That's not a very specific answer. However, if say you have an i7-2620M, the improvement will be even less.I have the 2011 MacBook Pro core i7 I think it was.
The 2011 i7-2620M is probably around as fast as a 2016 m5-6Y54 MacBook, give or take.

That is probably the i7-2720QM. That is likely much faster than all of the 2018 MacBooks.I’m not very spec wise so i don’t know other than I have a 2011 MacBook Pro 15”, 2.2GHz Quad core, 750GB hard drive with 8GB Ram.

So if my 2011 MacBook Pro is faster than the 2018 MacBooks, will I even notice any difference when buying a 12” MacBook or should I just opt for the 13” MacBook Pro?

[/QUOTE said:Perhaps this makes me somewhat more anti-social than you, but I would find this an awful experience. Mainly because the Apple stores near me are already really busy/crowded. I would seriously dislike the added noise and commotion that would come with also making it a Starbucks.
I am sure lots of people would prefer it, though. And the modern stores already do have a feel that starts to approach something like this . . . I just prefer it to be a place I can purchase something quickly and/or get support quickly. Everything else should be removed.
Grumble, grumble . . . get off my lawn!
If anybody has any opinion on this I'd appreciate it! [/QUOTE said:I think the Macbook (vs the 13" Macbook Pro) would be a better fit for you. This is just based on my own experience, and what you have already written.
For my own thin/light laptop needs . . . meaning, I have also used and continue to use more powerful and larger laptops and desktops for other things . . . I have moved from a late 2008 Macbook Air (only 13" at that time), to a mid June 2012 11" Macbook Air, to a 2015 Macbook (only 12"), to a 2017 Macbook (only 12"). Again, in all that time I have also used thicker/heavier/more powerful laptops, too. I just find it a completely different experience. And the small/thin/light option has gotten a lot better over time. The move to SSDs from spinning disks probably made the most difference. But this last year's move to a 16GB ram option has made a real difference, too. Hmm . . . actually, there really have been several noticeable differences of course, including the Retina screen, and the weight savings (I think the original one I had was about 3lbs, then the 11"er was ~2.4lbs).
Outside of my iPhone, in the end, I have gotten to the point where I think I use the 2017 Macbook for the slim majority of all my current computing needs . . . and I have a lot of computing needs. This includes a workstation-class desktop at home, another two laptops (mostly relegated for very specific needs having to do with my work), and an iPad. I had strong hopes that I would eventually be able to replace my "thin and light" laptop needs with an iPad, but for various reasons, that has not yet come to pass. The laptop has become so capable and light that if it were not for very specific needs that are probably not common, I would guess the majority of people could actually use it as their only computer *as long as* you do not have a lot of data (or have a NAS) and you have a dock/monitor/wireless mouse and keyboard combo for when you need to sit at a desk. People say this is true about students, but I have a large-ish family, and I think it is true for every family member but two (me and one other).
If you can, definitely wait for 2018, though. At that point, the 2017 models will sell for several hundred dollars less if you want to go that route; you probably get this 3rd generation keyboard; you probably get a faster processor; and you might get a faster USB port.

Even the 2017 is noticeably more responsive than the 2015. The 2018 should feel even faster. While I am happy with my 2015 MacBook, I will probably get a base 2018 model around Black Friday, if price is right
Hi Dave!
I think that you'll know which one you love the most when you see them both side by side.
Wait for the new MacBook with the 3rd generation keyboard and then compare the two.
Also, it depends on how much you want to spend of course.
Go to an Apple store, have a coffee and something nice to eat and take your time. Enjoy the experience. (WHY do they not have Baristas in Apple Stores and a nice place to eat & chat?)
THEN leave the store without buying.
Then, return a few days later. WHY? Because it's amazing how you can be impressed upon a first visit and then not be so impressed on the second viewing. By doing this, you'll know what feels right to you!
Only you can decide. But you must feel 100% certain.
(I did this a few years ago, I bought a pair of Atomic Floyd Super Dart earphones from the Apple Store. Great reviews in all of the mags, online etc and on Apple site itself but something just didn't do it for me.
I was tempted to return them the following week but decided to keep them in the end. Long term - I was never truly happy with them - they lacked bass, were heavy because of the metal design AND the kevlar cable wore out on the headphone jack in time - which was the reason that I bought them because the Kevlar was supposed to be strong. It wasn't!
Now I have AirPods and they are damn fantastic HOWEVER before that, I used the Apple EarPods and at £25 they were great and that's coming from a pair of £200 earphones. Were the SuperDarts 8 times better sounding than the Ear Pods? No way - not even twice!!!

I had the same dilemma. Ultimately i went with the nTB 13" MBP because it offered better value in my eyes.If anybody has any opinion on this I'd appreciate it!

Plus, I really don't like the 2015's keyboard. The 2017's keyboard isn't stellar, but it's still a vast improvement over the 2015's IMHO.
I have a late 2013 15inch Macbook pro and i've had the 2015 12inch Macbook and now currently have the 2017 12inch "i7" Macbook.
I use these computers for pretty heavy Lightroom work, photo editing, emails, internet etc
Here is my verdict.
Even though the 2013 15inch is a more "powerful" cpu and a fantastic machine, I find myself almost exclusively using the 2017 12inch Macbook. I think it is an incredible form factor that I can take with me everywhere I go and not notice its weight/size. It is "fast enough" for everything I have used it. No issue with Lightroom editing. The only time it is slow, and by slow, noticeably slow, is on in-port/exporting/processing files - so i'm guessing if you are doing heavy encoding/processing tasks it wouldn't be an ideal choice, but for short intensive tasks, like editing adjustments etc, it is perfectly fine for me.
The difference between the 2015 and 2017 is night and day. The 2015 has noticeable issues, lag etc.
I am personally excited to see what the 2018 model brings, and if it is a noticeable improvement similar to the performance boost of the 2017 over the 2015 in speed I will seriously consider it.
Something else to note. I really wish apple would get rid of that stupid gimmick touch bar on the pros and beyond fingerprint ID, i seriously hope they DO NOT bring it to the Macbook.
Hi Paul, I'm taking tomorrow off work and i will be meeting up with some friends for a trip to Birmingham, while there i will go into the Apple store (i never miss a trip to the Apple store any time i'm at a city that has one), while there i will be looking at the new 13" MacBook Pro that just got updated and the 12" MacBook side by side, i try both out! even tho the 2018 MacBook hasn't been announced yet i don't think there will be a redesign so apart from the 3rd generation Butterfly keyboard and some new internal specs i don't think there will be much difference between the current 2017 and the 2018 when it finally get's an update.
Actually your suggestion of having a Barista inside of Apple store's is a great idea, many people (myself included) spend a good chunk of time inside of Apple stores so it would certainly be a great idea.
I have seen the 12" MacBook a few times in the Apple store (i've posted about it a few times i'm sure) i even tested out last years model while i was there and i was impressed, i continue to be impressed with the size and weight of the 12" MacBook but also the fact that Apple have managed to put a full-size keyboard and trackpad inside.
My thought's tomorrow when testing them out side by side are going to be centred around which one (12" MacBook or 13" MacBook Pro) can i easily take around the house, also put in my bag and take with me (on the very small occasions that i do that) but also work well with my iMac 2012 (until i update that) and my iPad Pro 12.9" second generation.
The devices i own all have different use cases, iPad Pro 12.9" is great for drawing and editing photos in Affinity Photo, my 27" iMac is great as my main desktop to edit small videos in Final Cut or even iMovie, and it's great for split screen when writing and putting Safari side by side.
But i still need something that i can carry around the house, sit out in the garden with and write for long periods of time, i find that my iMac just isn't that neither is my iPad Pro (mainly because as much as i love IOS i also love MacOS for working).
You love it because you use Final Cut X.It's funny isn't how Touch Bar is a 50 /50. People either LOVE IT or HATE IT. Personally, I love it. Final Cut Pro X is SUPERB using TB!!! I'm not sure why people don't like it. To me, it makes the MacBook Pro look really modern![]()
You love it because you use Final Cut X.
Judging by my friends and family and posts in this forum. I'd guess two-thirds of those who absolutely love the Touch Bar are Final Cut X users.
I think the oposite. The nTB MBP has that sophisticated simplicity the Apple laptops are known for. On the other had, the pixelated touchbar slapped on top of the keyboard looks like a cheap afterthought. Something ASUS gaming laptops would have. Shame, as it ruins the visual experience that the excellent retina screen provides.Being honest, I love the design implementation of it on a MacBook Pro. I very seldom use the F keys (only for volume adjustment and that's it) and to me, the TB makes the whole design look so much more modern. To me, the non TB version looks like a real cheaper, basic version because of the lack of it.
Each to their own, but I love it![]()

Dont have the Apple TV but I fully agree with you on the X and especially on the airpods. There you go buddy. It's a 50/50 thing amongst us Mac boys![]()

OH WOW! Have a great time Dave. Yes, Angela, Head of Apple's stores has always talked about making Apple Stores a more lifestyle gathering place and it's crying out for a cool bar organic food area!
Look how well it works at RAPHA the cyclin brand. I've also got to say, being an espresso EXPERT, the Rapha shop has the BEST tasting espresso in the UK by far!!!!! It's strong and incredible to the taste. Also amazing orange cake with cream cheese frostingAnd fab bags of granola for sale
I had an iMac at university and a desktop to me was so inconvenient. It now sits in a corner in a spare room and gets used once every 2 years sadly.
VERY INTERESTING that the non TB MacBook Pro has not been updated with no new keyboard even. What does that indicate? The fact that it's going to be replaced very very very soon?
Exciting times.
Gotta say, I've quite fallen for the 13" TB MacBook Pro. IF ONLY they could of made a 12" one!
I'll be gutted when they discontinue the rose gold on the MacBook. I love that colour as it changes in sunlight and always looks beautiful.
The Touch Bar seems very popular among people who use Final Cut Pro X, it speeds up the work flow for a lot of editors.
Yea i think Angela is certainly pointing Apple in that direction think it's a great way for them to go, during yesterdays visit to the Birmingham Apple store i noticed that there is a lot of "wasted space" in the stores where they could easily put a coffee bar and seating area.
It was a great day with a few friends, we tried the drinks at Hotel Chocolat, the cold coffee was really nice in the hot weather
I tried out both the MacBook Pro's and the 12" MacBook, i did keep going back to the 12" MacBook, it's such a great size that i can carry around the house as well as out and about. Also using the "more space" option in the display setting's i tested out my work flow, i opened Pages (they don't have apps like Final Draft in the store) and Safari using split view i was easily able to type while also looking at Safari tabs (something i do while researching or general web browsing).
Even tho i liked the Touch Bar on the MacBook Pro and the 13" really seemed portable i do think that when Apple update the 12" MacBook later this year that it will be the one that i buy. I wouldn't mind if they made 13" version but if they don't i will be more than happy to buy the 13" MacBook, either in gold or space grey i'm thinking
I was surprised by something that i didn't think i would be, while in Birmingham i did go to Currys PC World and played around with the Surface devices, to be fair the Surface Pro was impressive (it was my first hands on with one fully) for a Windows running machine, it felt premium and the software it was running seemed to be just as fast as when using touch on the iPad. I came out of the store being pretty impressed to be honest.
My take away thoughts were better than i had anticipated:
I think if Apple were to do this with MacOS they could really knock it out of the park
- The display on the Surface Pro and the Surfacebook was better than i had thought.
- They were very responsive
- The keyboard on the Surface Pro didn't seem as cheap and plasticly made as it may look
- Windows seems optimised well for touch
