That's what I was talking about Apple building in some cushion to protect themselves.

Yes, cushion. But just when it serves them ;)

...which I suppose also applies to lowering prices.

Nope. I'm from Croatia. Our currency is called 'Kuna'. 1$ = 4.5kn, but then rapidly climbed to 1$ = 5.7kn. And it stayed like that for a long time. Apple didn't adjust their prices. But when kuna weakened, guess what they promptly do? And now 1$ = 6.2kn. Still no price reduction.

So, cushion yes... But only when it is in Apple interest :)

I currently have two identical Macbook Airs for the wife and me: 2013 11" MBA i7 8GB RAM and 512GB SSD. They are by no means inadequate right now, but I think it may be time to upgrade within a year or two. If Apple updates the rMB to have more than one USB port and a better battery, I think I'd be on board for buying two of them.

They won’t update the Air, the latest rumour is that they will introduce a 13” version of the MacBook and discontinue the Air.

Right, I meant if they update the Macbook to have more than USB port. Post above edited for clarity.

Oh ok sorry I thought you meant if they updated the Air, personally I’m waiting to see if they announce the 13” version this year hopefully with higher specs than the current 12” MacBook.

I wouldn't mind a larger version, but I think 1" difference is negligible at the lowe end. I think an ideal Macbook lineup would be something like this:

12" Macbook
14" Macbook
14" Macbook Pro
16" Macbook Pro

I know the old 17" Macbook Pros had a solid fanbase, and some miss that screen real-estate. Given the higher pixel density, and smaller bezels, I think it would make a lot of true Pros quite happy to see something bigger than the current 15" screen.

I imagine the new lineup as:

13” MacBook
13” MacBook Pro
15” MacBook Pro

I doubt they do two different sized MacBooks with one still being 12”

I imagine the new 2018 lineup as:

12" MacBook dual-core 16 GB
13" MacBook Pro quad-core non-Touch Bar 16 GB
13" MacBook Pro quad-core Touch Bar 16 GB
15" MacBook Pro hex-core Touch Bar 16 GB, with Core i9 option

I imagine the new 2019 lineup as:

12" MacBook quad-core 16 GB
13" MacBook Pro quad-core non-Touch Bar 32 GB
13" MacBook Pro quad-core Touch Bar 32 GB
15" MacBook Pro hex-core Touch Bar 32 GB, with Core i9 option

ie. More cores but no big change in form factor in 2018, and no 13" MacBook. 32 GB max in 2019.

The rumours are saying that Apple will replace the Air with a new entry level 13” MacBook this year, Mark Gurman from Bloomberg who is very reliable when it comes to Apple said:

“Apple is working on at least three updated Mac models with custom co-processors for release as soon as this year,”

IIRC, the 13" MacBook rumour was from DigiTimes. Mark Gurman didn't say anything about that.

No he didn’t but he did say what I quoted underneath with the speech marks, 3 new Macs with custom co-processors. The 13” MacBook has been around since at least last year.

Notice how he said "updated laptops and a new desktop"?

No mention of a new laptop, just a new desktop. We already knew a new desktop is coming, and that's the Mac Pro.

IOW, I think some of the bloggers out there were trying way too hard to combine Mark Gurman's statements with DigiTimes dodgy prediction, and I don't buy it.

Yea i agree with the first part but i do think they are working on a bigger version of the 12" MacBook to replace the Air, the Air does need to go and a bigger version of the MacBook to replace it would be better, as it stands i couldn't buy a MacBook Air and i just don't think the 12" MacBook would do it so yea i would like to see a bigger higher spec'd version of the MacBook.

On a different note i wonder what the "new" desktop will be? could it be a redesigned iMac maybe.

Personally I think they’ll cut prices on the MacBook eventually and keep the MacBook Air around until then.

And as mentioned, the new desktop is likely just the Mac Pro.

Or perhaps an optimistic person might think the Mac mini will FINALLY get an update, in a new form factor.

Them = people who voted for Brexit and caused UK pound to collapse. Apple actually took shockingly long to raise the prices.
Only, the £ NEVER reached the $1.20 which would have warranted $-£ price parity... it came quite close, briefly, down to about 1.2065 but not for more than a few hours. It's lowest sustained average was about $1.25 and for most of last year it was trading $1.30+. Now it's bumping along at $1.40 and Apple are taking shockingly long to adjust downwards again

But that means your currency is depreciating against the $ - think of it like this $1=Kn1 means a currency unit is worth 1 dollar - $1=Kn10 means a currency unit is worth 10 cents... if anything expect prices to go up

I could be wrong but i just think Apple need to replace the Air and the 12" MacBook doesn't have enough screen or specs for some people. I love the design of the MacBook and it's retina screen is much better than that of the Air which is why i think Apple could replace the Air with a bigger version whether that's 13" 14" or even a 15" version i don't know.
Also it's not just DigiTimes that have said it, Ming-Chi Kuo has also mentioned it.

It might be an updated Air after all, if they were to add a retina screen and up to date specs I’d pick one up but I doubt that will happen since it’s said to be a “cheaper model”

Oh great: "The cheaper MacBook could get the coveted touch bar". This sounds like a good idea. Add the worthless TB and shave off cost everywhere else.

Why don't they just subcontract it out to some China outfit? Stamp it with the 'coveted' Apple brand.

insider :D

Seriously, can they PLEASE get rid of that damn MacBook Air. it's an embarrassment to Apple. It does not represent their way of forward thinking - USB-C, butterfly keyboard etc. It's last decade on sale in 2018.

The old 'thing' should have been buried in 2015 when the MacBook came along. Simply add 128GB SSD and drop the price by £200. Now the MacBook was £1050 before Brexit, so 128GB might of taken it to £850.

Those silver bezels on the Air look revolting. It's a year 2000 design and completely confusing to a new Apple buyer. Plus it's a bad Apple experience compared to the rest of the line up.
Sorry, but i've never liked that damn MacBook Air with its horrible bezels, tinny sounding speakers and low res screen. Just plain horrible. I hate it in every respect. It's a joke or an insult in 2018 or 2015!!! Retina on a phone since 2010 and this piece of horribleness in 2018! And that's from a guy who's used Macs since 1995!!
Words just can't describe how horrible the MacBook Air is.
Now, the 12" MacBook - to me, the best Apple design of all time!

They will probably fix the Air line-up. It would be inconceivable not to. I've just got an issue with the touch bar. It worries me a bit.

How are they going to fix it tho? I wish they would either put a Retina display in along with a little performance boost or just scrap it and introduce a bigger 13” or 14” MacBook.

Personally I think they may just discontinue the Air in 2019.

Even if they update it to this new model this year?
