Cue the haters....
This has nothing to do with dongles, so let's stop that discussion right now.

Thunderbolt 3 combines PCI Express and DisplayPort protocols into a single signal in addition to power. Its extremely versatile. Just like not all wireless headphones are up to 4.2 BT specs, I'm sure not all T3 peripherals are created equal as well.

Apple is being Apple, and that means outrageously priced stuff with hard to swallow limitations. I think folks forget that this is really been Apple's MO for decades. Either buy their stuff or don't, but stop complaining about something you have no control over.

Versatile? Article seems to suggest otherwise.

I say follow your own advise, since you have no control over who complains about what.

All these dongles are NOT going to help newcomers at ALL. There are too many dongles and these elders and young people who are interested in any APPLE products would be "discouraged."

Why would Apple push out a firmware update? They are good with people moving forward and just buying the updated hardware.

I'm sure glad I didn't jump on the buy-now-and-beat-the-rush bandwagon. There's so much negative news trickling out about this new MBP, I'm probably going to make do with my three y/o MBP for another year. Who knows what else is going to pop up when pro users actually get the Touch Bar models in their hot little hands.

I'm a really loyal apple fan, but I'm also a rational person. For the first time, I hopelessly fell apple really messed up this round of release. I think apple's problem is getting unmanageable.

Tim can be a great COO and a VP of supply chain, but he is not and he will never become the brain and heart of Apple.

What apple needs is not time, not patient from customers, not fancy marketing, but a visionary who is competent enough to envision and guide Apple in next 50 years. Someone who can sell products in simple plain paper envelopes. Someone who can define the future of computing while presenting products that seamlessly transitions from the past industry standards. Someone who lust engineering perfection in products while understanding business economics. Someone who is a system builder that integrates all the service and products within the Ecosystem to provide an ease of mind for customers (starting by allowing iPhones to be plugged into Macbooks, Apple ear pods to be plugged into Macs, Mac standard USB-c to be plugged into IOS devices). Someone who leads, someone who creates, someone who can be the center of Apple - the Apple core, just like Steve.

Apple's outcome today was theorized by Steve decades ago. You can skip to 25:44s to see Steve's explanation of the fall of a great company or watch the entire interview. Link is here ---https://youtu.be/TRZAJY23xio?t=25m44s

My deepest condolences to Apple - once a miracle of greatness, no longer.

So the 2016 MacBook Pros are not even compatible with Thunderbolt 3 devices that are out there? This is turning out to be a complete disaster.

I'm really skeptical about what Plugable has chosen to say...

Apple has chosen to prevent Thunderbolt 3 devices using currently available controller chips from Texas Instruments from enumerating and functioning on the 2016 MacBook Pros.

What is with the wording "chosen to prevent"? Why would Apple make such a choice? What about suspecting that maybe TI's chipset fails to fully adhere to the Thunderbolt 3 standard? Maybe a firmware update to the MacBook Pros can accommodate the earlier TI chipsets?

They said it themselves...

Our Flagship TBT3-UDV dock with Power Delivery/Charging is using the next generation controller chip from TI, and will be compatible with the 2016 Thunderbolt 3 MacBooks.

So TI changed something for their "next generation" chips and those are magically compatible with the MacBook Pros, so what's different from the first-generation? Sounds to me like this is where the problem is, not with the MacBook Pros. I can't imagine that Apple failed to test even a single Thunderbolt 3 device that's currently available.

1k saved? so you are going to pay like 2500$ for outdated tech? i'm not sure this is such a good deal..

You'll likely find a stock, 2015 top model for under $2k sometime soon. One of the upcoming sales. I remember buying my 2014 right after the 2015 came out for only $1800. I sold it for $1700 thinking the new MBP would be a must have....

Thought over the weekend. Ordered a 15" maxed with 1tb. Canceled today. F it. Going to a maxed 2015.
That will last me 3 years at least.

Saved 1k so far in my search to buy one anyway.

Might even look at the 2014, save more and not get the trackpad that feels like poop. Lesser graphics but even lesser price.

Is this a case of evolving TB3 standards? A similar issue came up with USB-C since the standard hadn't been finalized in 2015 when Apple released the 12" MacBook. Some chargers that work in the 2015 model don't work for the 2016 model.

How about the most pre-orders of a MacBook Pro ever?
Because pre-orders were ever a thing before now? Going back to my first MacBook, a 2009 Core 2 Duo, this is the first time I can recall a Mac not being available for immediate purchase the day it was announced, aside from the redesigned imac's a couple years back due to production issues with the display panels that turned up at the last minute on the 27" model. Phil's exact words were "most ONLINE ordered Mac ever," which means nothing as that is ONLY way one can order the new MBP w/ Touch Bar at this point. Meanwhile, the world clearly isn't impressed as AAPL continues to drop like a stone.
