For me, regardless of the battery life, I usually run at max brightness with heavily intensive CPU tasks running nonstop. All day battery life means nothing to me. Regardless of what they say, I'm going to be running out of juice within 2-3 hours anyways.

Well Folks, I know this is no big contribution to the conversation, however I just take the chance to voice how much I was disappointed about the release. It's a rant, take it for that and accept my apologies in advance.

I was pretty much in the market for two MBPs yet the pricing is just beyond good and evil. It's a no-go, and even more so when related to the innovation (or lack of it) that it brings to the market.

There is actually no notebook the fits cost/benefit. Not even something cool to have and to show off, so not really with any justifiable apple tax.

What's worst, however, is how much out of touch Apple execs are. In order to show off the newest brightest and shiniest MBP they had to compare it to a 25 year old, first gen, laptop. I wanted to die that very moment. As an apple exec I would be ashamed of.

Sorry Apple, wrong way IMHO.

(And yes, I am afraid that the signals will be misinterpreted and Apple will put decreasing effort in the mac line. So start marking the EOL in a couple of years.)

/rant finished

Don't make the freaking machine so thin... allow a slighter larger battery!

Another consequence of Apple compromising functionality over Form.
Well I am ok with the battery life, I like it as thin as possible for transport.

Guys, let us vote with our wallets and not buy this garbage. I for one, will look elsewhere.
Thanks, less waiting time for me!

...as they reduced the battery capacity of the new machines.

apparently they thought the thickness of the already thin retina macbook pro was more of an issue than being stuck with the same ram capacity as 6 years ago.

honestly yes, i can continue to make do a bit longer without the extra ram. but in the same vein i can also make do without an emoji selector strip above my keyboard. especially for $3000.

I'm so glad I maxed out the specs on my rMBP 2 years ago. It's hard sitting out some product refreshes, but my performance is still adequate. Maybe next year, or next ye.....

The computer and OS divisions need to be spun off into their own company. The Clown-ocracy of Cook, Ive and Ferengi want Apple out of the computer business and are active trying to KILL the Mac side of the company. It's so obvious in every choice they make.
Let those guys have the IOS world, and hire some folks for the Mac spin off company who understand the meaning of the word "Pro"

Time to drop "Pro" from the name.

Actual Pro's don't care about maximum thinness. Battery is secondary. We also won't use the Magic Toolbar from day to day since we're using external displays and keyboards.

To which I would reply - your use case is better suited to a desktop.
But then Apple clearly has no interest in offering updated Mac Pros or Mac minis - their only contemporary offering is the all-in-one iMac?
Their logic is really hard to accept...

If you are a pro and you go to a clients office you will plug it into a power outlet if you have to work there 8 hours.

If I go into an office and choose to run on battery power does that make me not a "pro?"

Such a silly label...

I think of the following reasons:

1. They probably want to maintain their claim for battery life by limiting ram so that people wont be able to multitask (not actually hardware problem)

2. They want to have some future selling points

3. To keep the profit margin high -- low end high price = high profit.

They're publicely traded company after all..

Phil Shiller is one of the biggest bull *******s on the planet ...
1. "we did not design the new macbook pro for price, we did for the experience"
2. "32GB causes battery life issues"

Everthing apple does is for maximum profit first and any other reason second.

Dear Phil.

Someone at Apple HQ needs to be slapped in the face with a horse. The high end MBP isn't destined to people who are facebooking or spreadsheeting, but pros who are rendering 4K videos, compositing layers and layers of images, mixing dozens or hundreds of audio tracks with real-time effects. And they NEED memory to render that stuff faster.

They will not be angry at you because "OH MY GOD ! THE 32gb 15"MBP is 2 MILLIMETERS FATTER THAN THE 13" MBP BECAUSE OF THE BATTERY ! I CANNOT WORK WITH A FAT MACHINE ! "
But I understand that Paris Hilton will be angry at you because there is no way she'll be tweeting emojis from the Touch Bar if the MBP is 2mm too thick.

And I think Paris Hilton is the kind of client you want for this machine, not audio/video pros.

Schiller's reply is fine, as long as they remove the "Pro" from the series name! Or is this aimed at *pro* internet browsing?

There are a couple windows laptops with 64 gb ram.

I anticipated 32, with outside hope of a build to order 64. Perhaps Im in a small group. 32 gb in an iMac is a challenge when one is using pro apps such as AE, FC, 3d programs. My 2010 Mac Pro has 128, and despite its age is still a daily workhorse. I guess its time to consider moving over to windows hardware, and by that I don't mean Microsofts latest Studio series.

Damn. Its been a nice ride Apple.

Maybe you should look for a desktop then? I can see no fault in designing a mobile computer for battery life.
You know what also reduces battery life? Faster clocked processors and Faster GPUs (and discrete gpus in general). But Apple included those options because some customers are okay with a minor decrease in battery life for usability. Same should apply to RAM.

The real reason is probably that RAM will be what forces buyers of this laptop to upgrade earlier than they would otherwise.

I smell a load of BS from a marketing guy. DDR4 comes in at a better price point than lpDDR3 at 2133.

Here is what wikipedia has to say:
"
On March 14, 2012, JEDEC hosted a conference to explore how future mobile device requirements will drive upcoming standards like LPDDR4.[14] On December 30, 2013, Samsung announced that it has developed the first 20 nm-class 8 gigabit (1 GB) LPDDR4 capable of transmitting data at 3,200 Mbit/s per pin, thus providing 50 percent higher performance than the fastest LPDDR3 and consuming around 40 percent less energy at 1.1 volts.[15]
