An example case would be me just an international student studying in Australia who changes the flight so that it would match the delivery date in advance.

*snip*

You never had a delivery date from Apple, you had an estimated delivery date. There's a big difference and if you made any critical plans around that date then you're getting exactly what you deserve.

My date's been pushed back too and I'm a little miffed. It doesn't affect my work or study, though, because I understand what an estimate is. I bought the first liquid-cooled G5 PowerMac and the first MacBook Pro when they were released. Both of them shipped late in relation to their estimates.

I suggest you learn from this experience.

Try telling that to people who's businesses and livelyhoods are suffering down time, at the worst possible time during a recession/depression because Apple cant get their acts together. Thats a really naive statement. Businesses have to plan these changes months ahead, and have litterally one set of computers being taken out of service and another set being delivered over a matter of 1 or 2 days. Its really unacceptable. Apple needs to set a concrete delivery date and stick to it so we can make plans.

It must even be annoying for those people who want to plan to be in when the computer arrives so they can sign for it, rather than having to wait a further 48 hours.

I doubt that a company that is financially suffering in the current economic climate is going to go drop a few grand on a new laptop or six, when they can get away with pushing their existing computers for a few more months. People are not going bankrupt because they don't have a 17" MacBook Pro.

Plus, name me a single company that chucks out old hardware before the new stuff arrives. Yeah, I thought not.

Basically, you're just miffed you won't get your new toy quite as fast and that you may have to change a few plans in order to get it. Quit being over-dramatic and making a mountain out of a molehill. Delays to hardware happen for most companies, Apple included. Software also gets delayed on a regular basis.

Basically, you don't get it. A 17" MBP is more than just a "toy" to many of us who make our livelihoods by spending 12+ hours a day on the computer and require the best available equipment.

In my case, I sold my extra laptop that my girlfriend typically uses, expecting to have my 17" MBP in a few days and she could take my 15". Now that plan is shot to hell, so explain to me again how it's just because I want a new toy.

Apple attempted to offer me a pathetic $45 off my $300 purchase. I told them that their offer was insulting and the only acceptable solution was to refund my antiglare display and all shipping charges, which they did. I still, feel, however, that they owe us all better than this.

So whats your plan now? Are you never going to buy apple again? If you reorder now, you just need to wait even longer.....

This is just appalling. Apple obviously couldn't care less about its customers. Do you guys honestly believe that the reps over the phone don't know what's going on? If they had stated in early January that you probably wouldn't receive your laptop until March (or later) would you have stlil placed your order?

It would be nice to at least get an official word regarding the release date. A lot of people are in need of a laptop for school, work, etc. and opted for the 17" MBP with the promise of a late January release.

I think I'm going to start shopping around for a different laptop. I've been using both Macs and PCs for the last 13 years or so and I don't feel like I'd be losing anything if I gave up OSX.

It's a shame I have a $1,300 Apple gift card. I should have taken my cash back when I returned my unibody MacBook but I didn't know it would end up like this. I purchased a 15" unibody MBP and ended up returning that as well, for the 17", thinking it would be released late January like Apple said, only to be left without a laptop.

Overall I'm just appalled, yet not surprised, at the way Apple is handling the release of this thing. The least they could do is make some type of announcement about it so we aren't left in the dark.

Well.. no offence, but just go on and do it then. You could have gotten the old MBP 17" or a Windows-laptop if getting it right away was the most important thing to you. Also, most other companies present their new products several months before they're available.

I was at Apple Nordic yesterday and got a hands-on with the new 17", and I'd say it's worth the wait. And for the record, my MBA died on me a week ago so I'm also left without a computer.

Hey guys,

I was just reading through alot of this and started to think about these delays. I headed over to the apple site and took a look at the tesch specs for the computer. Now, I'm not sure if this has alway been this way but, on the included software it states iLife 09. I thought I had read people saying that iLife wont come on the new MacBook Pros for a few months. So, maybe that could be a reason why shipping was delayed. If this is old news then just disregard this post.:apple:

Here is the link if you care to check it out:

Just called for grins and asked if they were offering any program for those that were depending on the initially issued delivery dates that were pushed back recently.

They said no formal concession plan is in place, but they changed my shipping to 2-3 day expedited. I appreciated that since at least my livelihood isn't dependent on this machine and I can wait; thereofre, in my opinion, I got faster shipping at no extra cost at all to me.

I am thankful.

Sorry to hear; however, that those who make their living depending on the best out there (and this is the case very often in business to stay ahead of your competition) are experiencing these delays. I do understand you need the equipment and plan your cash flow and schedules around this stuff.

could we please not turn this into the bitch and moan thread. If you have waited over a month for this machine it cannot be so mission critical that you can't wait two more weeks. Your "girlfriends" will just have to wait to get your computers, or your could <gasp> share. And obviously your businesses have lasted the past moth on your current computers. Two weeks won't matter. But, lets face it, if you can afford a 3K notebook then your life is good enough that we don't need to hear you complain. Just cool off.

Believe me, these guys are not going to listen to you. Do you really think that all this rambling is about logic, or rationalistic deduction? Of course not...it is about getting that DAG GUM 17" Macbook Pro and who in the world should have to wait for it????!!!!!

I completely agree. He now uses 15" one so he can either wait a little longer or buy current 15". It also shows, that he is just venting rather than actually constructively complaining as he would never sell his computer if he really depends on it until the new one actually arrives and is ok.
People just need to get a grip and understand, that things go wrong and even if Apple did everything right their suppliers could be the one to blame and there is no way to influence that.
So, as Mark said, lets keep this post clear of insults etc. as it is only going to aggregate more hate here.
So, lets start with a simple one. :))
Is there actually a store that at least has one on display?

I love the machines but god their customer support is just crap. Yesterday when I called the guy(s) had no idea what was going on, they didn't even know there was a delay. He just kept saying, "Umm..", "Ummm...", yeah, your date is the 19th now, "Um...". He gave me an email address to voice my complaint to and told me it would be answered with 24 hours so I sent off about a page last night to them to get this email back this morning.

This is the new MBP and a Feb 19th quote is showing as the shipping date. Please visit www.apple.com/orderstatus for updates to your order.

Are you f*cking serious...it's like they scan the email for 17" MBP and send this canned email. She answered none of the questions or concerns I sent. Argg, f*ck you Apple.:mad:

Nothings really that wrong with the economy its mostly media hype.
Some people save their money rather than blow it on frivolous things during the good times.
The 17" is going to make more way way way way way more than $3000.

Same here every computer I touch has paid for itself especially Macs. They far easier to be more productive. Hell, I'm making more money doing resumes with iWork '09 then I did when I was using Microsoft Office '98, 2000, XP and 2003 Combined! iWork.com is really worth it and it helped me dealing with a lot of people with PCs. When they showed it at MacWorld I was sold because I see a true benefit, more money for me! :D

Could be. I also heard the planets were aligning late January and some of the Apple folks went out to see if Hale Bop would take them away from slaving over the deadlines set by Steve.

I forget where I saw this but I heard Chinese new year was the reason.

Hey, for those thinkiing the original macbook pro price was $2,999, the original release announcement shows the following:

Pricing & Availability
The new 17-inch MacBook Pro will be shipping at the end of January and will be available through the Apple Store® (www.apple.com), Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers for a suggested retail price of $2,799 (US), and includes:

From the apple.com site.

While I don't agree with the rant you're responding to (plenty of people as you pointed out use their laptops for work), the situation you've created is one of your own making. I also use my machine 12+ hours a day for work but I won't be making any plans for my laptop until I have the new one firmly in hand (and probably tested for a week to ensure no issues). Smooth transitions are about hedging your bets.

You guys should stop complaining. Look at my ship/receive date.

Cry me a river. Apple is not the only company that experiences delays shipping new products. I don't think there's ever been a product announced at Macworld, that when offered up for "presale," shipped on time. I've ordered a lot of post-Macworld goodies - none ever were shipped on time.

If this is your last Apple purchase, oh well.

On another note,

Hey guys, I ordered a 17" MacBook Pro, and even though the ship date was originally February 9th, I threw away my old computer, bag and accessories, bought a new bag and accessories, I then setup my desk to accommodate my coming MacBook Pro, and also I stopped doing my work while I waited for the new machine because I threw away my old computer, and also because of other reasons that may not make sense but do in my head.

Now the ship date is delayed to the 19th and I'm pissed. I really need it because I rely on it for work. Also because see, I threw away my old computer. So I need to rely on a product that I don't have and was not even estimated to ship until between the 9th and the 16th. Then because I couldn't do my work, I had to give up my apartment, and also my girlfriend left because I couldn't buy her anything for her birthday, because I was going to rely on my not-shipped MacBook Pro to make money. Then earlier when I was at Whole Foods some guy tried to mug me as I was leaving, he shot at me and a bullet grazed my leg, which wouldn't have happened if I had that MacBook Pro in my new bag, because the bullet would have hit the computer instead.

Point is, it's all Apple's fault.

Apparently some people still don't understand what's happening.

None of us have had a firm delivery date from Apple. Not one. We've had estimated delivery dates. There's a big difference and if anyone has made any critical plans around an estimated date then they don't deserve any sympathy at all. See my sig. for my normal attitude to this sort of petulance! :)

That may sound harsh but it's true. It's in the nature of bleeding-edge technology (the new battery with its active control system certainly comes under this heading, and the non-glossy display option is also comparatively new) that unforeseen issues can arise between development and production. If you're a customer for such technology, you have to accept this. If you can't then you need to stick with the current generation, where a production line is already established and delivery can be predicted with great accuracy.
