It's likely to have a new Penryn processor, that's the biggest upgrade it will probably get. Harddisk and mem enlargement maybe? There are also rumors about a new sort of iPhone like touchpad (special gestures etc.), although they were aimed at the normal MB's. I don't really know a lot about MBP I'm more into standard MB's and they will probably be updated somewhere in the next 2-3 weeks. Can't wait for it.

Get rid of the plastic, backlit keyboard, small amount of dedicated graphics and updated hardware and I'm sold, surely it's not toooo much to ask.
Please :apple:

I really do doubt that you will see new updated MBP's as soon as January. Penryn is not due to end of Q1/Q2. If they released them at the end of Q1 that would be more realistic.

As for the updated MB's i think that would be bad customer relations for Apple to treat their customers who bought MB's with Leopard in such a manner. I know that they like there secrecy but i don't think that is the correct way to do things. They should have allowed the MB's to have been pre-ordered and to be shipped with Leopard. Upgrading to SR and upgrading the graphics does not need some big announcement or a release event.

What I've read is that mobile Penryns are out in January not later. I believe the 2.8GHz Penryn MacBook Pro will be the hardware centerpiece of the January 15 SteveNote in San Francisco.

November 6 you will see just how far off base you are. The back-to-school flush is over. New models featuring 4GB ram recognition and X3100 IG will fill many Christmas stockings this winter.

I have read quite a lot of articles on the Penryn release as well and most articles are now saying late Q1 early Q2.
Btw, i am not saying that new MB's are definetly not going to happen on November 6th. What i am saying is that in my opinion Apple should have released them already and started shipping them with Leopard from tomorrow.

Why cant they have GeForce 8700M GT ore the upcoming 8800m(g92).

whats the difference between x3100ig and gma x3100?are there only one gma x3100?..

I rather see they continue with geforce.Simply because i think its bether..Intel gma is not good for gaming, videoediting etc..I read people comments on using gma x3100 and its not the best compare to nvidia.

If there is an update to the MacBook coming, then I'd expect the biggest change would almost certainly be an LED screen. Probably CPU upgrades as well, but I'd be willing to bet on LED.

A.

Because then the only reason to buy an MBP is for the larger screen.

The X3x00 series integrated GPUs are a serious step-up for Intel, even if they are not a serious step-up, period, compared to dedicated GPUs.

Apple needs to differentiate their product line, but they don't want to have a dozen (or more) models out there like many Tier One PC makers do. So they have to draw really hard lines between families in terms of specifications and capabilities.

They currently have geforce nvidia why should they switch?
Is the x3100 bether then the current geforce 8600 gt in mackbook pro's?
I think it would smarter to continue with nvidia with the 8700 gt ore the upcoming 8800..By the way the Dell XPS M1730 use sli 8700..And personally i prefer nvidia..

There's probably some confusion. I think they were probably talking about the MacBook.

Apple isn't going to switch from the 8600M GT to GMAX3100 for the MacBook Pro. The MacBook though would be likely to get GMAX3100.

The 8600M GT is still the most powerful card you can get in a 15" form factor (and the MBP is lighter and thinner than most 15" PC notebooks).

The 8700M GT or upcoming 8800 are really only suitable for 17" machines. They won't show up in 15" machines.

The XPS M1730 you mentioned is also almost 10 pounds.

Note that Dell's upcoming XPSM1530 (their 15" machine which might compare with the MBP in thinness and lightness) is reportedly only going to have an 8600M GS (significantly less powerful than the 8600M GT).

That's a great recap for anyone that's going to ask which model is going to get what video card. ;)

It's the more of a higher clocked 8400M GT.

Don't confuse MacBook and MacBook Pro. The X3100 is a lowend integrated graphics (IG) GPU that is intended for laptops like the MacBook. Besides being faster than the current GMA950 by 2 to 3 times it also has built in hardware transform and lighting which is requird by many modern 3D games. The 8600/8700 are highend laptop dedicated (separate from the main chipset) GPUs intended for laptops like the MacBook Pro. The 8700m is currently the fastest laptop GPU available but does generate lots of heat and eats up battery time. The 8800m was supposed to be out by now but was postponed. Maybe January.

EDIT: I type too slow. Thanks Zadillo/Eldorian

Im am soooooo sorry but this just does not make since. They have to come out with the update on Friday. Think about it....if they do come out with the new update on the 6th of Nov. What will the average person do? RETURN THE OLD MACBOOK!! I did the math and 6th is still under the 14 day policy. I would greatly pay the restocking fee for the new hotness(alum, faster speeds,"new trackpad"). Please someone tell me Im wrong.....Multimedia this is where you comment!!lol:apple::apple::apple:

Exactly

Yep. my thoughts exactly. apple is into making money. it will cost them money to release MB on Nov 6. In other words, not gonna happen.

Question Multi, would they announce an update tomorrow, or would they just surprise us on November 6th with it just showing up on store shelves?

Makes sense!
So, let's hope for the update to come tomorrow!

If there would be an update tomorrow, shouldn't we get by now some kind of information or rumors?
I believe if it's just a small update (not aluminium case), Apple can surprises us!

Not tomorrow. Tomorrow is Leopard Premiere Day. What historical evidence do you have to corroborate the idea that Apple ever sends mixed and confusing multiple messages to the press for INK?
Yep. my thoughts exactly. apple is into making money. it will cost them money to release MB on Nov 6. In other words, not gonna happen.
You are deluded if you don't think it's gonna happen November 6 and that when it does Apple will lose money. They're not going to shout it out with a press event. It's just a quiet little bump that 99.99999999999999999999999999999999999% of Apple's recent customers won't even know happened or if they do won't care.

November 6 quietly.

You guys know nothing about how Apple does their releases. The idea it will happen tomorrow is laughable.

Not everyone is buying a new machine, and the people picking up Leopard tomorrow are well aware of the rumors.

Newwwwwwbie

What up everybody. I am about to switch to apple after all of college and most of grad school with the release of the new macbooks. I figure once I get mine I will have many a question that can get answered here with all the macpros that read this site (pun intended. I know, I'll work on better mac jokes as my newbie status improves)

So even though most people won't notice when the new macbooks come out, would they quietly just be available in the morning the day they come out or at some point later in the day? Plus, would us college students be able to get the education discount the day they come out at the apple stores or would we have to wait for our universities to get shipments in.

Excuse the long first post, I'm a little excited for making the switch plus purchasing my first laptop. Giggity Giggity!

Depends. In the past, Apple used to just sell the old product first until they were out, and then they'd sell the new product. I recall this tactic with the Mac Mini, which had stickers that essentially said "specs shown are subject to change" or some-such to legally cover themselves.

However, if you go in and ask for a machine with the specific specifications of the new model, you'll get that.

The next Macbook won't have GMA950 - it can barely handle Leopard as it is. To see what I mean, turn dock magnification on with Leopard on a Macbook and see how much slower the animation runs than Tiger.
