As we get closer and closer to the date I am getting less confident in Apple holding an event to launch these. Which says to me that these will not be a redesign, just a spec bump.

I don't think they'd threaten to revoke a reseller license if it was just a CPU bump. This is a redesign.

OH MY GOD!! That has got to be the beautiful thing I have ever seen. If they did this, there is a 100% chance I am going to buy one right away.

Purdy, ain't it?

how will apple know if they oepened them or not? if i was working at wherever they are being shipped too, you can guarantee id open that up, take 100's of pics and sell it to gizmodo, say by-bye to my job, but hello to 20 grand.

And pay a fine of 100 times more back to Apple... Sure, you ever heard of NDA's?

Well they could very well do an event without Steve it might take awhile for Steve to feel well enough to do an public speaking. They obviously have other events that will be happening this summer so they might want to see how the public receives a different speaker incase Steve isn't better by then. I'm also expecting a redesign given that it would be odd to follow the total redesign of the MBA with MBPs that look, well, outdated.

Apple doesn't hold a press conference unless there's a very significant tech advance - and that's with or without Steve doing the Keynote. Even the current generation of iMacs was released via press release in late 2009.

I do find it odd that we haven't had any sort of media event in 2011 so far. I'm guessing the next one will be in late March/early April with the release of the iPad 2.

Apple held a press conference with Tim Cook to announce the iPhone 4 on Verizon...not a very significant tech advance there.

I hope the pricing changes a bit.

My biggest gripe right now is that for those of us that are very budget-minded, the base-line 13" is the only real option.

Coming from a PC, these are the things that piss me off apple:

1. We need a 14" or 15" model in an affordable price range. $1800 for a base 15" MBP vs $600 for a PC version makes this very tough to swallow. I'm willing to pay some premium for an apple tax, but this is just painful.

2. The upgraded 13" is too expensive. I'm going to be really pissed if the options are:

$1200 - 13", i3, w/ no SSD
$1500 - 13", i5, w/ SSD

I'd almost wager that this is exactly what we'll end up getting.

Basically, I've pretty much decided that the only way I make the switch at this refresh is if I see a machine with the following specs:

MBP 13-14"
i5 sandybridge
128gb SSD
4gb ram
a reasonable video card that can power dual monitors
$1200

Give me that, apple, and I'll convert.

Haha! What a cheapo you are. Samsung has their laptop 9 series with i5 prcoessor, 128GB SSD, 2GB ram and 13 inch screen for 1699 dollars. Why are you asking apple to undercut them by 500 dollars?

+1 Very true.

Liquid-metal-vs-aluminum-670x504-550x413.jpg

While a darker aluminum would be pretty rad, it would also show scratches a lot more easily and generally look more beat up after a typical 1st owner service life (3-4 years). My late 06 MBP still looks brand new on the outside.

If the battery life increases on the Russian site are accurate they must have pulled (or have the option of pulling) the optical drive for increased space for battery, GPU or secondary hard drive (or all three?). I personally like the option of having an SSD and secondary drive for data storage. I also like the aluminum versus the black unless the black stayed cooler without compromising the rock-solid feel. Just my two cents.

I am honestly hoping for this (keep in mind thinking of upgraded 13', not the base one)

13"
i5 sandy bridge with 2.5 Ghz or up Quad
nvidia gt 500 m series (i think those are out, read something about it)
optical drive optional so you can get better battery life and dedicated graphics card
high res display

honestly i dont care to much about lightspeak

There is no way the 13 inch is going to get an i5 let alone a quad.
Lightpeak would be fantastic. It's a one stop port for everything.

Actually, many companies already do. Take into account that I am switching from PC to Mac with this Macbook Pro release. But you just cant argue that PC's (both portable and desktop) dont offer more power for the price. With apple you are getting different things for the money. (superior build quality, OSX, great set of included software, etc)

For example:

ASUS G Series G53JW-XN1
Intel i7 740QM (Quad Core)
4GB 1333 DDR3
500GB 7200rpm HD
Nvidia 1.5GB GTX 460M
15.6" LED 1920x1080 display
USB 3.0
USB 2.0
Backlit Keyboard
1 year accidental damage warraty

$1,199.99

You forgot to mention the part where that Asus is nearly 8lbs and likely has a battery life measurable in microseconds... That thing isn't a laptop, it's a kinda-portable-desktop-substitute.

I'd say Lightpeak would constitute a media event. I'd say a new version of the iPad would as well. And Apple typically gives a week's notice for such events.

In other words, don't expect anything more than a spec bump and maybe some minor cosmetic changes to the MBP line. And probably a silent bump to the Mac Mini as well. Nothing major.

I do find it odd that we haven't had any sort of media event in 2011 so far. I'm guessing the next one will be in late March/early April with the release of the iPad 2.

Agreed!

You dont read new stories do you?

It's no the chips that have the problem its the chipsets.

Well excuse me then, I hope the CHIPSETS are fixed.
Because isn't there a chance they could be the messed up ones?
