Of course, the problem with these profiles is that most of them turn blues really, really purple. The problem is that the "blue" on these profiles is so far from sRGB blue that the transform introduces a lot of red. If you want to really see it, switch the display profile first, and then open up a color picker and set it to pure blue. It'll be purple under most of these profiles.

An easy way to get a color picker is with TextEdit. Open it and press ⌘⇧C, then click the second tab on the color picker. Choose RGB sliders (⌘2) and crank up the blue (the bottom one) all the way, while lowering the other two. With the MBP200815 Native, for example, it'll be quite purple. Quit TextEdit, change back to the default Color LCD profile, and try it again. It'll be blue.

That's not a big deal for some people, but it's always really bothered me to have such inaccurate blues.

MBP 15" 9C85 Profiles

Here are three more of mine. Done with a different MBP with the 9C85 display, gamma of 2.2, and white points of native and 6500K and gamma of 1.8 done at native white point. I would recommend the native white point with gamma 2.2 one, it's what I use.

These were done with an x-rite eye one 2 hardware calibrator and Coloreyes Display Pro software.

could you comment on screen quality between the 9C84 vs 98C5 when both are calibrated?

I only did it briefly, but I'd say that when calibrated you would need them literally next to each other to see much difference. Both are really excellent. I've only had the 9c85 to look at for a couple of hours so far.

It's a big difference compared to the previous 15" where there where obvious differences between the manufacturers screens. Both are these are good enough that I wouldn't worry about which one I got (FYI, the 9c84 is on a stock 2.53GHz, the 9c85 is on a 2.8GHz SSD).

I had both - the 9C84 on a 2.53ghz model and the 9C85 on a 2.8ghz model - the 9C84 was considerably better than the 85, with the 85 being much more yellow even after calibration.

I've got a replacement on the way - will report back if this one is a one off.

Your 2.8 with the 9C85 panel must have been a lemon. I went thru THREE 2.4's with the 9C84 panel and two out of the three looked great; one of them looked a bit washed out. My fourth 2.4 has the 9C85 panel and it looks the BEST, IMO. Amazing color detail and no yellow tint at all (except from extreme side-angle viewing which is normal for all panels). Blacks are black and whites are white. It is THE best screen I have ever had in a notebook, hands down, don't give a fudge what anyone else says. BOO YAH!

Good to know - I'm really hoping the replacement is better. I've grown used to this one now, but when I had both the 9C84/85 and compared them side-by-side there was a clear difference. Fingers crossed...

ok now i am really curious and perplexed...

my original color lcd file says i have a 9C84 pannel so when i enable this profile everything looks so washed out.

so now i DL... bcaslis 9C84 Native profile for the 9C84 pannel... and no doubt it looks much better... however when i go lagom.nl lcd test and strip the color profile and check out the lcd patterns... i noticed color bands bleed near the top end (last two slots) and that my whites are too much...

so now for fun... i DL bcaslis 9C85 Native profile and no doubt... my pannel now has correct whites (i can see all of them) and my entire color band is perfect as well as my blacks and gamma... its insane...

my question is can someone actually upload the original Color LCD file for the 9C85 pannel? I wanna just see how the original works on my machine... and is it possilbe I may have gotten the wrong file orginaly from the factory?

I've uploaded my original (shipped) 9C85 profile here:

Factory 9C85

which I find far too yellow (on my display anyway!) I've also put my calibrated version here:

TWynne 9C85

If anyone bothers to try these I'd love to hear your results.

Cheers,

Tom

Hey Tom,

I just downloaded both your factory and your calibrated files...

your factory file for some odd reason looks fantastic on my display. its warmer but by no means is it yellow on my display... compared to my factory file and your factory file... i would definitely choose yours over mine... based on my display... my file produced washed out bright colors where as yours actually gave a little life to my colors and toned down the brightness...

your calibrated file unfourtinitly looks horrible on my screen... colors are off and its way too cool...

from what i have seen so far... on my display which is a 9C84 that looked too bright and washed out originally, that the Color LCD file for the 9C85 panel just makes my display come back to life and further it meets all the requirements found under the lagom.nl lcd test pages (except for the white box text and gamma looks to be off for one color)... further bcaslis calibrated file is tad cooler than the original Color LCD file for the 9C85 and meets the white box test and looks pretty good for gamma as well...

i honestly dont get it...

Thanks - I find the standard one makes greys look to beige. Guess it's somewhat a matter of personal preference! :D

Cheers for the response anyway!

The Native 2.2 one here is quite good and very close to the one I've chosen to use temporarily, but not quite it.

I agree with the previous comments; neither were close for my 85 panel.

The one I'm using was posted earlier in the thread. I also have a Spyder3Elite but due to the profiles here, I've determined my hardware isn't giving me a true neutral... I've opened a support ticket and will hopefully get it returned.

This is the one I picked (and a few others have agreed I think)

Well, keep in mind that individual variations in panels can make a difference in color. The only way to really get an accurate color is to calibrate for your individual panel. The calibrations for my panels may or may not match someone else. The same thing applies to the default profiles. There are set for some norm, but any individual panel could be a little or a lot off of the default.

Ah, but it's not useless. Explain that by having a correctly calibrated screen you will attain color happiness which will insure a happier existence for you both! ;)

Probably won't work but it's worth a shot! :D

dr. shdw, thank you for your profile.

My screen seemed a bit yellow, looks a lot better now!

How to change profile file?

For those who don't know how to use the .icc files posted here: copy them to your ~/Library/ColorSync/Profiles/ directory, then pick the profile in Preferences under Displays->Color.

Thank you bcaslis. I am using your native profile on my Mac now. It could all be subjective to individual screens but yours looks the best for me. Not too yellow and not too gloomy and dark.

Just got my new MBP yesterday, and I notice the colours in album artwor, don't look half as good as the did on my old monitor ( which was a LCD TV ). Is there anyway I can change the settings of this without spending over £70 on a good calibrator?... kinda disappointed on the colour reproduction :(

My screen is a 9C84, here is mine calibrated with an Eye one, at I think 2.0 Gamma
Hi Star-fire, i have tried all the profiles here on my 9C84, yours look best to me while performed impressively in the LCD test's criterias: http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/
Except for the sharpness criteria and white saturation criteria which, although still outperform other profiles, still not showing the last 2 boxes, could you upload another profile with gamma 2.2 for us to see if it nails this criteria as well?
Tks a lot

btw, dr.shdw's profile was my favourite however it's a bit too bright to pass the lcd test.
bcaslis' native one is quite good but put my ical's blue tasks into purple, also front row's first icon turns purple as well.
