Judging by how thin these are, I wouldn't be surprised if users are flexing the logic board...are we looking at a design flaw here? Could be.

New 13" MBA 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, heavy use mechanical (drag it around all day, not every time very careful placement) and heavy hardware use (CPU and GPU incl. hours of TF2/SC2 sessions, some parallel VMware sessions etc.).

Nothing bad happend till now. Very happy user here.

I think we have to keep the relation of high numbers sold units and some specific failure reports here in mind. Just change your defective units against new ones. Where is the issue?

senseless

to discuss with people about the quality of apple non consumer s h i t, which doesn't know the time for what apple stands for!

and btw: "You expect them to throw in a backlight into such a thin package? There was NONE book?"

that's what i mean with all these expert macbook switchers. the old one has backlight kb and it's thin too, or not?

books without backlight is more for consumers than for working people...

and you're right, im from dummland = germany ;-)

anyway, peace and have fun with your books but for me apple is now a shareholder oriented company.
the most income they generate with consumer s h i t and the stores.

My Apple MacBook Air 13"/2.13GHz CPU/4GB RAM/256GB SSD is experiencing these issues. I'm taking it to my local Chicago Apple store tonight.

It's worse when my MBA is on my desk with the sun shining on it, it locks up with a white, blue or black screen usually after about 20 minutes. If I move into the shade it seems ok, but then once a day or so it locks up with a static version of the screen in the video.

So last six months-

iPhone 4- proximity issues and grip-off-death
iPhoto '11- there go your pictures
iOS- alarms going off at wrong time
MacBook Air- suffering panic attacks

Go Apple.

My guess-

"We don't see functioning logic boards taking off right now.

I just received my MacBook Air and all seems fine.

People are complaining over the number of problems Apple has been having with some of their products but you guys must know that there products are of high quality and ahead of the game so there times we will see issues since Apple goes straight to newer tech.

Honestly from looking at the 4 Apple fails you listed, thats very minimal from everything that they've released.

Apple will look into these issues and make it a non-issue in future products.

Apple is growing strong.

Well if your Air is ok then this while story must be completely made up.

Your post seems to be suggesting that it's ok for Apple to release products which have common defects because they are using new technology. Did I miss something?

If I didn't then I disagree with your premise and your conclusion.

Does your MBA also vanish during the night, only to come back with red stains on the keyboard? Do you hear the sound of a bat prior to its vanishing? Does your macbook start acting funny around garlic? If you answered yes to all of these questions, then you, my friend, have a vampire MBA.

because of this, i'm either highly considering going back to apple and getting the applecare.

I did charge my MBA on an american express so I got an extra years warranty.

Fact: Apple has by all accounts been selling the new MBA like hotcakes -- I would guess over 100K units sold already

Fact: Some number of people on the internet are having what seem to be hardware problems -- looks like a dozen or two reports at most so far

Fact: Every single consumer electronics product manufactured has a certain number of bad units that go out the door, and this is of course more obvious when so many units are sold, and the people with problems post online for all to see

Fact: Apple seems to be taking care of customers who have the issue, and is generally known to stand behind their products -- highest consumer satisfaction rating in PC industry by far every year for years and years, yadda yadda

Conclusion: For now, appears to be in-line with every other consumer electronics product release in history. Why is this news again? Because there are some faulty units? When is this NOT the case? Anyway -- back up your data, and definitely consider AppleCare.

Thanks Steve :D

LMAO. Every product EVER released has issues. But .... Oh right. Apple **** is supposed to be perfect with no issues!!

Why do you even care? You will probably never own a MacBook Air!

Actually, I am considering the new MBA as a replacement for my 13" MBP.

I was at my local Apple Store getting a replacement superdrive ordered for my 27-inch iMac (under warranty), so I checked out the new MacBook Air. They had 3 11-inch models and 3 13-inch models.

The middle 11-inch unit was on a grey screen and seemed to be locked up. I hit the power button to cycle it down and then moved to the other side of the table to checkout the 13-inch units.

While looking at the 13-inch units, one of the workers walked by, glanced at the machine, and held the power button down very routinely (like she had done that before for that unit).

Not sure what's causing it -- could be any number of things hardware/software related (including the logic board). Hopefully its no more than a compatibility issue between the OS and the new hardware that can be fixed with a software update.

Mine should be arriving tomorrow! :D Fully-loaded 13", YES! It will be my only computer -- in addition to my employer-provided 15" MacBook Pro, of course.

I'm not too worried -- no Apple hardware can be as bad as the eMac -- man those things sucked! Early G5 flat-screen iMacs, too. Damn you, crappy capacitors!

I have an eMac never had a single issue with it and mine is on the model number affected, it has working fine since 2004, i haven't really ever had any issue what people complain about, it seems baffling to me. Now I do believe that some people genuinely do have an issue, as thats expected, but I do think a lot of posts could just be blatant lies, to make the issue seem much worse than it is.

I've never really ever had any major issue with any of my macs (been a Mac user since 1998). The worst issue for me was getting my old plastic plycarbonate MacBook & discovering the screen was awful, it was all dim and grey, took it back to the apple store & right away they got me a new one out & i know it was new, cos there where about 20-30 MacBook boxes out on the store floor, for people to pickup and buy, this with a simple time machine restore at home, I was back up and running in less than an hour, pretty impressive.

I bet they just went too far with trying to save power and are running the voltage for the chipset too low. I bet they'll just bring out a firmware update to raise the voltage or clock it down a bit.

Meh. I don't buy the rev A arguments. I've had lots of rev A machines that have been fine.

I also have two genuine Apple Stores with 5 miles of here and customer service is second to none. ;)

I echo this sentiment. Apple are second to none with their returns policy and customer service, especially in the UK.

I've also had multiple Rev A machines. What goes wrong on these might not go wrong on the next, but following revisions might have issues... it's just the way things go.

because of this, i'm either highly considering going back to apple and getting the applecare.

Either what or what?

I'd only buy Apple care the day before the product Apple care expires...

I was going to buy an MBA 11'' 2GB version but now after reading all this i'm kind of disappointed :(

You shouldn't base your opinions on anecdotal evidence. My experience has been the exact opposite: I've had a MacBook Pro 17", a white MacBook on loan, a silver MacBook for my wife, a white iMac 24", 2 silver iMacs and an ACD 24". Friends I've worked with over the past 2 years have also had 13/15/17" MacBook Pros, Mac Minis, iMacs of all sizes, a MacBook Air (old style) and Mac Pros.

I've not seen a single screen problem or a logic board issue. Not once.

I have seen a dead hard disk, one laptop refusing to recharge unless you waggled the power connector (the rev a white MacBook) and my 17" MBP has just developed an intermittent AirPort issue (but it is 3 years old and goes everywhere with me so it's probably wearing out). This is all anecdotal too, but problems are rare.

FWIW, I've just ordered a 13" MacBook Air

I had this issue on two 17" fully loaded MacBook Pros and a 15". Haven't seen it on any airs yet (deployed 9 of them so far, so not a large sample either)

They experimented with the logic board package to get them as thin as they are, so i can't say i'm all that surprised at the issues.

i have been having this same problem with my mbp and can't get apple to address it

this is not a rev a problem, or a thin display problem... i have been having this problem with my 13" mbp and have not been able to get apple to address it or do anything about it for the past 6 months. the related thread has 39,000 views and 242 replies, check it out here:

using a second monitor is impossible due to the fact that it seems to be one of the biggest triggers for the problem and crashes my machine within 5-10 minutes.

Again, there is no evidence this is widespread so let's no start to fault the design of the components. Jumping to conclusions over a few cases which might just be within the normal failure rate is plain irrational.

Apples history has shown that the majority of complaints are due to a small (say 2%) of customers (but it's important to Apple that ALL users , enjoy their purchased product as advertised).

That's why I said a fix will be soon.

I really hope that you will be fired for your posts, if you really are an Apple employee.

If you are not, I hope that you receive a nice cease and desist to stop falsely representing the company, followed by a lawsuit if don't.

I love the people who claim this is all just being blown out of proportion. I also love the people who are saying "more proof, all Macs are crap".

Only time will tell if this is a small number of users or a widespread issue. Both sorts of problems do exist in the real world. My brother was one of those "lucky" G3 iBook owners - Apple replaced his logic board multiple times. That was a serious, widespread problem. I owned the Rev. A 15" Powerbook with the infamous "white spot" issue - Apple replaced the display three times. That was a widespread problem, but fell more in the "annoying" category since the display would still work.

Not all Rev. A products are problematic though. My brother's Rev. A MacBook Air never gave him a problem; and my daughter's Rev. A iPad has been about perfect so far. My Rev. A iPod Touch has developed some eccentricities - but those seem to have followed being dropped on cement (several times). :D
