
  • M1 – M2: ~20 months
  • M1 Max – M2 Max: ~15 months
  • M1 Ultra – M2 Ultra: ~15 months? we’ll find out Monday

Regular M3 may be. M1 to M2 was 20 months, but I think that involved a delay. It’s been 11 months since; I expect M3 to be ready in the latter half of the year.

But this is about the Max/Ultra. The M2 Max is only five months old. There were 15 months between the M1 Max and the M2 Max. An M3 Max will absolutely not ship this year. The M2 Ultra doesn’t yet exist. The M1 Ultra shipped five months after the M1 Max, so it may in fact be just the right time for an M2 Ultra Mac Studio.

kWh in the US is $0.180 at $15/hr min wage.

Depends where you are. My tiered rate gets close to $.50, although incomes are higher. Comparing my Ultra power usage over time vs my previous iMac Pro I'm saving up to $20 a month in electricity.

I will strongly disagree with the dozens of folks who liked on this comment. The Studio is
A) a Mac, and a lot of design folks like Mac.
B) The Studio Max thru Ultra boxes (the M-series Max in particular) hit a solid price/performance point for a lot of Mac design professionals.
C) Performance per watt should be of concern to all of us.
D) IMO hot boxes will become less relevant as AI solutions explode.
E) Probably today it is correct that Apple can't compete with nVidia, AMD and Intel on the highest end desktop systems. But most desktop sales are not at the highest end, leaving huge space for the IMO elegant Studio design to sell into.

Any difference between the PC and Mac in energy usage is less than the cost of a daily Starbucks before work. You know you should brew your own Folgers and quit wasting all the money.

The privilege of wasting money is a freedom that most desire.
When you said You know you should brew your own Folgers and quit wasting all the money, I thought you should wash out your mouth with soap. Then I realized you already were... ;~)

The idea that Apple would invest in a new product line, to discontinue it without even a CPU upgrade, is just absurd.
Let's just acknowledge that, (more than) sometimes, analysts deliberately talk out of their a*s to clickbait or to keep attention alive without having any kind of proof.
I agree. However, the 2019 Mac Pro might be just that. No updates since it came out, and will probably die on Monday. The 2013 Mac Pro was also that. No updates in its whole 6 year history.

Yeah but they still were on the market for a very long time.
The 2013 was widely regarded as a flop and Apple was struggling to find a direction for workstations back then.
The 2019 had no major upgrades but still widely configurable and expandable, different kind of appeal, also Apple is "justified" not upgrading an Intel because they are in the midst of a transition.
On the other hand, some people here were suggesting that Apple would refrain from dropping a readily available M2 Max/Ultra into the Studio and just discontinuing it which is just absurd.

If it's "just" a speed boost by moving from M1 to M2, I wonder why it took Apple so long. Not that I complain about the upgrade, I just don't understand why switching CPU takes Apple so long. Is it a production chain limitation ?

If you have the choice between making multiple iPhone chips or 1 single M2 Max chip, you would go for the multiple iPhone chips as it makes Apple more money.

Apple has now more than enough inventory for the iPhone which is old now, so now Apple can move some of that capacity to the Mac Studio.

Even if electricity bills are of no concern, one benefit of a more efficient processor is that you get the benefit of desktop form factors that normally wouldn't be feasible on PCs.

Take the M1 iMac for example. You are not going to find a PC equivalent that's just a screen. Likewise, the Mac Studio is small enough that you can tuck it under the Studio Display and not have it take up any extra space, in addition to being fairly quiet to operate. I believe Linus reviewed a similar mini desktop by HP and the conclusion was that it throttled way too much because the components generated way more heat than the small enclosure could handle, to the point where you would almost never get the performance advertised.

I think this is where the Mac Studio shines (and as its name suggests, it's likely aimed at creative professionals who are working primarily from home). By virtue of the M1x chip being way more efficient, it is able to compete on "niceness" and offer perks that Windows PCs simply can't offer. I admit that I can't quantify the benefits of a smaller form factor or a quieter working environment the same way I would with more ram, a faster processor or better graphics, but this doesn't mean they don't matter to their target audience.

Since the Mac Studio is supposedly only going to get a chip update, I guess there's no hope for a Studio Display update before the M3 computers start shipping in bulk, huh?

I can see an ARM Mac Pro using proprietary expansion cards. The question is if they will actually do it. My guess is no, since they want everything to be SoCs. They make more money selling new machines instead of parts for a machine.
True that! I suppose there are already PCI expansion boxes might make more sense for Apple to make their own. Although then maybe they should just make a Mac Pro anyway, I don’t know just can’t wait to see what happens. Exciting times.!

Recent Apple display releases:

March 2022
December 2019
July 2011
July 2010
October 2008
March 2006
June 2004

Based on that… a display release just over a year later? Not very likely.

Can you elaborate on that pls?
ah I would just like to know what kind of machine and when we can expect an apple silicon Mac Pro to make some business decisions. The Mac Pro is still flying, but I’d really rather have an M machine with all the video decoding enhancements and the improved overall snappiness of the system.
