I was unlikely to buy a new machine before this event was even announced, but all of the stuff that was shown off has me in a "wtf" state of mind.

Something that could have been pretty darn cool (the touch bar) has pretty much be ruined by the absurd price increases, soldered on storage, lack of 32GB option on all the builds, removal of the magsafe (or lack of a good replacement), and other needless changes.

The track pad looks absurdly large also.

In a year, people knocking the touchbar will hide and become silent. The touchbar constitutes a great advancement for usability. Too bad some people just can't see it.

This was an unnecessary update. Not even DDR4 RAM? I glad I picked my Early 2015, its probably gonna be my first and last Mac. For what most people do with a computer, its 2016, make it reasonable, I know it cost money to make, but its not like you are going broke.

I love my Google Pixel XL. I'll keep my 2009 MBP with 8Gb and 256 SSD running on El Capitan, and give a high-end Chromebook a try. These new MBP's are too expensive, and the OLED panel is a nice touch (pun intended) but dongle requirements and no mag-safe is sad.

I had a hole burning in my wallet to replace my MBA mid-2011.
But having looked at the UK prices, the only people who might be able to afford these are the people on the front row at the launch - Mrs Ahrendts and her pals.
And selling at £1,749 with just 256gb SSD is simply crazy.
I better plug that hole with some BluTack.

Pricing in Denmark is through the roof.

The new, high end 15" MacBook Pro with 512GB SSD is now 25.000,-
The old, high end 15" MacBook Pro with 512GB SSD was 20.000,- DKK.
Wow.

What bothers me most about these new machines are the weak graphics.
At these prices I expected much more.

This was the first time in many many years that I simply said "Screw it! I am done!". I always found something positive in the freshly presented Macs, their screen, their design, some features... this time, nothing. Even without seeing the price, I told to myself "this is just a pile of crap".
Ah, I am on the market for a decent laptop, since my 11" MBA from 2011 is almost ready to be dismissed. So my pocket was/is ready. Pity I will have to invest my money on a Razer Stealth + Razer Core. For less than 2000 pounds I can get a maxed out FHD portable laptop and turn it into a blazing fast gaming or production machine.
I will keep my iPad, only because I need iMessage and some music apps. But after today Apple computers are dead to me.

My first reactions - no extra colour options , just the same old Space Grey and Silver. :( And the pricing on the top-spec 15" Retina MacBook Pro, (without some very necessary extras), has increased by a whopping €1410 from €4,538 to €5,948.

Think positive, a base £1,449.00 Macbook Pro costs around £2,600.00 in Brazil.

€3199 in Belgium? Apple, you can **** right off! It's totally ridiculous - € is 1.09 to the $, the face price should be cheaper (and yes, I realise the sales taxes aren't show on the US prices, but they aren't that much).

Funnily enough, my "Late 2013" 15" 2.3 16GB still runs like it's new, think I'll just stick with that.

My son needs a new iMac, where are they? I'd even be prepared to invest in a Mac Pro for him, if it had a decent graphics card.

Hopeless.
As currencies get cheaper/weaker, prices must rise..that's going to be your new retail level now for at least a couple years so IF you could get the euro up, you'd be golden

I love those machines. a real nice evolution. but i'll tell you what: let's NOT buy any new macbook pro just because of their INSANE price policy. Apple has reached a time where the need to be teach a basic "money" lesson: prices too high no buyers. INSANE.

Its not a money lesson, it is a design lesson. Apple expects us to pay a hefty price for sleek, thin, multiple colors. They want to make a fashion statement. I want a computer (not talking about phones or TVs), not a fashion statement. If it looks good, then excellent, if not, no big deal. What is unfortunate is Apple's total disregard for usability, performance, and options. They try to be all inclusive, unless you are a pro users, then you don't matter. It doesn't make sense to me, other than Pro users are a little bit more skeptical and I guess that is too much focus for Apple, they seem to only want to appeal to the ignorant and uninformed.

What they need to do is make the MacBook Pro a little thicker, with more memory, more power, and internal design to lower production cost. Sure it may not be as sleek as the MacBook, hereinafter referred to as the fashion model, that is slim, sleek, underpowered, with no connectors. But thats OK. Apple should be appealing to all potential users, but alas, they aren't and they have no intention of doing so.

The problem with the keynote today, was the excessive time spent on thinner and lighter. They just don't get it. I don't pull out my laptops to show people my fashion sense.

I've never owned a non-Apple computer and it now looks like I will trudge through that morass. Hopefully, others feel the same way, because if they don't Apple will never get it.

LOL mmmkay... I guess you mean Apple should have designed a laptop for YOU; otherwise, they appeal to the ignorant and uninformed. Got it.

Only if the App uses significant GPU/hardware acceleration (like phones do). The intel GPU should easily do 4k60p realtime h264 encoding* (using intel QuickSync). That editing itself however requires CPU power as well, that can't always be offloaded to the GPU, which is why I wouldn't rely on tech-specs here. depends quite a lot on the application. => Try before you buy!

*at least a intel HD 4600 could do that back in 2013: https://software.intel.com/en-us/forums/intel-media-sdk/topic/401155

Thank you VERY much for this detailed answer!

LOL with that pricing? GET OUT OF HERE! Who do they think their customer base is consisted of?

One word: Professionals.

Same group like us back 20 years ago. The 15" fully loaded cost less than my 2013 MBP. What's up with the complains? Yes, 2GB SSD is too expensive. But we know Apple charges.

And the TouchBar has it's unique application features. I think its amazing for 3d, motion graphics, and print.

Cheers.

You've been a MacRumors member since 2003 and your first and last Mac is the Early 2015 MacBook Pro??
You have more restraint than I do!

You guys are missing the point. It's $400 more for

1) MUCH Better display
2) MUCH better speakers
3) MUCH thinner / lighter
4) Classier keyboard
5) Touchbar
6) Etc.

It's better in every way (by a lot). I think we were being ridiculous thinking it'd be the same price or only a little more.

The only thing I'm annoyed about is the 256gb base for the 15". I mean REALLY APPLE, REALLY.

I laughed out loud when I read this. Just wonderful Apple. You added a stupid touch bar and jacked up the price so much that even Apple diehards are saying no. I've been watching you push out overpriced hardware for years and this is the first time I've seen the diehard Apple fans actually disappointed.

When a post about new Microsoft products has more positive feedback than the Apple product launch on a Mac-centric forum, you know you've messed up.

Spot on mate, well said.

This whole situation is a train wreck and I completely agree with who ever said they were selling their Apple stock. If I owned Apple stock I would be $h!tting myself right now

As others have said, truly a sad day.

My wife was holding out for a new MacBook Air for her second year at uni but caved a few weeks ago and bought a HP Envy. Neither of us like Windows but it looks like I'll be following suit. I was all set for a new Mac to replace my dying 2011 15" i7 model, but there's no way on this earth that I would pay those prices, whether I could afford it or not.

Even the Dell XPS 15's look like excellent value compared to these.

In the US, yeah it's $400 more, but in the UK, the 15" mode has gone up by around £800. That just doesn't make sense.

Thanks for sharing!

I will never buy a sewing machine, so I think I'll go and find a sewing machine forum and let them know (that I'll never buy one). ;)

Great post man. Now beat it and head over to your sewing machine forum. GR ;)

Seriously: €5000 in the Netherlands for a maxed out 15" MBP without even factoring in Apple Care and ALL the dongles I'll inevitably need to make this computer functional. €1440 to get the SSD to 2TB, are they serious? I've been waiting to upgrade both my 2013 rMBP and my 2011 27" iMac and I was bitterly disappointed on both fronts. After using Macs since 2004, this may be the end of the line with Apple hardware for me. I'm priced out, all my peripherals are incompatible and I'm just not feeling it anymore. But I do use Final Cut, Affinity and Sketch quite intensively and I don't want to leave the Apple ecosystem just yet. At the same time I need more muscle for my projects. What choice do I have?
