Either Next Tuesday or not for a few weeks

And here is why:

Apple has a return policy.

Scenario 1: If people order a new macbook this friday, then the shipping will change to a few days and when there order ships next tuesday, it is the new macbook. No harm done, no returns.

Scenario 2: Leopard comes out friday. lot's of people who were waiting make the purchase of a new macbook. two weeks later, the new macbooks are announced. with a 14 day return policy, everyone returns their macbook for the new one. now apple has alot of "used" old models.

Scenario 3: Leopard comes out friday. Apple waits until at least 3 weeks to announce the new macbooks. now nobody can return them and apple makes alot of money by moving all of their old macbook stock.

I go with Scenario 3. if apple is smart, they will have the new macbooks just before thanksgiving (it's a shopping holiday in the US, google it) to catch the holiday sales.

I think that if they do not update the MB's today that they will not do so for a while. People who place an order today their MB's will ship with Leopard. It would cause to much of an outrage if Apple allowed people to buy MB's with Leopard now and then a week later released a new updated MB. I don't think that they would do that.

Scenario 4: Leopard comes out Friday. Apple waits until Macworld to update the Macbooks. They still sell a ton of Macbooks this holiday season with Leopard helping to lure consumers, all the while charging the same price for extremely outdated hardware. Revenue is high, profits are probably higher than they would be with the introduction of an entirely new model.

Personally, I'm hoping for scenario 1. Having recently sold my beloved 12" Powerbook G4, I've been waiting months to buy a new Macbook. Now I refuse to buy one before they're updated, but it seems like there have been an unusually low number of rumors circulating if a significant upgrade was truly imminent.

Tuesday November 6

Nope. Update is due and will happen in two weeks.
There is a good chance that the new macbook will be released early november.. last years november update happened on november 8th
Zactly. This year that will be Tuesday November 6 - the only free date left for this announcement. November 13 will be the new Mac Pro and then it's Thanksgiving etc forward.
But did Leopard come out 2 weeks beforehand?
That is a completely irrelevant aspect of the situation.

I hope he is right^

Multimedia's looks to be the most logical guess so far. Looking at MacTactic will show you that the update is "expected" in 2 weeks, 3 days. And seeing as the consensus is that product releases generally occur on Tuesday, we could round that up to 2 weeks. Nov 6th. :)

P.S - if you're as pathetic as me, MacTactic have a nice Dashboard widget to keep you up to date

I too hope that is right, but there will be a large volume of new mac sales upon the release of OS X.5, and then for new systems to come out 2 weeks later sounds as if it's asking for some trouble.
Like the iPhone where the price was dropped, we know how picky people can be.
I do, however, believe November 6 is the most likely of all dates available.
:apple:

If the macbook gets a decent upgrade, such as a better video processor, I will most definetly buy one. Otherwise I will wait for a Macbook Pro. This will be my first mac, and I just glad I found this website!

I couldn't agree more!
Welcome to the forums, anyway.
We're very nice people :D

Actually, considering Penryn's slated release on Nov. 12, you could be right about the Nov. 6 date for MacBooks. Nov. 19 is probably too late to ramp up for holiday sales.

So Nov. 6 it is! SR/X3100 integrated graphics/2.2GHz & 2.4GHz/120GB - 200GB HD/1GB RAM (1 X 1GB), same prices as current models.

Only remaining question is whether it will come in colored anodized aluminum like the iPod Nano/Shuffle. Oh, and whether Apple will finally drop the Combo Drive.

Edit: How about a $899 2 GHz 80GB Edu model too?

they have cleared up their stock by giving away the free ipod to students i believe...
the rest of the buyers will be plain unlucky...

ahh that would be awesome

I've actually changed my mind a bit on the aluminum case. At first I was really gung ho about the rumored casing change, especially since it would probably lighten the weight a little bit. But I've also noticed a ton of complaints on how the casing affects the Macbook Pros ability to get a wifi signal. If I can't get a decent signal, then my machine would be practically worthless. I currently get internet in my apartment from a neighbor's wireless router (with her permission), so not having reliable wifi is not an option.

Just wondering if anyone else has heard about this issue and the extent to which it affects the wifi signal?

Also an $899 for the 80 gig model wouldn't be unreasonable, I've seen them advertised in the refurbished section for $949. They would probably have to drop that price when they update. The unfortunate thing is that you can't apply an EDU discount to a refurbished item (I asked).

And people riot like they did with the iPhone price drop... :p

I too hope for Scenario 1, though Scenario 4 would likely be best from Apple's financial point of view.

'We are busy updating the store for you and will be back shortly' currently on the the UK Apple site. Usually just gives an error when the store is undergoing maintenance. Surprise Macbook upgrades today maybe, or just routine?

Just diving into this thread I'll throw out my wish for Apple to do something like the Toshiba Portege for the forthcoming MacBook, and utilize OS X Leopard's Multitouch functionality (Click on Tour then roll your mouse over Tablet Mode). How cool would that be :p
