I have the current 11" keyboard folio and it works just fine on a lap. The pics make me wonder about how it will distribute weight. Has anyone seen this new magic keyboard on a person's lap, or any mentions of it?
Check out the Apple ad on YouTube for "How to correctly use your computer" and you'll see examples of typing on your lap and reclining with it on your lap.

I had the same issue with the original keyboard for my 2nd Gen Pro. Apple exchanged it for free and the second one worked well for years. I sold it, as the 4th Gen iPad was delivered.

tried doing that but then the apple store shut down for the time being

he may well have... they likely would embargo reviews until the launch date (next week) or slightly earlier... like the end of the week. they will stagger the embargo with reviews of the iPhones SE though.

yes and no... you still have to have a separate place to keep the keyboard is the only issue. for example a use case I experience nearly weekly... I am sitting in the back of a plane and want to read in portrait... right now I just fold back my Smart Keyboard Folio and read away but with the new Magic Keyboard I'll need to detach the iPad, store the keyboard somewhere and then read with the iPad "naked" if I suddenly need to set it down etc. I ordered a Magic Keyboard but I'm wondering if I will travel with it or just leave it home to use a "desktop/home" setup for my iPad Pro.

Actually, the great thing about the new Magic Keyboard is that while you’re sitting (unfortunately) in the back of the plane, and you want to shift from typing to doing something in portrait mode holding it off the case, you can simply pick up the iPad from the case, and use it as is. No need to fold anything over or put the keyboard away. Then when you need to get up to stretch or use the facilities, you simply put it back down on the case and fold it flat to put it away. One thing I have noticed as I’ve effectively stopped using my keyboard folio, is that the iPad Pro (12.9”) is great to hold on to outside a a case, when you’re doing things like watching YouTube or gaming. For me, even though I’ve been using it for more than a year, most of the time it’s been in the keyboard folio, so now that I’m using it more outside the folio, it feels like a new device again.

I’ll also add, given I’m traveling similarly on a weekly basis (or was prior to the pandemic), another benefit of the new keyboard is the backlit keys. That was always a pet peeve of mine, especially for night or early morning flights where I didn’t want the overhead light on but needed at least a bit of light to help my typing.

Ordered. I sold my Macbook Pro from 2015 and replaced it with this year's 12.9 iPad Pro. The iPad could cover all my needs plus be a giant touch screen and I can play all of my games on it. I just need a keyboard and mouse that I don't need to carry separate. Plus that "floating" design is sucking me in.

I will let you guys know what I think.

I know this is a pricey solution and maybe kind of silly to some, but I own both the Smart Keyboard folio and the regular smart folio. I love the keyboard and use it most of the time. But for reading portrait or very causal use on the couch where I know I won’t be typing and want comfort, I use the regular folio. It makes the iPad feel so much thinner too (and the keyboard folio isn even that thick!) once you get used to the Smart Keyboard. The regular folio is thin enough to not even notice it in my bag, so I usually just have it in my bag for options.

I am very interested in this but want to see the review videos first. It seems like a stand just for desk and to carry but will not fold flat for non-keyboard use. It’s very expansive to only use at my desk.
This is what I’m worried about, I don’t really see how this would work on a lap at all, I feel like it would be very top-heavy. I’m waiting for the new MacBooks to be released.

I was worried about this too, but fellow macrumors member dalestrauss pointed me to YouTube for apples official ad: how to correctly use a computer. Within the first 15 seconds of the video you’ll see it folded flat and on someone’s lap, and the last few seconds they’ll shut it closed.

logtech just released a similar folio, but does not have the floating hinge and I think is only for the regular ipads(?) but its under $200 I believe.

Question for everyone buying the magical keyboard. Are you buying the portfolio case as well?
I bought the folio cover (non-keyboard) when I purchased my 12.9 2020 knowing I’d grab the Magiv Keyboard as soon as I could get my hands on it. Feel these 2 options give me the best flexibility of use.

I have the same delivery window as you and I’m in Texas. I think maybe some shipping dates may have slipped as I didn’t order until about an hour after you could.

Same timeframe here (4/24-5/1), ordered similar time (an hour after announcement), but in WA state. I think it’s the dates slipping as opposed to geography (at least in the states).

That's if you'd rather have a bulky "foldy" thing in your hands when you're not using the keys vs. just removing the iPad from the case. I think that's one of the best features of this, that the iPad can be so easily removed and replaced.
You can do that with any apple and many third party cases.

I have seen somewhere where apple claims it works fine it laps. I assume that’s not the case at all angles of the ipad, though.

I ordered then cancelled. I literally bought the Smart Folio Case for my 2018 12.9 three weeks before they announced the 2020 iPad Pro and Magic Trackpad Keyboard. I can’t justify the $350 so I bought the Magic Mouse 2 which is now supported fully wit’s iPadOS 13.4. It was the Magic Trackpad keyboard or Magic Mouse 2 and AirPods Pro for the same $350.

Your signature mentions a 11” iPad Pro. What made you go 12.9 for the 2020 iPad? Just curious.
I’ll need to update that. Also have the 11” 2018.

An iPad has been my primary personal computing device since the iPad 2. Always been a massive fan. Ever since the 12.9“ was released I’ve wanted to own one and I’ve finally found myself in the position to do so.

Delighted with the increased screen size on the bigger device. However, I still find myself going back to the 11” at times. The size is perfect for grabbing and using at any point. I feel with the 12.9”, there is a bit more adjusting. The additional weight and size are noticeable when using as a tablet. To be fair, I’ve used the smaller device for years and the 12.9” for a couple of weeks, so I may get used to it.

I’ve only purchased the Magic Keyboard for the 12.9” as I see it as my laptop replacement, which can be an iPad when I want it. I have the Apple Smart Keyboard already for the 11”.

Yes... That's my point. Why complain that this doesn't fold underneath the iPad when you can very easily remove the iPad if you want to use it away from a desk... That's a complaint for those cases where the iPad is more firmly attached. They require a way to use it in pure "tablet mode".

Does anyone know if this works with Sidecar? I just want to be able to go upstairs with my iMac, lol. Get some fresh air and sunshine for a couple hours while working. One time I was able to get it to work upstairs with the Bluetooth keyboard and mouse connected to my iMac, but that’s kinda clunky. I’m tired of my basement life and I don’t have a good spot upstairs for setting up everything with all my drives, second display, etc. It’s nice to have flexibility and I’m waiting for the MBP to update before buying. I used to have one through work but changed jobs early this year.

Ordered. but frankly, it's got to do some things they haven't told us like make me a latte in the morning or tuck me in at night or else for the price, it's going to have to go back.

I hope I find it that simple in practice, I have my doubts with cramped areas like aircraft seats. I usually have the big window seat in the very front of the aircraft but with all the adjusted schedules find myself sitting in back to position for other flights frequently and I typically use my iPad Pro in portrait for reading back there. That said its too nice looking to pass up so we shall see how it goes...

The iPad works with sidecar. Are you referring to whether the keyboard work? I believe with side car, it follows MacOS keys? Someone confirm if I'm right or wrong.

I wouldn't expect it to work any differently than an iPad with keyboard and trackpad already does - for me the keyboar works but mouse input isn't sent to the Mac (only the Pencil does this). Maybe something that will be fixed. Or you could use one of the third party apps that already do have this functionality...

For me the biggest issue will be lapability. I want to use the iPad on my lap and type with the keyboard. If this is not possible, or not as good as with my MacBook Pro, then the keyboard will go back to Apple. I will still be happy to use my iPad without a keyboard.

I find the Smart Keyboard Folio works great for me on the lap but I am concerned about the iPad falling off the Magic Keyboard as it floats. I know the magnets are strong but they aren't THAT strong, a fairly slight bump will dislodge the iPad from the Smart Keyboard Folio magnets but it usually remains secure because it notches into the bottom keyboard side instead of floating like it will on the Magic Keyboard. I'm sure on a controlled setting like a desk it will be great but on a lap, I worry. I got it anyway because, 1st world problems, but I still am nervous that it won't be as great in practice as the pictures try to show.

Does anyone know if the power output on this case would be enough to power the Apogee ONE for iPad/Mac?

It’d be nice to get away from batteries

It will work great on a lap I’m sure
