Pls compute how much your suggested setup would cost someone who replaces their Mac every 10 years?

A decade ago that 5K display 600 nits we're enjoying now was a 2.5K display at half those nits.
I was only responding to you suggesting its time to upgrade “your” 2020 iMac. Perhaps I mis read.

Truth! It’ll be interesting to see if they actually come out with a Mac Pro.
Some of the rumors mentioned the processor being on a card, so you just buy more cards for more processing.
Going to be interesting for sure. Can’t wait to see what the price will be.🤪

I can see an ARM Mac Pro using proprietary expansion cards. The question is if they will actually do it. My guess is no, since they want everything to be SoCs. They make more money selling new machines instead of parts for a machine.

I never claimed I owned a 2020 iMac. I pointed out how long ago the last 27" was.

I get many here replace their Macs every spec bump but many of us want to keep them until after the final Security Update. Then upgrade to the next Mac released.

But I thought there wasn’t going to be a new Mac Studio because it would be “too similar to the Mac Pro”. That was a dumb rumor that I never believed. Even if a new Mac Pro were also coming, they’re not going to wait on updating a current Mac because it’s “too similar” to a new release.

You can build a PC and get much more performance for the same price as the M2 Ultra Mac Studio. Frankly, Apple Silicon on desktop makes no sense because performance per watt is of no concern. Who are Mac Studio's and the upcoming Mac Pro for? Apple can't compete with nVidia, AMD and Intel on desktop systems. Buying Apple desktop hardware is throwing away money.

kWh in the US is $0.180 at $15/hr min wage.

Where I am from it is $0.173 at $1.50/hr min wage.

Only if you compare iGPUs directly to dGPUs, which you really shouldn't.
No, even that is not correct. It's about the tasks at hand. Where Apple is weak is 3D. That's it. There are tons of other tasks GPUs are used for in video editing, image editing, etc. In those tasks the current AS GPUs do *extremely* well, and match the top of the line Nvidia GPUs. I know this because I own and use both; the Nvidia GPUs I have are dedicated to 3D rendering because they work very well there but when I benchmark them against the Apple Silicon Macs, they are at best equal and in some tasks beaten out by the AS GPU. This is in no small part to the large volume of high speed memory that the AS SoC architecture affords, but regardless, the day to day performance in applications I use to pay the bills is what matters.

It will be *very* interesting to see what happens when we get hardware RT in the M3 generation. That said, there's a shift to AI-based tasks now and while the Nvidia tensor cores do well here, some of the applications I have that are optimized to use Apples Neural Engine cores crush the top of the line Nvidia cards in terms of performance. That whole area is a space to watch as we see more and more things move in that direction.

I'll say this though: I wonder has Epic Games written the Unreal Engine 5.2 to natively support the multiple GPU setup of the Apple M-Series SoC. Unreal Engine 5.2 running in native mode on the M1 Max/Ultra and soon M2 Max/Ultra could result in some pretty astonishing graphics, in my opinion, which could make the Mac Studio a potentially great gaming platform.

All it takes to fix the whine is a proper heat sink and a low speed or no fan, but Apple fired all of there Heat Sink engineers years ago.
It's coil whine, not fan noise. I have three; one of them has it, the others do not.

It's inevitable that upgraded units will happen and do happen. After using a maxed 2014 iMac for 8 years I bit the bullet in November to buy a Max but still feel pissed that there will be a newer model announced within a week. I think more so because of the memory spec – 64gb is rubbish, 128gb is too expensive. 96mb would be great but the price will be a put off. You can't win, you just waste money...

I can only hope that Apple will also release the Mac Studio with the M3 chip next year. I have the M1 and I am no interested in an upgrade to a M2. It would be a pity if they only release the Mac Pro M3.

It's been determined that all the "whine" is, is a resonance created by the ventilation holes on the back. To fix it all you have to do is block off about an inch worth of holes on one side with some tape. Apple engineers can figure out a different way to fix it, but it doesn't require changes to the fan or heat sink.
Ahh, that makes sense. Another engineering failure.

I agree, given the MM case is the same as back in the day of a complete logic board with user-serviceable RAM, as well as having enough room for 2 HDDs or 1 HDD/1OD - the current setup means there's extra room for better cooling, but a lot of empty room as well.

The Studio is an odd one because there is a massive heatsink and fan that take up over half the volume (mostly for the M1 Ultra I guess), but otherwise it's barely more practical than the MM.

Typical Gurman. I guess his crystal ball was cracked when he said the Studio was only here for one generation.
That's why Gurman mostly avoids offering his opinions far out from events, but Bloomberg is probably getting tired of paying him to only report on stuff that is corroborated by 3 other sources, 2 days before they're announced (which is all he ever does).

So, you don’t want him to correct his predictions when he receives updated information? MacRumors wouldn’t exist with people like him, cut him some slack. It’s not like he’s Jon Prosser who just had incorrect prediction after incorrect prediction after incorrect prediction.
Macrumors could just as easily make stuff up months in advance, and then wait until 2 days before a product announcement to post what others have already posted...just like Gurman does.

I think worst case we get an m3max studio only.

Best case max/ultra m3 studio. Ultra/extreme m3 pro.

Funny, how apple can't come around with a mac pro with apple chip(s) for years now...
