Ordered a 12" Macbook via reseller on Feb 16. Delivery date initially was end of Feb, status now is "sent to production" and ETA is March 20. New model coming up?

That doesn’t really follow. It sounds like your 2017 MacBook order just got delayed.

I could be wrong but I’m not expecting a new MacBook any time soon anyway. MacBook Pro in Q2 or Q3 though maybe.

So - that's only a few weeks away. Maybe there's not much to upgrade this year. Maybe a quiet and small spec bump to hold the market over until Ice Lake? The question there would be what chips are available to spec bump to?

I just realized i've been dreaming. Apple is always 'late' in upgrading chips. This would put an new MacBook in the mail for me in 2019 earliest. Reality...it sucks.

No, not really. For example, people were wondering why the MacBook didn't get updated when the new Kabinakagami Lake Y chips launched in 2016.

The 7th Generation Core m3, i5, and i7 all launched in 2016 Q3. The 7th generation MacBook didn't launch until 2017 Q2. Well, it turns out the reason is that the 2016 Q3 Core m3 was a crappy one, the 7Y30, and all of the 3 models were also missing a key feature.

In 2017 Q2, Intel updated them all to add that new feature - HDCP 2.2 support - and Intel also added a whole new Core m3 model, the 7Y32. This was vastly faster than the older 7Y30. Shortly after the launch of the new Core m3, and the updated Core i5 and i7, Apple launched the new MacBooks.

---

The problem in 2018 though is that there are unlikely to be any Y series updates any time soon, so don't expect a 12" MacBook update in the near term.

Gave up on waiting, and ordered the base version from Amazon. They have it at 1099 currently. If an updated model comes, I'll pass this on to wife/daughter, and get one with 16gb RAM.

I feel like everything is on schedule, intels already said they shipped 10nm products in December 2017 and a damp up throughout 2018 is on track. I see no reason the Y series wouldn’t be in the initial shipment since that’s usually the first mobile processor they launch for the new generations.

I keep almost pulling the trigger but I think I’m gonna hold off since I don’t even need a MacBook at the moment, easier for me to say no that and BestBuy doesn’t have the color I want in stock.

That's just it. 8th gen U has already launched. So far it's in the form of Kaby Lake Refresh U, with Coffee Lake U due out in the next month or so. Furthermore, Intel has already leaked info that Cannon Lake U has shipped (albeit in limited fashion).

Meanwhile, 8th Generation Y is nowhere to be seen, despite the fact that for 5th gen (2014), 6th gen (2015) and 7th gen (2016), Y launched before U.

Browsing here with base 2017.

Base 2017 doesn't playback 4k 60fps for me without dropped frame.
Hoping one comes out this year so I can upgrade.

Considering it has hevc, I’m confused why yours is dropping frames. Are you streaming video?

Oh! You just reminded me that a lot of my videos are VP9. I guess HEVC doesn't help there? Hmm maybe I should transcode them, eh.

Hmmm... People say this guy is a reliable leaker for Intel chip info:

“CNL-Y is still on track for June 2018.

So, there we have it. That would mean a dual-core Cannon Lake 10 nm update for the 12” MacBook in 2018, likely in Q3.

Quad-core Ice Lake 10 nm wouldn’t happen until 9 months or so after that, in 2019 Q2/Q3.

I wonder if the dual core will be a big upgrade for the 12" MacBook, it will be interesting to see how they develop this MacBook especially if they are going to be updating or adding to the MacBook Air range.

I ordered a 12" MacBook with an i7 and 16GB of Ram on Saturday (March 10) with an estimated delivery of March 28. It went from "Preparing for Dispatch" to "Dispatched" this morning (March 14).

Two weeks seems a long time for the MacBook to travel from China to the UK. Last BTO MacBook I ordered, a MacBook Pro in 2014, took 7 days between order and delivery.

I’m going to wait and see if the rumoured 13” version of the MacBook is announced at either the March 27th event or WWDC in June if not I might just buy what’s available to try, seems a bit pointless to wait until 2019 just for a bit of a spec bump. However if they do release a 13” version I’d be all for that on day one.

Quad core would be rather more than a bit of a spec bump!

But not until next year and it’s not going to be like Intel i7 quad core that’s in the 15” MacBook Pro obviously the one for the MacBook will be low power which is cool but is it worth waiting a year for? Also if they are going to be announcing a 13: version of the MacBook are they just going to put better specs in that?

No, obviously a low power quad core, but likely to be a good speed doubling of current dual core low power generation. Whether its worth waiting a year for is very much a personal decision. I would like to upgrade my 2016 M5. I normally always buy refurbs or second hand, which would mean 2020 for a quad for me, so an interim upgrade is probably on my horizon.

Not that Apple is going to introduce any new MacBooks tomorrow - but there's only one (from 2015) available on the Apple refurb site. Might that be a sign?

Doesn't look good for this. Just doesn't feel like anything.

I'm presently practicing my yawns. Good to stretch the muscles :D
