Why do you think that what YOU want is what everyone else wants? Am I speaking Greek? Jesus H man... most people dont care about games. Most people that I know who switched from Windows just wanted internet, email, music, pictures, and to not have to worry about viruses. Please re-read the previous sentence until you actually understand it because Im getting tired of repeating myself.

I could ask you the same question, though. And if you think "most people" don't care about games, I guess you have a hard time understanding why stores can't keep things like the Wii on the shelves they sell out so fast.

By your logic, this Dual 553MHz G4 I picked up used earlier this year (which ironically I use mostly for the things you mention above) was a fantastic buy at $260 because it does everything a $2400 MacPro does (relatively speaking) if those things are the ONLY things I care about. I mean how much processing power do you need to do word processing, email and browsing? The iPhone can do those things even! This Mac "just works" and is using the latest Tiger OS. Heck, why should anyone buy NEW Macs if they can get a used one for a C-spot or two since CPU and GPU power don't matter?

Clearly, some of us have higher aspirations for our Macs than you do. I want to ALSO run Logic Pro, play 3D games and develop my own 3D pinball games (under XP via Parallels or Fusion). I need actual CPU and GPU power. You don't. I get it. You don't represent "most people" any more than I do. We all have different needs. Most people that buy new computers clearly feel they need BETTER hardware. Apple updates pretty much everything BUT graphics in their computers and that's what doesn't make sense to some of us (clearly some don't care and you're in that boat.) But the rest of us are forced to look at and consider non-Apple hardware because of Apple's poor decisions regarding graphics hardware.

The days of dedicated GPU on a low-end Mac are over. As of Intel-era, there will not be a dedicated GPU on anything but PRO line of computers. Integrated chip may evolve over time, but graphics on a non-pro Mac will continue to suck.

What I can't believe is how short-sighted that decision is. It's almost like Steve Jobs woke up one day and decided he doesn't want the Mac to EVER have more than a 5-8% market share and so purposely limits the consumer line so that the average user will go to Dell instead. A friend of mine just bought a $700 mini-tower from Dell and tells me it will run just about ANYTHING out there in PC land. What do you get for $700 in Mac Land? A Mac-Mini that can't run games made last year properly, let alone something in the store next year.

And then we have the near rabid fan-boys screaming on here about how 'most people' don't care about or need anything better so long as their computer boots up and has no viruses on it.

Personally, I just don't get it. Why doesn't Apple/Steve aim to be the BEST darn computer company out there and put out the best darn hardware for the buck instead of giving you extra options many PCs don't have like Firewire 400 (which most people don't need/want) instead of a decent GPU which then leads to the fanboys touting how 'high end' "all" Macs are compared to similar priced PCs...except for the glaring lack of a decent GPU. It REALLY doesn't make sense when you consider Santa Rosa doesn't cost any more than the boards they're using. They're selling OUTDATED hardware and telling people how GREAT it is. That's just bad business and it's going to start giving the Mac a bad reputation again, IMO. What good does it do to swich to Intel architecture if you're going to put hardware in there that would almost make a two year old G5 competitive?

Mac should mean QUALITY, not just mean it "works". My Vic20 worked too. that doesn't mean I want to use it today.

Now what all this patent nonsense has to do with the fact that some of us want something better than a completely outdated Intel GMA 950 in the next Macbook update is really starting to get waaaay out in left field.

think I have to agree. I don't mind intergrated graphics but the GMA 950 is a joke. If I my a computer I want it to last around 18months, and then after that I can put up with it being a bit slow etc, also my Mini struggles with 720p, it is a core solo, but its got 2GB of RAM. Surely that something to do with the graphics are being crap.

If they put X3100 and SR in the macbooks i'll buy one in november.

Decoding video would be CPU bound for you and it's the Core Solo.

I'll buy a MacBook if it goes Santa Rosa as well.

Welps, this Thursday is the last day I can return my new MacBook..

I can't decide whether or not to return it and wait for the refresh of MacBooks and pay the same price for one of those. I got to test drive this unit for nearly 2 weeks now and i'm dead set on owning one.. I just feel like I waited too late to pick one up.. I don't mind paying the $139 restocking fee.. It was worth using the unit in the meantime.

I just wish Apple would just tell us their projected date on the refresh.

Sigh.. Decisions decisions.

Well even if they didn't refresh the line you'd only be $10(maybe $20) down. Because you'd get Leopard for free (perhaps $10 p&p). And if they refreshed the line you'd get a better computer.

If they put X3100 and Santa Rosa in a MacBook, I'll buy one.

If they put X3100 and Santa Rosa in a MacMini, I'll buy three or four.

I'm not holding my breath for either one. It doesn't make sense to me to leave Santa Rosa out of the MacBook, but that's what the rumors are saying. (The rumors are saying the MacMini is dead.)

This is true.. it's almost worth just taking it back to save the ~$20 on Leopard by buying another MacBook ;) But i'll just return it and wait for the refresh methinks.

I'm waiting till Jan even if they do drop with both.

1. Possible MBP update in 2008.
2. Refurbs should be good to go by then.
3. All of those who bought the MB upon release would have found all the problems with it already ;)

How long can you hold a MacBook and then return for full refund? I mean... I've been waiting for Leopard to get my new MB for a (too) LONG time. It seems now Leopard's going to be released on the 26th. I'd be so pissed to buy my MB that time and then the new hardware upgrade is released in November. I really hope Apple announce the release date for the new MB on the day when they release Leopard...

Like, wow man. I mean like, it's just totally rad man that I mean I JUST bought a Mac in January, and man and it was like soooo cool and far out. But now I want my money back.

I heard though the vine that like, like, like wow man. I got the vibes that like that McDude Jobs guy is like coming out with like a new one, man. So like dig this Mr. Robusto - like I called them on the TELEphone, dig? I said, I said like this I said:

"I bought a real rad Mac like just a few months ago, then I bought one in January, then I bought one in 2005 too dude. Like, I want my money back and 13 new Macs right away cause, like cause, cause ok?"

I will sue you with some of those lawyer guys too dude, and another thing...

Hey! Surfs up! Nevermind!

I'm confused... I think he was justasking me how long do you get to return your Mac for a full refund.. 14 days is the return policy.. If the box is open, you pay 10% restocking fee.. If it's still brand new, full refund back.

No, I think you're missing the point. I'm saying you using words like "most people" based on your six Mac friends is a pretty limited view of the world. Mac users represent 5-8% of the World's computer users so how can you *EVER* under ANY circumstance use the words "most people" when referring to a statement based on 6 existing Mac users that don't even know what kind of hardware they bought and admittedly don't even care so long as it "just works" ??? I'm saying that's not a reasonable, let alone a valid statement.

"Most people" DO care what they're buying is what I'm saying. Now I could go ask 6 PC users I know or even 6 Linux users I know whether they know what's in their computer, whether they plan to upgrade anything in it and whether gaming or 3D applications are important to them and I'm sure depending on WHICH 6 I ask, I'll get 6 different answers because I know more than 6 computer users and certainly a lot more that have PCs than Macs and most of them DO know what's under the hood of their PC.

I'm so glad you cleared that up and why Macs don't have any "techy admin stuff" to do on them compared to PCs.

The thing is IF that were true, then 94% of the world would be using Macs, not PCs. The fact that 94% of the world uses Windows tells me "most people" do apparently want to worry about technical complexities, virues, etc. because they DO buy them and DO use them (or feel they are forced to since that's where the software is or in some of our cases, where the hardware that we want is). I'm not saying we wouldn't all be be better off with MacOSX compared to Windows (I do much prefer MacOSX personally), but rather it's a fact of life that MacOSX is a niche product tied directly to hardware by Apple's choosing which further limits it. It might even be 25% or more of the market right now if Apple didn't force you to buy their hardware to get their OS. But that's another matter.

Now what all this patent nonsense has to do with the fact that some of us want something better than a completely outdated Intel GMA 950 in the next Macbook update is really starting to get waaaay out in left field. Whether a person knows what it's in their Macbook is beside the point if they decide to run Madden 2008 and it refuses to run because the GPU isn't supported. Maybe one of those 'Sad Mac' faces would be a good way to break it to your six friends so they can comprehend why it won't run since they know not what is in their computer?

You are SO technically biased that you totally miss the point. 99% of computer users (both on the mac AND win side) are not technical and do not care what hardware they have. And yes, a G4 would work well in most situations for the majority of people out there but, again... Apple no longer sells those and most people dont buy used hardware. I just gave my mother the G3 in my sig and guess what? She loves it. One of my aunts is using a 700Mghz dell and has no need for anything newer. My uncle.. same thing.. my cousin, some of my friends, etc etc etc.... dont need high end stuff. That sir, is the majority of the user base for both Windows and OS X. And yes, I have friends that have high end rigs, and want the latest and greatest, but they are the minority.

The reason why Windows sells so well is NOT because people want to be sys admins and worry about viruses. Its because its all they know, they are sold in every retail store, and they are ignorant about Macs.

I just bought my MacBook in may of '07. I don't want Apple to upgrade it just yet. At least wait until January (or never)

My MacBook is still a newborn :(

Prof. :apple:

With the format wars not being completely over I highly doubt they will put any other drive than a DVD burner.

The home user is asking more questions to friends, family and retail staff about computers. The home user is getting more clued up about computer specs.

My sister was looking for a computer she doesn't really understand about computer specs. I would say that she is very typical of most home computer users. When she wanted to buy a new desktop she called me to ask about the different specs and what she should buy. People are wanting to buy what they think is the best bang for their buck and something that will be capable of doing the job that they need for the next few years.

yea I"m glad to see the general population at least care about such things... way back when i remember kids in my high school boasting how many ghz their computer was, as if that was the only circumstance that determines performance.

Just tell me where you get your technical figures (the 99% bit) from (cite your sources) and I'll gladly leave it be. What study shows that 99% of people don't upgrade or buy new computers because they believe their current computer is good enough based on having NO knowledge about what's inside it? Sorry, but I have to call the BS card on this one.

Since Leopard was "officially" announced to be coming on the 26th, do you guys still expect a MB update? I would've thought that any update to the MB would have been also announced the same day?

In the past have they made a big deal of updating the MB, like in a press conference or do they just show up on the online store one day?
