lol, if i invest 1200 € for a new laptop, i might expect to run at least the state-of-the-art OS really fine and not in any "slow performance" for some activities. Just buy an actual Windows Laptop and Vista runs at very good performance to a better price.

many windows laptops use GMA 950... and vista is more H/W demanding. so u can expect better performance of leopard in macbook :)

so the final question leaves; runs Leopard really good on the current MacBook? This is a question no one answers completely.

I'll let ya know this Thursday or Friday, when FedEx drops off my Family Pack. I will be installing it on both my 2.4GHz Core2Duo iMac with 4GB and my 2.0GHz CoreDuo MacBook with 2MB.

What restrictions are there about CoreImage with GMA950?

Likely none, though performance will not be as good if they can't leverage the SSE/MMX abilities of the Intel CPUs (I'm a bit unclear reading Apple's datasheets).

great!! we will be waiting to hear ur comments. im sure we will also get some additional inputs from others about the speed difference (if theres any) between macbook and macbook pro when running cover flow etc..

i hope u have great time with the new kitty in ur macbook :D

this is the 15% reduced price (caution: probably has Italian keyboard) (which means many accented characters and no period - well, it's hidden rather well!)

I checked and Apple Store Italy is still selling this exact model for 1049 euro.

I just bought my C2D from Apple UK refurb store for 800 euro. Apple was kind enough to include iLife'08 upgrade DVD - but only Tiger, I will be buying (at release level 10.5.1) the fam upgrade pack anyway to support the rest of the home cluster, and I wanted a machine that DOES run Tiger. If the new hypothetical MacBook or NanoBook or AlBook are metal as predicted then I'm glad I bought the white plastic model. Sitting side by side MacBook with my MacBook Pro CD , the MacBook can use WiFi whilst the MacBook Pro can't even 'smell' the RF. Some small physics problem about putting microwave antennas in metal boxes! strangely plastic boxes are better performing!!

Gotta be. That's what I've been waiting for. If they're gonna be faster they've gotta be Santa Rosa & 3100 IG so we can run FCS 2 & CS3 with 4 GB of ram.No I will. :p
I remember your scathing review of the new Apple keyboards when the new iMac's were released. Considering these are pretty much the EXACT same keyboards that are on the MacBooks, I figured you'd never own one. (MacBook, that is)

Yeah, but I think it will..
I think we should wait till MacWorld to hear something about the aluminum MacBook with a (hopefully) upgraded graphics card.

Well, one has to ask, after having a look at the GMA 3000 specifications, yes, it will perform better, but will it be at the expense of being too power hungry? For me, I've moved over to MacBook and quite frankly, the GMA 950 is more then sufficient for most people. If you *really* need the huge amount of grunt, then maybe getting a MacBook Pro would be the better avenue to take.

If they release the new Servers on the 12 November (Penryn's out), I'd really like for them to announce something about the new laptops, just something little like "We're working on completely redesigned Penryn Laptops for January, see you at MacWorld" or something :)

.. "Meanwhile, here are those new Mac Pros all you rich lot have been moaning about for far too long" ;)

Kawai you live 15 minutes from me - small world huh.

That would be nice for those of us waiting, but they're not going to want to cut into current sales

They'll never decrease the battery life in a Macbook, they'll only increase it. If that new chip is indeed worse on battery life, Apple will simply include a higher capacity battery. Also, don't forget that Santa Rosa does bring some new battery saving technologies to the table...

P.S. More graphics power is never a bad thing, regardless of who uses it or not. All this will do is future-proof the solution some more.

But don't they announce new product lines early, since there's no sales to be lost and it lets the excitement build up?
This could be the way for the fabled portable line.. ;)
It seems a pretty general consensus on these forums that if the lines (MB especially) aren't updated by Christmas then we'll see it at MacWorld, you'd think Apple would try to get in for the holiday season if they could, though.

This Update Will Be The Most Significant Since The MacBook Started Last Year But ...

Sorry if I gave you the impression I would buy a MacBook. Probably not. If I did, I would use an external keyboard with it at base. But since I want to be able drive a 30" screen from my mobile Mac I am inclined to want to buy the next 17" HD MBP with the 2.6GHz Penryn early next year.

The appeal of the MacBook is the easy user installable HD which makes being able to have more than one you can easily swap out for multiple gigs a big deal. But I would have to make that my second mobile and I would rather wait for a Penryn or Nelham MB in that case.

I'd use an external keyboard with my mobile...regardless of which one I purchased. But, for the record, I very much LIKE the MacBook keyboard (as far as laptop keyboards go, that is).

I had considering going with the MBP for its dual-link DVI goodness so I, too, could drive a 30" LCD. However, I was ultimately swayed by the 24" Dell monitors with their multiple inputs (and the fact that I can use it also with my other, non-dual-link-DVI-equipped computers)...so now, the premium price for the MBP doesn't make as much sense for me.

I would, however, like to be able to play the upcoming StarCraft 2...so my decision will hinge on whether we get updated IG anytime soon. I'll be purchasing mid-Nov. If the MacBooks are SR and x3100 equipped, I'll buy one...Otherwise, it's a 15" MBP for me.

No. The SR chipset and LED screens will be better for battery life as is already proven in the MBPs.

I am still trying to figure out why the delay is so large for the 17" MacBook Pro.

mbp17.jpg

It's 7-10 days for everyone, but 2-3 weeks for schools buying them. This is for both the standard and high resolution models. What else could cause a delay like that? If it is a component shortage, wouldn't that affect the similarly equipped 15" model? Something doesn't seem right. I think this is the first sign that something's coming...and it's not the MacBook....

By the way, schools trying to buy MacBooks -- they are at 5-7 days wait at the online Apple Store.

You think that is bad, New Zealand is being really screwed over. I talked to two retail chains who have been unable to get in the 15inch MacBook Pro's. I would have love to purchase one but due to Apple's refusal to 'play ball', I couldn't. 'Screw teh foreigners' seem to be the rally cry for Apple.

There there's no need to include any sort of discrete graphics solution unless you're buying a Pro line of hardware?

The masses will never need it?

Why does Apple spend so much on getting some of the fastest mobile processors then?

To compensate for the poor GPU

In part, Apple spend the money on great mobile processors as these are the specs that buyers look at...

How so? CPardon my ignorance but can't you order online through Apple? I've given up on retailers. I went to one last week and asked about a Macbook. "It'll take about 2-3 weeks to order one in" was the response. So I went home, ordered online and it was shipped within 48 hours.

I know there's truth to this, but I think this is something where it isn't PURELY about the marketing.

I think it is actually a really nice thing that even in the lowest end config, Apple still puts in a 2.0 GHz C2D with 4MB of L2 cache.

A lot of similarly priced consumer notebooks in this price range often have 1.5 GHz C2D's with 2MB L2 cache.

I think Apple at least is offering a good performance part that can have some real world benefits in terms of computational power.

Having a better GPU would do wonders though...

True, although outside of gaming, what would a better GPU help with exactly?

I think the only people that a better GPU would help would be people who intend to install Boot Camp and play 3D games, but I'm not sure that the specs of the MacBook should really be done to cater to this market.

I guess one could argue that if Apple at least put something like the 8400M GS on the MacBook, more game devs might be willing to support it, but I don't really know.

At most I'd say it would be nice for their to be a MacBook config that did have a dedicated GPU.

A $1499 MacBook with an 8400M GS would for example be more competively priced.

Try Disco, it should be beautiful, but the effects are disabled on a Macbook...if all Macs had good graphics chips, many apps could be written which take advantage of this with cool graphics...

Core Image and the overall GUI performance would benefit as well. Don't try doing anything in Finder with something as simple as Google Earth running.

GPU also helps those in the creative field of design / motion graphics / 3d.

I for one would love an overhaul on the GPU... for the creative purposes foremost, and of course the gaming on bootcamp :p
