Good answer. 99% of all users value battery life over masses of unnecessary RAM that macOS really doesn't need. I'm glad Apple remains focused on the important things.

It's called a BTO option, not as a standard. /facepalm

Why ignore the "1%" that actually has the cash to spend to further raise Apple's profit margins.
They get a pretty penny gouging on the SSDs, as is.

Where do people even find Apple employees e-mails? What is Phil Schiller's and Time Cook's e-mail?

Ridiculous and false reasoning. Had they used LPDDR4 instead of LPDDR3 they could have stuck 32GB in that machine at an even lower voltage level.

EDIT:// Also Samsung is selling LPDD4x a new off-shoot which goes down to 0.6v (compared to 1.2v of LPDDR3 and 1.1v of LPDDR4). They definitely could have got some from Samsung but chose not to.

The CPU used in these computers supports both DDR3 and DDR4 and the Samsung LPDDR4x is materially identical to LPDDR4 in compatibility, it just lowers I/O voltage.

Great post (if true, I have no idea) and people should ask these questions and not stupid/predictable ones like MKBHD did when he talked to Craig. None of these journalists even dares to be a little critical towards Apple.

How many people have an existing laptop with 32GB of RAM? Just wondering. From the amount of complaints, sounds like majority here have existing laptops with 32GB of RAM, and thus looking for a new laptop with the same feature.

Here, on the other hand, Apple is attempting to neuter and render obsolete THE COMPUTER.

Say that sentence to yourself out loud. Holy ****!

The MBP was the last of their professional-grade machines and they just took it away from the people who depend on it for their livelihoods. From the small group of dedicated, almost cult-like group of contrarians who steadfastly stood against the world because they had found something truly better.

Wow and they say Apple's marketing speak is elaborately over the top hahaha.

Another consequence of Apple compromising functionality over Form.

Apple has always tried to balance form and functionality - sometimes it leans a little more to functionality and sometimes to form but overall Apple's philosophy to date is to have form drive. This is a continuation of Steve Jobs's vision for computers.

Most of us want smaller, lighter, better screens and longer battery life. The new Macs are pretty good at that, so I'm buying.

Mac Pros are aimed at prosumer customers, not hard-core IT professionals. That's a marketing choice that seems to work for Apple. Witness the demand for these new machines that is overrunning their early supply and production capacity.

If you want heavy iron, get something big that runs Windows.

I think the smaller lighter better screens should be fulfilled with the MacBook/Macbook Air.

Here's an idea: take all this new 2016 MBP technology & provide an option to put it in the 2012 MBP Unibody case! You could add all the ports back in & increase the size the battery! Plus with the Unibody case, we could upgrade RAM & HD ourselves if we wanted to. Who would buy that if given a choice?

A good hint to not buy the 13 inch version with i7. It will most likely have a poor battery performance, specially with a 49 WHr battery.

Same thing with journalists at the White House. You get critical, you're not being invited to future events, you can no longer post everything "first" since the consumers (us) only want to watch/see/read those "first" posters.

Do you really not think that they examined the possibilities of LPDDR4? The first MBPr was one of the first machines to ever utilize LPDDR3, Apple has vendors pushing them to use these technologies, they're not lying or being ridiculous.

I agree. While many of my other boxes got checked off (larger SSD support being important) I'm not sure I want to invest in a machine that will only support 16GB over the next 4 years of my use. Very disappointed in Apple that they did all of this wonderful work and decided to not support more memory.

I could care less about weight or thinness at this point. My 2012 is light and thin enough. I care more about performance and features. Not leaving a single USB3 port and not adding a lightning port is simply annoying.

Apple isn't stupid however...which makes me wonder, if the iPhone Lightning port the next thing to be removed for the iPhone 8?

was just looking at the store too.

The only way to get the quad core is also going 15" version as neither 13" models offer Quad Core CPU (which IMHO makes them more MacBook Airs than MacBook Pros)

And the 15" Quad-Core base price is $2999.99 Canadian. That's a lot. For $3,000 Canadian, there are a lot of options at that price for high end powerful laptops. Many offering far more functionality / features.

care to detail the 3rd party solutions tha tmagically expand the RAM capabilities of a Soldered on 16gb RAM machine?

or did you confuse RAM for storage?
Ram and storage are BOTH soldered on. Apple has purposely engineered OUT the ability to upgrade your hardware. Making the 16GB limit all the more egregious and insulting.

I render Maya 3D projects in 4k.... DON'T tell me how much RAM i need. If Apple wants out of the computer business fine.... but don't insult me by defining what "Pro" needs are based on how thin it must be. Ferengi has no concept of what a Pro user needs. OR.... he DOES have a concept and he's purposely driving us away.

Really? Do you know many pro users are rendering 3D, movies, batch photo processing? Do you know many devs are using virtual machines and docker containers now?
These pro models are not for surfing the internet with safari and reading twitter.

I think it's fair to assume that as a percentage of overall MBP users, your examples make up a far smaller group than you believe. Guess what? Not every profession person on earth does development and rendering, and you're not more important than ALL the hundreds of other professions that you condescendingly look down your nose at and accuse of surfing the web and being on Twitter.

The funny part of this conversation is how many people think they "need" 32GB of RAM... but are probably really only needing 8GB.

True but I also don't need a sport car that will do 180 mph, but I would like to have the option to buy what I want even if I'm never going to use it.
