Here is why I think there will be NO press conference.

1. Steve is sick. Too sickly to get up on stage and talk, if he does down goes the stock price.
2. If they had a conference someone else would need to speak. Likely a mixture between Scott Forstall, Schiller, Mansfield, and maybe Ives. They are all decent, but none of them are Steve. A conference isn't the same without Jobs, and we don't need more negative PR based on bad-speakers and no sign of Jobs...

Have to disagree about Ives. Not everyone is cut out for public speaking. Schiller is kind of blank - plus I think Apple watchers would prefer someone from either a software or hardware engineering background. Or even Ives, as bad as his delivery is. That audience wants to hear from the tech people - it's who they identify with, not marketing.

I think that's why Forstall gets so much time on stage these days. He's got the black shirts too.

I hope the pricing changes a bit.

My biggest gripe right now is that for those of us that are very budget-minded, the base-line 13" is the only real option.

Coming from a PC, these are the things that piss me off apple:

1. We need a 14" or 15" model in an affordable price range. $1800 for a base 15" MBP vs $600 for a PC version makes this very tough to swallow. I'm willing to pay some premium for an apple tax, but this is just painful.

2. The upgraded 13" is too expensive. I'm going to be really pissed if the options are:

$1200 - 13", i3, w/ no SSD
$1500 - 13", i5, w/ SSD

I'd almost wager that this is exactly what we'll end up getting.

Basically, I've pretty much decided that the only way I make the switch at this refresh is if I see a machine with the following specs:

MBP 13-14"
i5 sandybridge
128gb SSD
4gb ram
a reasonable video card that can power dual monitors
$1200

Give me that, apple, and I'll convert.

While I sympathize to some extent, step back and take a serious look at what you're getting here. Yes, you can buy a $600 Dell, but I can guarantee you that it's not going to feel anywhere near as solid, will be thicker and heavier, have a case made of cheap, creaky plastic, have considerably worse battery life, and the trackpad is probably some bargain-bin crap that barely works and your fingers stick to. I wouldn't be suprised if that 15" screen had a horrible resolution like 1366x768, rendering the larger size pointless (even BEFORE this upgrade, MacBook Pro 15" screens are 1440x900 and can be upgraded to 1680x1050).

Basically, my point is that cheap laptops are going to look, feel, and act cheap. Raw specs aren't the only things that matter.

Works for me as I won't be retiring my current MB for a new MBP until next summer. (Or I can wait longer).

Well, I'd love to retire my 2007 MBP 15" and replace it with something that's nearly as lightweight as the 13" MBA but has a matte screen, an ethernet port, a kensington lock and a sandy bridge CPU - and hopefully no moving parts besides the fan.

Acer has a $833 13in laptop that can last up to 12hrs with a 9cell battery, 8hrs on the 6 cell.

Ati 6550 (better than the current 330m the 15 MBP uses)
4GB RAM
Core i5
500GB HDD

There is no really good reason that Apple can't have the same specs with a better display than Acer for $999 or $1099. The only difference between the Acer and the Apple would be the metal case and better display.

If Apple can't at least match Acer's specs then I'll be buying the Acer.

Really hope it is what they claim it is..

I trusted my guts and sold my MacBook Pro 13.3" 2.4 2010 - just 3 hours ago... :D

Now I will buy the new one's no matter what, it is just a matter of when they will be out, the sooner the better!!!

I believe that even if it will be only a spec bump, still it will be a significant one, since last update actual was hmm, how to say it nicely - half one, so any slight update in the performance will be significant, especially when it comes to that old C2D cpu.
When I bought the 2010 one I really felt ashame to pay that much for a 5 years technology, but I was hopeless since I needed apple laptop and I had low budget.

Apple please make me correct and satisfied haha :D

So it says that the new MacBook Pro 13' , the cheapest one has intel core i5? :O

That would made my day!

It also says the new 15" has up to 12 hours of battery. Interesting. I was doing some google-fu earlier and found this gem.

EDIT: Also shows a 13" model with model number MC700.

I wonder if they will have an event, it's not good for business if Steve doesn't flaunt his creations. Even if they have someone else do it, it is better than nothing at all. And what else will happen at this event if it happens at all? So many questions ahhhhh

- Nvidia Graphics
- i5 Sandy Bridge
- 12/13hours of battery

We will have a redesign for sure guys.

Hopefully the Sandy Bridge chip's are the correct working ones and not the "half-assed" fixed ones.

I can't wait 'till Tursday :(

Any thoughts on a touch screen? Could be a "soft" release of the hardware in preparation for the release of the next app-focused OS this summer?

I have a big official Apple Store like 2000 meters away from my home.

Will they a) Have the MacBooks in Stock on the 24th (of course just if they get officially realeased on the 24th :))
and b) Do I get one, when I go there in the day? Or are people queuing for MacBook Pros and they only have a small amount of them in their store.

I know, that probably no one can say this exactly, but I hope that some of you already made some experiences and can tell me ;)

Apple doesn't hold a press conference unless there's a very significant tech advance - and that's with or without Steve doing the Keynote. Even the current generation of iMacs was released via press release in late 2009.

I'd say Lightpeak would constitute a media event. I'd say a new version of the iPad would as well. And Apple typically gives a week's notice for such events.

In other words, don't expect anything more than a spec bump and maybe some minor cosmetic changes to the MBP line. And probably a silent bump to the Mac Mini as well. Nothing major.

I do find it odd that we haven't had any sort of media event in 2011 so far. I'm guessing the next one will be in late March/early April with the release of the iPad 2.

The current 17" MBP gets about 8 hours. I'm thinking in order to get another 4 hours of battery life, they'd have to redesign it, like maybe remove the drive and replace it with a bigger battery or so. Oh and also, US Apple site now states a 3-5 day shipping time frame.

i think it has more durability/strength and in black it would look way cooler.

+1 Very true.

Hmm... just two days ago I was in an Apple store. My 2009 MacBook Pro was still having issues... even after a hard drive and logic board replacement. They decided to order me a new 15" i7 2.8 machine. I wonder how I can get them to switch it out to a the new model? They did tell me that it could take up to 10 days before it arrives. Any thoughts?
