Ridiculous and false reasoning. Had they used LPDDR4 instead of LPDDR3 they could have stuck 32GB in that machine at an even lower voltage level.

EDIT:// Also Samsung is selling LPDD4x a new off-shoot which goes down to 0.6v (compared to 1.2v of LPDDR3 and 1.1v of LPDDR4). They definitely could have got some from Samsung but chose not to.

The CPU used in these computers supports both DDR3 and DDR4 and the Samsung LPDDR4x is materially identical to LPDDR4 in compatibility, it just lowers I/O voltage.

Doesn't DDR4 increase latency? At least that is my takeaway from some reading.

Make a 17" version. There's your extra space for larger battery, negating the concerns of 32GB option.

Giving that 17" an option not available in the smaller ones should also have a positive effect on its sales. Then again, screen would be bigger, using more power.

I suppose it's feasible that the technology just isn't quite there yet for them to be able to do something like that without making sacrifices they are not willing to do at this time.

The issue at hand is not "you should be using a desktop" - because 4 years ago, a laptop was fast enough that my 3.33 12-core 64gb monster machine for audio sat idle for all my projects except full-orchestration mockup work.

I was hoping for like, some frickin' advance in the last 4 years. This thing may have a faster cpu and video, but that's pretty much it. 32 gigs would have had me pressing the 'buy' button yesterday.

Anyone calling this garbage because this laptop doesn't support an astronomically large amount of RAM is just making noise. The Mac Pro supports up to 64GB of memory, so if you're in the market for a powerful Mac, Apple has you covered. It's unrealistic to expect them to pack a Mac Pro into a laptop. Possible, maybe, but at what compromise?

If you are willing to plug in to use 32GB of memory, then buy a Mac Pro with 32GB or 64GB of memory. Then have a MacBook Pro when you're on the road. Apple is giving you options. People are just filtering the truth to make an argument.

Oh yeah no bother - so after spending 2.5K on the MBP you want me to spend another 4k+ on a mac pro. Oh yeah sure no bother. OR.....I could buy a Dell for 2.5K that has the 32GB RAM. Yeah thats right - Dell can pack that into a laptop - with 4K display. and Edge-to-edge display - and a mixture of ports!!! And it looks good!

Also - sometimes when travelling I might be away for a week, or maybe a month. My work that needs the 32GB shoudl just wait till I get home according to your rules ?

such a missed opportunity by apple to make the BTO 32GB option available.. and push the price to $5000 !

Yeah have you seen the price of the 2Tb SSD version ?

I can see it now, Dell, HP, and other Windows laptop makers saying come to us, we have 32GB and 64GB options.

Apple is so obsessed with eliminating ports and making products thinner they have gone too far.

Paging wouldn't be an issue if the PCIe SSD could read/write at rates like 10GB/s. It would be slower than RAM, but fast enough to live with. However, intensive paging can reduce the SSD lifetime, like in scientific applications in which the programmer designs app and data for taking all the available RAM aiming to generate better statistics.

I think there should be a Macbook Sci: heavier, less battery life, but with CPU and dGPU with lots of memory.

Once again Apple's unhealthy obsession with slimming down every product they have is effecting their customer's performance and user experience. Why didn't they just leave it the same thickness? It's a professional-grade laptop. It's not supposed to be ultra portable. I think someone at Apple has an eating disorder or cacomorphobia.;)

Welp someday they might make a computer that can drive a 4k/5k display natively at 60 Hz that also comes with 32 GB RAM.

Guess that day is not today. Won't be tomorrow, either. By the time they do build that, there will be better benchmarks to aim for that Apple will fall short to deliver on.

They didn't put more memory in, because they want us to buy another machine in 2 years. That's how planned obsolescence works. After 2 more OS-es, 16GB will be the minimum requirement. It's 8GB now, if you actually want to use that computer, and not just look at the desktop.

The real reason is probably that RAM will be what forces buyers of this laptop to upgrade earlier than they would otherwise.
If you say so, my reason to upgrade from a 2010 MBP would be weight, thickness and screen resolution. Only reason not to buy a 2016 MBP for me is price and maybe the butterfly keys. The rest is fine to excellent.

People have been making this moan on this very forum every single day since the first iPod was released - and in that time Apple has grown to be the biggest tech company in the world.

But you know, everyone on this forum definitely knows better.

Right, and just prior to their iPod-linked resurgence, they were circling the drain because of slow Mac sales.

They've come full circle.

The RAM in the memory slots isn't all that needs to be changed... likely it would result in different architecture changes (possibly a different version of the processor?) and thus would be a different product from the <=16 GB version. This is very common across all laptop manufacturers (most of which offer 32 GB under in their high end engineering versions, if they even offer those.) Had they thought there was enough demand to make this other model, I'm sure they would have ..

The chip supports DDR4. They chose DDR3 because it is cheaper.

Looks like I am sticking to 2012 rMBP for now. Was really hoping for 32GB RAM, although it ticks all other boxes but can't justify £3300 for a laptop....

I agree. While many of my other boxes got checked off (larger SSD support being important) I'm not sure I want to invest in a machine that will only support 16GB over the next 4 years of my use. Very disappointed in Apple that they did all of this wonderful work and decided to not support more memory.

I could care less about weight or thinness at this point. My 2012 is light and thin enough. I care more about performance and features. Not leaving a single USB3 port and not adding a lightning port is simply annoying.

Apple isn't stupid however...which makes me wonder, if the iPhone Lightning port the next thing to be removed for the iPhone 8?
