Basically, I've pretty much decided that the only way I make the switch at this refresh is if I see a machine with the following specs:

MBP 13-14"
i5 sandybridge
128gb SSD
4gb ram
a reasonable video card that can power dual monitors
$1200

Give me that, apple, and I'll convert.

I guess you're not converting. LOL

Ok, so if there are going to be new MBPs next week, then why hasn't Apple announced any press event?

I agree with the idea that, if this were something really major, wouldn't there have been a press event?

No? Mac Minis were redesigned and updated without any event

Yes, but if the update included "Copper-peak" they would have held a press conferese 'quese then they can show the hole world (again) that they have "the best" technology…

Because the new lineup is merely a spec bump.

That... and any inference to new products would bring sales to a grinding halt for those few days.

As long as Best Buy has these products for sale by next Thursday is fine with me.. I had to break down and buy a new MacBook Pro Thursday... Will be great to just go return this and get the newer Machine!!!!

...which would be very un-Apple-esque, as then their new MBP series would feel slower in stores than the much cheaper MBAs (e.g. when launching apps). And I doubt Apple will integrate SSDs in their MBPs without a redesigned chassis - unless they decide not to use the blade-SSDs. But that'd be unexpected too.

I wonder if they usually ship them like that during minor spec bumps. I'm guessing they wouldn't if there was no real changes to the MBP's.

There, you've a point...

I think they will probably announce a press event on tuesday so that they can dominate headlines for the 2 days preceding the event. I'd be shocked if they dont do an overhaul beyond sandy bridge as they have tended to change the external design about every 2-3 years. If they dont do light peak or some large screen equivalent to a retina display then their big wow factor would be SSD/HDD hybrid system which wouldnt generate much amazement. But with such a huge delay between MBP's they'd be foolish not to at the least hold a major presser as anticipation is pretty huge. The retina display idea probably wont be a factor as they cant even afford retina screens for the iPad, but im hoping they make some improvements to the matte 17" to make the colors more vibrant.

Here is why I think there will be NO press conference.

1. Steve is sick. Too sickly to get up on stage and talk, if he does down goes the stock price.
2. If they had a conference someone else would need to speak. Likely a mixture between Scott Forstall, Schiller, Mansfield, and maybe Ives. They are all decent, but none of them are Steve. A conference isn't the same without Jobs, and we don't need more negative PR based on bad-speakers and no sign of Jobs.
3. Apple realized Jobs may be out of the picture soon (god forbid) but it's possible. Apple has no real front-runner to take his place. Sure, Scott has the face for it, but he can't replace Steve right away.

What is my point? Apple knows that conferences without Steve might generate bad PR. So they want to get people used to releases WITHOUT conferences. People have come to expect amazing things from apple every time with a media event.

Come Thursday we will have some new releases, apple will post a video online like they did with the MBA detailing the design changes (if any).

Lightpeak? Before the recent CNET report everyone doubted it. I still think the chances are slim, but anything is possible.

This should be interesting. The Macbook Pros seem to be coming in "undercover" with really no warning as to what it's about.

LightPeak may be coming this year but I think it is highly unlikely that we will see them in these MBP refreshes. We may get SSD standard, we may get a MBA-esque look, and we may even ditch the ODD but no way Apple is the first to market with LightPeak and they don't hold a meeting to gloat about it.

Yep, the more I read about the lackluster implementation of this the more I'm convinced it's nothing spectacular.

Works for me as I won't be retiring my current MB for a new MBP until next summer. (Or I can wait longer).

What hasn't surfaced yet is if there's going to be any change to the current white MacBooks. I'm guessing those will continue to just use the overstock of C2D's Apple still has.

If SJ is well enough to meet the prez for a boring meeting last week he'd be just fine making a public announcement.

Something about the rumored SKUs doesn't make sense - some of the reports mention an MC700 SKU, others have it as MC720. The MC700 wouldn't "fit" with the scheme of the others, implying that it could be related but might not be a CPU.

I keep wondering (hoping) that the 700 SKU might be a host display for the actual MBPs - using an integrated MagSafe/LightPeak connector to convey the IOs and graphics to the display.

I think this is pretty much right on.

Right - Monday or Tuesday announcement of/invites to a press event for Thursday is still believable, but if there's no word by end of day Tuesday, I'd expect this to be a less major revision... but I sure hope I'm wrong for completely selfish reasons.

I'm still holding onto some hope because these packages are sealed under lock and key. Hopefully that means no one gets a peak at a new design and not just seeing a sandy bridge only upgrade. Also the whole MBA thing being "the next generation of MacBooks," really hoping they run with that.

And hopefully there's just no big press announcement because Steve's not there. We'll see soon enough I suppose.

IDK my thinking is that the 700SKU is a replacement for the white Macbook. In the link above, the Russian site, the cheapest Mac has a description as a new line of professional macbook pros or something like that. The other 13" has a 721SKU I believe.

I just want new imacs and minis :) i'm happy with my MBP but am now in the market for a new desktop mac.

Hopefully whatever the MBPs have will give an indiction to whats coming for imacs (lightpeak etc).
