Sorry Phil, you can keep your overpriced rubbish. This RAM story is such a load of crap. WHY IS IT SO THIN?????!?!? WHY???? WHHHHYYYYY? IS THAT REALLY NECESSARY?!?!?!? Make the battery bigger add a bit more space and problem solved.

Here's a "pro" Mac with 16GB of RAM. What a joke.

I think we'll see it with the next model, just like DDR4. It is a shame for true professionals that use MacBook Pros, but it is the first generation of this design and hopefully those features come in time, along with a price decrease.

The main gripe that I have is the lack of an SD card slot. I understand all ports being Thunderbolt 3, that makes sense to me, but the removal of the SD card slot doesn't.

Performance Per Watt. Remember Jobs introducing the first MacBook Pros? His story was that this time, Apple found a way to keep up performance and maintain battery life. He called it a big step forward and named it the "Pro" (at 1:18:15 sec)

Apple nowadays likes to release new products out of price range with poor performance. That's the same thing like selling the G5 PowerBook.

Bonus: The anouncement of iSight was a big thing at the first MacBook Pro release. A massive hardware update for that time. Jobs didn't took almost an hour to talk about it. He just told us, gave a fun demo and left us exited. That's how a keynote should be. That's why I will always look back Keynotes. To hear Jobs and get that "Apple feeling" again. I'm feeling old...

32GB of RAM is an insane amount of memory.

The Mac Pro supports up to 64GB of memory, so if you're in the market for a powerful Mac, Apple has you covered. It's unrealistic to expect them to pack a Mac Pro into a laptop. Possible, maybe, but at what compromise?
No sense bringing the MacPro's shortcomings into this discussion they're well documented. By the way, MacPros can use 128GB of memory with 3rd party solutions.

Not having more memory capability than my 5 year old MacBook "PRO" (I know it's just marketing gobbledegook), on a laptop that can exceed $4K is what's insane.

Ridiculous and false reasoning. Had they used LPDDR4 instead of LPDDR3 they could have stuck 32GB in that machine at an even lower voltage level.

EDIT:// Also Samsung is selling LPDD4x a new off-shoot which goes down to 0.6v (compared to 1.2v of LPDDR3 and 1.1v of LPDDR4). They definitely could have got some from Samsung but chose not to.

The CPU used in these computers supports both DDR3 and DDR4 and the Samsung LPDDR4x is materially identical to LPDDR4 in compatibility, it just lowers I/O voltage.
What doesn't make sense to me is why Apple would miss the opportunity to charge $400 for another 16 GB of RAM (even though I was able to upgrade my iMac to 32 GB 2133 MHz for half that amount). Hmm...

care to detail the 3rd party solutions tha tmagically expand the RAM capabilities of a Soldered on 16gb RAM machine?

or did you confuse RAM for storage?

I may be forced to buy the damn thing' as my 12-inch MB keyboard requires service often due to the poor design. The Apple Store tech said the butterfly keyboards are more sensitive to dust. According to yesterday's' release, they said something to the effect, the new MBP has the next gen keyboard version. It seems the announcement had more to do with that silly 'touch bar' than anything else. I would rather have the option for 32gb of RAM than a 2TB SSD.

I'm really surprised by the amount of feeble excuses Phil and Craig are bandying about in the last 24 hours.
The vitriolic response from MR users to this MBP release has been something else. Alienating your core market is really not good.

Good answer. 99% of all users value battery life over masses of unnecessary RAM that macOS really doesn't need. I'm glad Apple remains focused on the important things.
LOLOLOL. Thanks, I needed that.

Hey Ford, why don't you have an 6.2 litre engine or 4 wheel drive in the F150?
Well that’s because we don’t want you to suffer crappy mileage or be tempted to drive off road as most users that buy a utility vehicle don't need utility.
Yeah but you know I can also buy the 2.7 litre 2 wheel drive if I needed to right, the 6-2 is just an option.

Could you imagine them saying that?

The funny part of this conversation is how many people think they "need" 32GB of RAM... but are probably really only needing 8GB.

I need 32 GB of RAM

Funny how some people thought that 640k was enough RAM for anyone.

Please try to understand that some / most pro users like / want / need to use 32 GB or more of RAM.

Your iPhone has more RAM than you can imagine was ever necessary in a PowerMac G4.

And don't forget most buyers of this MacBook (Pro) will take them into 2020 with this machine (you cannot upgrade RAM). By then 16 GB will be probably minimal for macOS 10.16 ("Rocky".. you heard it here first).

Let people decide for themselves. Apple should offer 32GB, if that decreases the battery life - so what.

Secondly, this is a forum, allow people to speak their mind, whatever that may be.

Mainly moaning like they know better, when they don't - even Google and Microsoft don't - so armchair CEO's on a forum definitely don't.

People have been making this moan on this very forum every single day since the first iPod was released - and in that time Apple has grown to be the biggest tech company in the world.

But you know, everyone on this forum definitely knows better.
This is not the creation of a world-changing category. This is not the Apple Car.

It's true that people with limited vision have been whining about things that Apple *created* since the beginning of time -- since way before the iPod. But only because they didn't get how great those things could be.

Here, on the other hand, Apple is attempting to neuter and render obsolete THE COMPUTER.

Say that sentence to yourself out loud. Holy ****!

The MBP was the last of their professional-grade machines and they just took it away from the people who depend on it for their livelihoods. From the small group of dedicated, almost cult-like group of contrarians who steadfastly stood against the world because they had found something truly better.

They also just told their entire amateur enthusiast base to **** their hats.

What on earth are they going to do inside their billion dollar spaceship building; just sit around picking new pastel colours for iPads? Try to figure out why people aren't buying many tablets or watches anymore?

This is hard to watch.

The most I run my 2012 MBP on batteries and only because I am to lazy to drag the power adapter with me is in a conference room meeting that might last 2 hours. I fly close to 200,000 miles a year and most airports have power outlets all over the place now. Plus any plane flying more then a hour or two has power in the seat even in coach.

The assumption that a majority of their customers want longer battery life over more ram is flawed.

They totally screwed up when they made a decision for their users like me who could care less about battery life and just want to have a powerful laptop with them no matter where they are and will be plugged in 95% or more of the time of it's use.

Idiots!

It says "MacPro", does it not Lord Vic? go to OWC.

To mistake RAM for storage would be a mistake of Royal proportions.

I don't buy machines with soldered storage.
