i had the crash with battery and without
also with WEP and without

getting an ethernet cable today and will update.

it sounds like the 2wire and my mac aren't best friends, but i think
its more of a side issue, something with the driver or airport card
is definitely messed up.

I had two kernel panics so far.

The first was from when I was calibrating my battery. I let the laptop go to sleep, then let it sleep until the battery is completely dead. I then plugged it in and hit the power button. Panic!

The second is out of nowhere when I woke up from sleep. I restarted, and my settings in the Logitech Control Center are all reset, so it's the obvious culprit. I uninstalled that piece of **** ASAP.

I had it on my MacBook before this, and it does the same thing. Random kernel panics. Logitech writes ****** software.

I had the MBP for almost 2 weeks now.

My new MBP is finally on it's way home from the factory in China. Well, at least I have a tracking number, I don't think it actually LEFT the factory yet. But hopefully I'll have it super soon. I'm never letting it out of my sight again! :p

My MBP arrived this morning (a day early!) so I'll use it at work and see if the kernel panics continue. To be honest, I expect them to. There are reports of people using their kernel panicking MBPs in Windows with no connection problems whatsoever (on the same networks). I'll let you know how it goes later today.

response from apple less than satisfactory...

Ok, so i'm a long time linux(home) and pc(work) user who finally made the switch. I just bought one of the new 2.4Ghz mbp's a week+ ago...

I had a kernel panic the first day, thought i did something so reinstalled the OS. It happened again. I brought it in to the apple store, got a new one. same thing. I went in AGAIN thinking it may be a bad set off the line... same thing.

apple L2 support has been looking at this, and they informed me today that they would need me to send in my 3rd one. I told them that was ridiculous... they could take either of my other two "broken" ones if they thought it was a hardware issue. they then informed me that since i didn't want to do that i should go to AT&T and get a new 2wire router/modem. That is stupid, since i've had that same one for a couple years--NEVER a problem on any other pc/os.

They asked what I thought they should do since i didn't want to cooperate with their "solution"... i informed them that since they (by their own admission) have seen the same panic logs i sent in, it is not a router issue. Which, by the way has kept working as my mbp panics.

They left me saying they don't know what else to do, but i can hope for the leopard upgrades to fix this problem. BS. They should be bringing in a 2wire router, debug the driver, and fix it. end of story. She said that she's sure they're going to do "something like that".

customer service my ace. i love the comp besides not trusting it to use wireless. I will try the things people have listed on here with wpa2, but i just wanted to vent. Any consoling words??... anyone?

hey twoboxen,

i'm in the same state as you are. pc user for 11 years, converted to mac 2 weeks ago. got the laptop replaced (thought it was weird they replaced it so fast), same panics with the new one.

also using atnt 2wire router.

i switched it to no-protection and haven't seen a panic for a week, although i believe the last panic i had was after i switched to open-network.

i don't bother calling the support as they can't do anything.
like you said, i'm sure some apple kernel coder is debugging
the driver as we speak. i hope i'm not assuming too much, as this seems
to be a problem hitting lots of users.

so, lets just wait for the update to come, if it takes more than a few weeks we should just make a petition page, have all of us sign it and perhaps that will grab their attention.

Ok, the one consistency I'm beginning to see is the 2Wire router. I have AT&T's 2Wire router and its the one giving me problems. I've tried all the encryption settings and un-encrypted but it still persists. I guess I'll go try it at the local Panera and maybe a near by coffee shop and she if i cant induce a KP.

I'm calling AppleCare now, and then I'll go testing around town. If it still KPs, well back to Apple it goes, I'm done with this BS.

optimism recovering...

well, at least there seems to be several people with this issue. That will get Apple's engineers motivated. If it were just me I'm sure I'd be up a creek. a $129 fix? (or less for some more motivated people ;))

Is it possible this is a battery issue. Perhaps, failure to properly power the computer... or something, since it only happens on battery power. I can run the mac as hard as possible on wall power and it works perfect. Why would it ONLY suck on battery power?!

doubtful

@kensir

Battery issues seem to have something to do with it, but it's more likely the drivers are trying to be smart and throttle to save power. For example, they might not continually perform scans--only continue to transmit on known connections (unless a manual scan).

regardless, it sucks :)

hey, how do you request for a replacement? just walk into the apple store and talk to the counter? what do i have to bring? any steps/procedures to do before going?

just walk in with your macbookpro

i didn't bring anything else (no power-coord, box, etc).

but,

i recommend you don't replace as it will just be a waste of your time
and of apples money, you'll get back an exact same laptop with the
same problems.

Confirmed

Thanks to knowone for pointing out the issue with IPv6.
- Indeed, this eliminates lagging of page loading (wireless WPA2). They starting popping super fast once you disable it in airport preferences. THANK YOU!

To Apple:
- IS THIS A NORMAL BEHAVIOUR? let's fix it and fast

In regards to Kernel Panics:
- I've a brand new MBP (3 weeks old, the LED backlit one). I've had over 15 KPs in the past few weeks. Primarily at work on a Qwest DSL Modem/Router using WPA2 when switching from ethernet and AC to wireless on battery OR wireless on AC switching to unplugged on battery.
When working at home on Belkin little silly thing WPA2, I will get KPs occasionally but less often than at work.

The problem is that I use this laptop for presentations and I get paid to do it. Imagine me standing in front of 100-200 people producing a Kernel Panic and waiting for a reboot for extra extra few minutes. Is Apple going to pick up the bill for the lost minutes for my clients? I am almost terrified to take it with me on stage because I just don;t know what to expect. A scary feeling...

Aiport Atheros driver causes Kernel Panics as listed in panic.log - all panics are the same according to the footprint of logs.

Fix the bloody driver or change the piece of hardware to the one that works with it. It's that simple. There has to be an official response and the Geniuses shouldn't be so surprised when confronted with that problem.

In all my years on PowerMac G5 I've experienced perhaps one single KP and on a brand new MBP - over 15 in the past 3 weeks.

leopard seed

I wonder if the leopard seed addresses this driver issue. has anyone given that a try?

same problem it only happens on a 2wire wireless and not my airport extreme. I had kernal panics on both new macbook 2.16 and my macbook pro 2.2

So this has been a problem for me too guys, I got a new MB less than a month ago, and within the first week I started getting kernel panics and loss of wireless. I reinstalled the OS and didn't run any third party software, I was still getting them once or twice a day. I was on four different routers (non-apple) for my work, and the kernel panic came being connected to at least three of them.

Someone happened to have a apple router lying around and hooked it up, and I haven't had any problems all morning. On the old one I'd loose wireless connection withing 15 minutes. Strange eh? Some kind of new bundling strategy from Apple?

I've already got a replacement on the way, so it'll be interesting to see if the new one acts the same way. In the meantime the apple router seems to be doing the trick.

Macbook kernel panics with non-Apple routers

Bought new MB 2.16 120HD three days ago and had 4 kernel panics within first 24 hours of use. I thought that it was the MS Office 2004 software (designed for powerpc chip) but even after uninstalling that I had another kernel panic while surfing the web. I was online during all 4 KPs using a 2Wire router. Once I discovered this forum I mentioned the problem to a room-mate who then hooked up an Apple Airport router and since using the Apple router I have not had a kernel panic.

If everyone calls Apple with their problem they will have to do something about it, i.e., replace or fix our Atheros drivers. They are selling defective equipement and there are Lemon Laws.

In the meantime warn people not to buy the new Macbooks if they want to connect to non-Apple routers. Tell EVERYONE.

I have returned my SR MBP, as it was just out of control. Couldn't do it instore because it was a custom made product, and Apple's phone support bounced me to 6 or 7 people before anyone could initiate an exchange. Well, my SR MBP shipped out June 28 and made it to apple this morning, so I'm assuming my new one will ship out tonite/tomorrow from China or California (who knows...). At the very least they gave me 2-day shipping.

Anyway, I'm still going to try it on my 2Wire Router, but I'm starting to think that this is the issue. Unfortunately I can't switch router's and still have a functional AT&T Homezone receiver... oh well. I'll post when I get the new MBP if it does/doesn't have problems.

Just bringing you up to date---when I went to San Diego, and tried wireless on battery with my Linksys WRT54G router I didn't have a single kernel panic! I even let the machine run all the way down to calibrate the battery. It slept, and I was able to wake it up with no problem. When I returned to Mexico, I did have a message on my answering machine from my apple tech saying that they are aware of the incompatibility of the 2Wire modems, and that they are working on a fix--but he did not say how long it would be....:(

Well, now I'm pissed.

The one they had ready to ship for me... was cancelled this morning after they received my return. And then they ordered another one.

So, all they did was move my ship date from July 6th to July 16th.

Thanks Apple, calling tomorrow to sort this out. If this doesnt have anything to do with a recall, or some mega-update, I'm cancelling and demanding a full refund. I'm so frustrated, being without my laptop for nearly 30 days when its all said and done.

I knew I should have just gotten a stock model. Stupid me, for thinking Apple wouldn't drop the ball... PC's are tempting me back.
------------------------------
EDIT: Apple just shipped my MBP 10 days ahead of schedule. Maybe the Apple Gods heard me.

I just want to update everyone that since I switched to an Apple Airport router I have not had a single kernel panic on my Macbook and absolutely no dropped connections. It should be noted that my first router was a 2Wire router and I had 4 kernel panics in the first 24 hours after opening the Macbook.

Smooth as silk on the Apple Airport router. 36+ hours of non-dropped service with no KPs.

MacBook Crashes

I am new to using a mac, a month or so. Since the last upgrade dropped wireless connections and crashes have become routine. I also have the ATT/2WIRE.
I am relieved that I am not alone in this problem, I will print out this thread so that the apple genius can not tell me he has not heard of this problem before.
So far I have had more crashes on a mac than my PC, which is why I changed to begin with!
