New MBP Owners (since 8/13/07), Do You Have The Bottom 3rd Yellowing Issue?

My current samsung not only has yellowing, but it has very uneven lighting on the bottom where the yellow is. it's kind of wavy looking down there. with lower brightness, the whole screen is very yellow, even though I calibrated it to be very white (very cold and blue). before calibration it was all very yellow.

Wow, the yellowing is still there. I lucked out on my first replacement a LG crisp white screen, I am amazed to see the same issue still here

Just received my MBP after a screen replacement.

I took it to the Apple Store two weeks ago, a couple of days after, they call me to inform me that the new screen is "defect" so I wait for a week and a half before they call me back. Today I go to the Apple Store and my new screen (still a Samsung) also have the exact same yellowing (also, the screen is not centered on the MBP, but that i can live with it).

So tomorrow I am going back for an exchange with all the stuff who came in the box. (They already know).

If I receive another yellow screen from an all new MBP, I think I will contact a journalist about this (the local tv network have a show that do these kinds of stuff, usually it make thing move, last year they made a report about the RING OF DEATH on the Xbox 360). Because Apple cannot offer screen this bad for a computer that is already a lot pricier than other equivalent laptop from DELL or HP.

I think this is the best course of action at this point. Apple is obviously lacking the motivation to fix this problem themselves. Maybe we have to give them some incentive by making it a media issue.

I look forward to hearing if your brand new MBP has yellowing. My fingers are crossed for ya.

I could cry...

Hi guys,

I am a student from Germany and ordered my MBP 3 weeks ago over the Internet (we have no apple stores here). Yesterday I finally received it and the darn thing still has this "Yellowing Issue". Specs: 2,2 ghz, 160gigs, glossy display, build week 38 and a Samsung screen.

Why doesn't Apple do anything. This seems to be an old problem.

Today I called Apple and they will exchange it (pick it up and deliver a new one). I hope that I'll get a LG display otherwise I'll just get my money back and wait till the problem is fixed ?

Where's my beer? I need to calm down ;)

Making people that upset sounds like another company I was hoping to get away with. :( Sorry to hear your problems. I am on #2 here, it's on its way. I should be excited but I am full of dread.

Edit:

Actually this will be #3.
#1 came from Apple Store online. #2 was my "I will only open one for you" in store.

after waiting for about a week, my new display just arrived in apple store for replacing, and they call me to drop off my laptop ... I took my laptop to the store again, and they took a look at it AGAIN ! (no need to mention that I explained the whole story to the tech support many times, as well as genius guys!)

look what they described as an issue ...

lol ... the iPhoto part is so funny :D
1/3 ... 1/3 ... not 1/8 :D
I hope they replace it with a good one this time

I would like to know, is this a pretty wide spread problem, or is it pretty isolated?

I plan on ordering mine next month when leopard is released, and I will raise hell if this happens. I'm paying a lot of money for this, and I expect quality.

That's what all of us expected, quality ... and we paid a lot of money too ... I, personally, am not satisfied with their tech support and their return policy. I wasted my time a lot going back and forth to the store, or even on the phone.

Just make sure that they let you to open it in store and take a look at it, and if you do have that yellowish problem at the bottom (not the yellowish cast when you look at it from the sides, that's the nature of the product) take it back right a way. My suggestion would be, just talk to the manager, not the genius guys! and don't forget, as soon as you take it home .... you know the rest of the story :D

I don't know if I said this, but I'm ordering it online and having it delivered to my parents house (I'm a college student who lives in an appartment). However, I do have an AppleStore about 15 minutes from my appartment. I can still take it there to raise the flames from beneath us, correct? Hopefully by the time Leopard comes out, they will have their issue corrected or a refresh will be out by that time?

From what I have understand so far, if you buy it online, it's kind of hard to deal with the stores. Even if you buy it from a certain store, you need to take it back to that specific store, eventhough the genius guy would tell you that you could do that in any other store (as I was told). If there is one near your apartment, I would buy from them. I bought my macbook pro from another state ( I went there for weekend), and when I came back to my town, they kinda wanted/preferred/encouraged (you name it :D ) me to go back to that apple store, and I ended up with passing the 14 days return policy and a repaired laptop instead of replacement!

I changed to a glossy screen from a matte screen, for whatever reason that made it a "Custom Configuration". If the model number in store doesn't match yours they will not want to exchange it. A matte screen bought online with default everything should have no issue being exchanged in a physical Apple Store and will have the highest chance of being defect-free. It's still up to the store. Talk to a manager if there is any problem, the genious I spoke with balked at any return saying it was "within spec".

BTW, Apple online CS has been fantastic. Kudos to them.

After a week dealing with apple on my yellowing samsung glossy week 36

mbp(online store,received in 9-05). Finally AppleCare told the store(apple

authorized reseller) to replace my display although the store insist on

my screen is nothing wrong. Feel so tired .... But calling applecare really

helps. Now , what i am worry abt is my next display ..... if they ordered it

today, it probably will be a week 39 or 40 display ,will it get over the yellowing ?

Since most yellowing display are glossy, And most glossy are made by

samsung. i really hope my next one can be a LG. How often will people get a

glossy LG ?

#If someone get their week 39 glossy mbp, plz tell me if it is yellow or not

and which manufacturer u get.

Mine doesn't have the yellowing issue or any other issue. Besides the minor uneveness when it's closed. People only complain when they're something wrong and all the ones that are fine don't post. So reading about it on here gives you a sckewed view.

Yeah, it's really freaking me out reading this thread, but you're right. I think I may have to stop frequent here before I totally decide to change my mind about getting a MBP. I'm really anal about perfection. I can let minor things slide, but screen defects are a no no with me, since they rarely ever get better.

And the reason I don't want to order from an AppleStore is tax. I believe if I order it online, as long as Apple doesn't have their warehouse in my state, I don't get taxed, which saves me about 100-150 bucks in that aspect. And as long as Apple honors their warranty to its fullest extent, I don't mind having to ship it back.

I also suffer from this problem. It looks like the whole bottom half of my screen is darker/yellow than the top. These kind of wide spread defects deserve a CALLBACK!! It's my first apple computer. I totally lose the confidence in this company.

You will pay sales tax on your MBP if Apple has "nexus" or a physical presence in your state. A physical presence could be a warehouse, corporate offices or Apple retail stores.

Hi caoxiang,

sadly it was also my first :apple: experience. Lets see if Apple will deliver the new MBP with a better/non-yellowish display (mine was a week 38 build and still yellowish = wtf; I have this weird feeling that the replacement will also be yellow ). I really wonder how many new LED displays have this problems (the techguy on the phone knew the problem all too well). Guess only Apple knows and they surely won't tell.

Probably a lot of people do not really notice the yellowish display and blame it on their eyes or other factors. I have heard a lot of good things about Apple but this old MBP problem is really a ripoff. True to the maxim: "Maybe the customer won't notice..."

Other than that the MBP is probably the best notebook in its class...

Greetings from Germany
Pat

P.S. I just got an email confirming the replacement: delivery date 12.-18 Oct. :( ... I ordered my first yellowish MBP on 5th Sept... this is getting really annoying.

Yellowing issue seems to be almost all Samsung!!

From reading this thread, I have gathered that this problem is directly tied to Samsung LCDs. This is shameful because Samsung is leading the way in LCD quality and technology.

I'm right behind you PatHH. I ordered my MBP on September 7 and I'm waiting for my replacement e-mail confirmation from AppleCare, which I should get by today. I guess I won't be seeing my replacement until mid-October.

Since you only have 30 days to send in the Major in Mac rebate forms, I wonder how Apple will handle my rebate submission since I'm not removing the UPC labels until after I have a MBP with a good screen.

The 14 days return policy is only important if you want to get a refund or if you want to change model.

From what the guys at the Apple Store explained to me (my MBP was bought in mid-august), after 14 days, they can only repair the screen or give me a new MBP from the same model (I asked if I could get an equivalent priced iMac).

You can replace it as long as it is on warranty. (at least for the yellowing issue).

Also, it's true that they can't directly exchange it from an Apple Store if you bought online, but they can (and that's what i am doing, since i'm in the same "student appartment" situation than Flashing Fi) take care of the online applecare exchange for you. It means that they will not be able to give you a MBP they have in-store, but you can give them your defect MBP, they will send it to Applecare and command a new one from them. I think it is probably faster than calling Applecare since the defect unit is coming from an AppleStore and has been already been identified as a defect from a genius and Applecare don't have necessarily to wait for your MBP to come in to send you a replacement.

I'll be calling fedex later today and having them come pick up this samsung week 38 out, It is very annoying and disappointing... hopefully the replacement will be better....

I just wanted to give my input, I have a week 34 MBP, that I received at the end of August. The bottom of the screen has the yellowing, there is "dirt" behind the screen also. It's a Samsung, the top lid is pretty warped, AND the Y key only wants to work half of the time. Needless to say Apple has a new MBP coming my way, the online personnel have been nothing but great. I was able to sign a contract that says I'll return my current MBP with 30 days of receiving the new one or I'll be charged $1999. Very fair in my opinion.

I'm getting the student discount, and my school only offers me the option to buy it online, and I want the 160 gig HDD instead of 120.
