GPU also helps those in the creative field of design / motion graphics / 3d.

I for one would love an overhaul on the GPU... for the creative purposes foremost, and of course the gaming on bootcamp :p

Yup, it's not just games you know. 3D Designing, video editing, etc. would run better if the GPU was upgraded. Ofc it's a combination of factors but GPU is an important part of a designer's mac.

so here we are.... still 4 days to go before Leopard is released..
but man, what I'm really looking forward to is an upgraded MB!!! :) man I've been waiting for months now to buy my first Mac! (wanted to wait for Leopard).

For me SR and updated graphics is enough to buy them. Alu cases is cool, but I must admit that I also like the plastic look!

I have been reading lots of forums for months now...there's more and more doubt for me that they will be announced this friday! I guess 6th November is good chance indeed... well I hope. Please :apple: dudes, make my wish come true ;)

little question: how many days/weeks before does apple normally announce a keynote or event for an hardware updates like this?

I'm in exactly the same boat. I’ve been on the verge of buying my first Mac for years, but there always seems to be something else around the corner. I finally decided to buy one once Leopard came out, but as I'm looking for a MacBook, I’m now wondering if I should hold off a few weeks to see if there’s any announcement about updated MacBooks.

For what it’s worth, in my case, Apple’s secrecy has stopped me from buying a Mac in the past – Not because of the secrecy itself, but because there are always rumors flying around, so you never know if it’s the right time to buy. If they came out now and said “Okay, new MacBooks with x, y & z will be coming out in January”, then I’d just bite the bullet and buy one now (assuming that x, y & z were minor improvements such as a slightly faster CPU, or a different case style or something).

My problem is that I don’t need a Mac at all, I just want one to play with. To be honest, I’m happy with my current Vista laptop and desktop, and will still have to use Vista as my primary machine because of Exchange access and the like. Because a Mac, for me, it just for fun, I’ve been waiting for the right time to get one since they announced the switch to Intel.

Same here! well, in my case I never had a notebook before, but I'm a java developer and heard from different people (collegues and forums) that the macbook is a nice java dev machine!

I have always been very interested in linux, but now I found it's time to try something else! Reliable, no virusses, no more configuration probs (I had my share with al the linux distro's I tried ;) ).. I just want a machine that works! A machine on which I don't need to spend hours configuring and updating antispyware/antivirus programs. A machine to to some development, play some old games (all my old lucasarts adventures with scummvm! oh yeah ), do a bit video-editing, surf, read my mails,... => :apple: seems like the way to go :)

Hmmm the rumors seem to have died down lately, there has not been a juicy macbook rumor for a good 2 weeks. Although I won't be buying my macbook till at least december I'm really looking forward to friday. I hope we get some nice announcements... Bah I hate waiting :(.

I was in the exact same situation as you-I had a friend that has owned Mac's for a few years, but I hate a touchpad so much that I would never buy any of the Mac laptops. But a few months ago i started dabbling in the 'Hackintosh' scene and was able to get Tiger installed with almost 100% functionality on a Thinkpad T42. I was impressed with it, but since not everything worked perfectly I started keeping a search on ebay for used Macbooks.

I was able to find a used white Macbook with everything minus the AC adapter for a great price, so I bought it and haven't looked back. I still will use Windows because I have to, but I find that my Macbook gets more use that my Windows machines these days.

I guess my advice is-if you want to just dabble in the Mac world, start off with a used Macbook or iMac-you will have great functionality at a usually low entry cost. Then, if you decide you need something with more power you can sell what you have and probably not lose much money due to Mac's excellent overall resale value.

Yes, I know what you say makes sense, but the other side of the coin is that if I get a new MacBook, then it's spec isn't too far off my current Windows laptop (Dell XPS 1210). That means that I *could* sell my Dell, and run Vista on the MacBook - I'm not into gaming, so although the GPU in the MacBook isn't as good as the XPS, it will probably suit me fine.

The only other thing is that the Dell has built in 3G, which although I use very infrequently (usually near a hotspot), it is sometimes handy - Of course I could always bluetooth to my phone, but I like the fact that the Dell has it's own 3G sim, so I don't have to muck around with the phone if I want to be on-line while in the middle of nowhere.

Then again, for my work, it's quite important that I have a functioning laptop, so at the end of the day I expect I'll use that as an excuse for buying myself a MacBook! "Ah yes, but I need it in case my Dell dies" :) - Trust me, I've spent a lot of time justifying to myself that I need a Mac!

The point is though, unless you aren't paying for it, you want a product to last as long as possible. The previous Macbook will undoubtedly become obsolete much faster than a new version. It's all about getting the most for your money.

No, I think you're missing the point. I'm saying you using words like "most people" based on your six Mac friends is a pretty limited view of the world. Mac users represent 5-8% of the World's computer users so how can you *EVER* under ANY circumstance use the words "most people" when referring to a statement based on 6 existing Mac users that don't even know what kind of hardware they bought and admittedly don't even care so long as it "just works" ??? I'm saying that's not a reasonable, let alone a valid statement.

"Most people" DO care what they're buying is what I'm saying. Now I could go ask 6 PC users I know or even 6 Linux users I know whether they know what's in their computer, whether they plan to upgrade anything in it and whether gaming or 3D applications are important to them and I'm sure depending on WHICH 6 I ask, I'll get 6 different answers because I know more than 6 computer users and certainly a lot more that have PCs than Macs and most of them DO know what's under the hood of their PC.

I'm so glad you cleared that up and why Macs don't have any "techy admin stuff" to do on them compared to PCs.

The thing is IF that were true, then 94% of the world would be using Macs, not PCs. The fact that 94% of the world uses Windows tells me "most people" do apparently want to worry about technical complexities, virues, etc. because they DO buy them and DO use them (or feel they are forced to since that's where the software is or in some of our cases, where the hardware that we want is). I'm not saying we wouldn't all be be better off with MacOSX compared to Windows (I do much prefer MacOSX personally), but rather it's a fact of life that MacOSX is a niche product tied directly to hardware by Apple's choosing which further limits it. It might even be 25% or more of the market right now if Apple didn't force you to buy their hardware to get their OS. But that's another matter.

Now what all this patent nonsense has to do with the fact that some of us want something better than a completely outdated Intel GMA 950 in the next Macbook update is really starting to get waaaay out in left field. Whether a person knows what it's in their Macbook is beside the point if they decide to run Madden 2008 and it refuses to run because the GPU isn't supported. Maybe one of those 'Sad Mac' faces would be a good way to break it to your six friends so they can comprehend why it won't run since they know not what is in their computer?

well said...

You missed off the "Pro" but I'll add that in for you :D
:apple:

Yes the MBP will get an update soon, but as has been stated before, that will come when the new mobile 'Penryn' processors become available to :apple:. I expect a MBP update at MacWorld in January, and a MB update as soon as next week/early Nov. :)

just a question...
does apple have a website where people can "vote" for popular customer "demands".. err.... like an alu macbook ? :D

Noooo, now everyone's saying that a new macbook is being released SOON, I want mine iminently. I don't really need it yet I suppose, but I just can't wait any longer. I'd love apple to actually schedule a release date to the public, that would be awesome.

Then buy it. You won't be left out style wise because a lot of people will still be using their pre-Aluminum MBs. It might be better to get a MB now anyway rather than wait for an update, a lot of the bugs have been hammered out on this design.

I'm in a similar boat to many here. Waiting for Leopard to get my first Mac (well, since my ][e, back in the day). But I'm not moving from Windows. I actually switched from Windows 95 to Slackware years ago, and have meandered about in the *nix world since then. But now I'm faced with a lack of time to keep both my desktop and a laptop up-to-date (I compile everything >_<), so I'm going to replace my aging Dell with a BlackBook!~ Hopefully before the end of the year.

If you can, I'd wait out for the new Macbooks mate.

Or at least til they're out and the blackbooks will be cheaper on eBay :)

Indeed, I am. Hoping for something in black Al~

Getting very impatient, though. >_<

But I'll make it! d(~_~)b
