I've always thought a notch could work for a Macbook Pro, if it's designed correctly the only thing it gets in the way of is the menu bar and it allows the screen to be as big as it needs to be without sacrificing the webcam.
Also since the aspect ratio of the display is 16:10 it's not going to get in the way of full-screen video either. Actually, maybe it would get in the way of 4:3 content but if the black levels are really good you could probably have a full-screen mode where it avoids the notch and one where it doesn't.
I kind of like the idea if it produces a really nice new design but I'm not really bothered if it turns out not to be true.

How many of you actually have anything occupying the menu bar in the centre of their screen right now?

I have nothing. Curious to know about other users.
I use iStatMenus, so my widgets extended from the right into the middle. I have CPU load graphs there at the moment. That said, I could adapt pretty easily.

No speaker, no Face ID components.
One of the reasons the notch was able to shrink 20% with the iPhone 13 was because the Face ID components shrunk. If there’s no face ID components, there’s there’s no need for it to be that big.
This rumor is completely false
The notch is smaller, but taller in the 13, because the earpiece is now above the sensor array.

Yep, at this point, I’m gonna guess it is a 16:10 “screen”, and your normal menu bar and such sits within the 16:10 area, and the notch stripe contains the notch (obviously), along with some of the indicators that traditionally occupy the right side of the menu bar, like signal strength and volume indicators, the clock, and such, similar to what they do on the iPhone. Existing software doesn’t need to know about it, they see an unbroken 16:10 rectangle, probably some new functions in the OS to manipulate the new regions to the left and right of the notch.
If so, they couldn’t be clickable…. I think it would be supremely annoying to have to stop the mouse on the menu bar mid screen.

I am staring at a full screen Safari window right now. The space you mention is occupied by an address bar that reads forums.macrumors.com. What a relief. They had me considering the prospect of a notch for a moment there.

You can’t have a notch on a god damn desktop / laptop computer. It will be the biggest fail for Apple if this turns out to be not a joke. Wtf
You have a choice between pixels and not pixels— why would you choose not pixels?

Imagine if they make the screen glass/shell thick enough (glass being thicker for mini LED on iPad Pro 12.9 M1, for instance) to house under-screen Face ID and introduce it on these devices. Then it could trickle down to the phones, etc. in future years as some rumours have hinted at. At a minimum, perhaps a hole punch? Zero logic for a notch if they can fit it into a bezel, and they've obviously been working hard at shrinking the notch size as it is given iPhone 13's slightly reduced dimensions.

Legit hope they don't make the MacBook Pros needlessly thinner. Not gonna lie, it hasn't felt the same since the days I owned my retina 13-inch from late 2012. The flat-edged design rumour, combined with Apple making some devices slightly thicker lately, has me crossing my fingers. Let's focus on battery, durability, and thermal efficiency along with ports.

And as a writer interested in the 14-inch model, you'd damn well better not give me rounded corners. Don't forget the PRO in MacBook Pro. If I want something just for entertainment, I'd use my iPad, dang it!

I don't like the idea of rounded corners in a display, especially in a computer. Also, the idea of a notch is just plain unnecessarily for a device with the footprint of a laptop, just give it a few extra millimeters of bezel at the top.
Seriously, I'd take the hit of losing all of 45px across the top of the display, versus having to look at that g-d thing all day.

What if the design is for a 74px touch bar at the top of the screen, with the camera in the middle...

The menu bar is 44 pixels high, why would there be a 72 pixel high notch?? It would cut in to the desktop.

Makes no sense. Maybe they made a rendering of a MacBook Pro with a notch, as a joke, then started a rumour to fit the image. :)
