Hmm

I'm kinda confused about what exactly I should see or shouldn't see when looking at the pictures. I must be a dumb ass.

SR MBP 17" 2.4, 2 GIG, GLOSSY
shipped Aug 30 arrived Sept 4, purchased from Apple Online Store

Manufacturer: 00000610
Model: 00009C69
Serial 00000000
Manufacturer Date: C23F3280

I have looked at both pictures, I applied the black ne to my desktop and both little boxes looked white. When it same the the gray one, the gray changed a little to the side and the small white squares looked white but changed slightly compared to the black picture.

IM me or whatever I want to know whats up! I also noticed the model was one number higher than what I saw being posted here so please weigh in, I would love to know so I can figure out what to do or what not to do.

***Originally the gray picture wasn't applying to my desktop, it finally worked and when I look at the side the gray and white squares kinda get washed out but I think it may be just the fact its an LCD screen, but for the most part the squares are pretty white.***

Result:

1st Macbookpro openend: DOA (Dead on Arrival, did not boot up)
2nd Macbook pro openend: seemed fine, but one of the keys on the keyboard did not function 100%.
3nd Macbook Pro: samsung with strong Yellowing at bottom
4th Macbook pro: Yes.. LG... but wait: there's a nasty grey colouring at the bottom (looks likes the display being scratched). For a 500 euro laptop, that's fine. But not for an so called 'PRO' machine. Sorry Jobs, really lost my patience here !

Similar thing happened to me. I'm on my third MBP (first two returned for yellow screens and a popping sound). Now only a month into use the third MBP's fans are starting to make a low whirring/buzzing sound after intensive tasks. This is my first experience with Macs and I have to say I'm REALLY disappointed with Apple's hardware quality. Its one redeeming grace is OS X, but I'm not sure even that is worth all this trouble. Still have not decided whether to send it in for repairs or ask for a full refund. Either way, I'm definitely letting Apple know how disappointed I am.

Really a pitty this happens to you after you bought yours ! Hope you can still get a full refund, and wait for new future (improved?) MB PRO models ?

2 days later I can tell you I am really excited with my simple, cheaper Macbook. Connected it already to my Philips WS200 (1680x1050) and everything worked extremely smooth.

Since I don't play games, I really don't care about the videocard anymore.

I don't know exactly, but the MB pro feels like a great margin product to milk Apple customers of every penny they could spend on Apple gear.

Apple looks like Starbucks or any cofee shop with regards to pricing strategy. For ±2.50 euros you get a great cofee at Starbucks. But if you spend a few euros more your glass gets bigger (not really a cost to Starbucks), and/or they replace / add a few ingredients which is almost no cost per glass, but ads great margin.

If Apple is still aiming at a niche market, customers might be forgiving. But if their goal is to improve marketshare and sell into new segments / markets, they better solve quality issues sooner then later.

I have a week 30 LG display. It's actually brighter on the bottom half than the top half. It's not a problem, but when you use the test images it's visible. Otherwise I deemed it good enough to keep. Does anyone else have a MPB display with the same issue?

You don't have a screen with LED backlighting...so this thread is most likely not even applicable to you. :)

In your case you probably just have backlight leakage near the bottom of your screen. (which is pretty common among all LCD screens and deemed "within specs" as long as its not something super extreme)

I don't think so. I've seen backlight leakage, and this isn't it. The bottom half is just brighter. Even though it seems quite evenly lit in normal use. Very subtle, but still it's there. And it's strange since it's the opposite of the problem that everyone else describe (with the darker bottoms).

Thanks, and I'm glad you're enjoying your Macbook!

Yellowing Issues with MBP's From Amazon?

Did anybody here having yellowing problems with their MBP's buy their macs from Amazon? How did you go about exchanging it? When did you order yours and what was the build week?

I'm asking because I'm about to buy a 15" MBP (not decided on the low-tier or the mid). And I don't think I should have to buy one from an Apple store, have to pay the taxes and lose the $150 Amazon rebate, just so I can play the LED LCD screen lottery. I mean, this problem have been going on for months! I don't know why Apple haven't fixed it yet.

After 4 attempts and over a month, I finally received an LG on my MBP week 41. Slight backlight bleed on the bottom (1/4"), but no yellowing. Screen closes pretty flush as well. Only thing I noticed is it seems the Samsung opened to a wider angle than the LG.

good to hear. i am going to get my 3rd one on wednesday, hopefully i won't have to go for a 4th. i don't really care much about backlight bleeding, as long as i can view white websites as being white....

Good to hear you finally got the LG.:D How was it feel when you unbox the replacement everytime? It was a nearly a heart attack incident for me.
I've got LG for 1st replacement with a dead pixel. Took that anyway. Can't afford another heart attack attempt.
I wonder did your LG MBP also comes with LG superdrive?

I returend my LG for the backlight bleed - bothered me when watching
letterbox movies. Replacement was a Samsung - returned that for the
yellowing. Now I'm waiting for leopeard before trying for one
last replacement. I'll probably just live with whatever I get next go
around or return and wait for Penryn.

I have the opportunity to purchase a 15.4" Non-LED Macbook Pro (2.33 Core 2, 2gb ram, x1600 256mb) for about the same price as the LED models.

Would it be worth it to do so if I don't need the 8600GT? I'm afraid of getting a yellow unit :(

Noooooooooo!!!

Received my lovely new MBP today, or at least I though until I took a closer look at the screen. The bottom 1/3 is obviously yellow. I opened the test posted at the begining of the thread. It is really obvious, on the black / white test the black suddenly changes colour 2/3 of the way down and the bottom square is very yellow.

It also appears that I have backlight bleed ( is this also a common attribute of the problem?) with the screen having a glowing white area along the top and things looking washed out/uneven. I really didnt think it would be that bad and I certainly didn't think it would happen to me - Anoyed isnt the word!

If anyone has any questions i.e. screen manufacturer etc, I am willing to post anything that will be helpfull.

Suppose I will be on the phone to Apple tommorow - can anyone tell me of their experiences of getting the problem fixed i.e. am I going to have a hard time getting it replaced?

LG screen has cons too!

Hey Everyone, I've been reading this board every now and then but haven’t made any comments yet on my experiences. I bought a week 29 MPB back in August and it had a Samsung screen with some 1/3rd yellowing. Because of reading this forum, I decided to get it replaced. Apple was kind enough to send me another one right away and let me keep my old machine for 30 days. The new machine was a week 39 and had an LG display with very nice whites and no yellowing. However, one thing I instantly noticed was that the LG screen had more of a grainy pixely sparkly look to it. I ran several LCD tests on the LG and spent a lot of time using it and I found the grainy look to be way to distracting. The grain problem of the previous generation MacBook Pros was the reason I waited for the LED models. My Samsung screen MBP had virtually no grain. Over the last few weeks I've probably seen about 18-20 MPBs in retails stores and from friends and have determined that the grainy artifacts on the LG screen seem to be normal (at least for recent builds). Not only this but the LG screen also had a very very subtle quiver on some gradients; also the backlight bleed on the bottom 1/4 inch.

If you have an LG screen try looking at a solid green screen (RGB: 0,255,0) and you'll see what I mean about the quiver. Or, take a look at this excellent site:

http://www.lagom.nl/lcd-test/

Anyway, it was a very hard decision but I found the Samsung screen to be much easier on my eyes and looked generally much better aside from the 1/3 yellowing. Both screens definitely had their cons and it was a hard decision but I decided to keep my Samsung MBP. I can live with some minor yellowing, but grain I find unacceptable. Thus, I am sending back my new LG machine.

Im sure there are some "PERFECT" LG screens out there, but like another wrote, I think I've seen a fair sampling of both screens and have made my decision on what I think is better.

One last thing I have to say is that I'm kind of disappointed in some of the people on this forum that claim that the LG screen is the greatest screen and that its leagues better then the Samsung. There are definitely pros and cons to both.

Wow, I really can't believe these problems are still be going on...must be cheaper for apple to just deal with angry customers than actually fix the problem.

sending it back...

I decided I wasn't happy and definitely didn't want a repaired product after spending that amount of money, so Apple is sending someone to come and take it away again.

And why is it that everyone I talk to at Apple denies that the problem exists?

By the way, I have just finished over 3 hours on the phone to Apple... so frustrating!! Especially when they put you through to other people, just when I had finished explaining my problem to one person they suggest I talk to someone else who then asks what the problem is, except they have absolutely no technical knowledge whatsoever...

the guy said, what is the problem... so I said I had a yellow screen... he said... ah ok, if you are not happy with a yellow one we do a white and black one you can replace it with as you are within 14 days...

Ahhhhhhhh!!! Take it away, just take it away apple please.

Repaced my samsung with another problem samsung screen

I just got my week 36 mbp (glossy samsung) display replaced today with another samsung. The yewllowing issue is still there and even worse is my 1st samsung just has 1/3 of screen is yellowing, this one has 1/2 yellowing~( maybe i am subjective, but the new one's also looks like wash out color compare to my first samsung), I really want them to replace back to my old screen, but couldn't . Should i ask apple to replace my screen again ? Or just wait untill they have fixed the problem. Anyone has problem for requesting for second replacement or repaired ?

Both screen has the same info. ( the new one's product num is 661-4343 )

Manufacturer: 00000610

Pennymac--
If you got it replaced and your NOT happy with it send it back and make sure your satisfied- WHY would you say okay to something that isnt worth your money, I got a defective screen and sent it back, you know. so dont settle.

Wow three hours, I would have hung up, thats ridiculous, they should already know before transferring you around, the whole story. You need to let them know your disappointed with their level of service and that they're not selling what they should be selling- yellow screen option isnt a choice when you make a purchase...Sorry to hear your irritation, Im on replacement two and Im pretty pissed with the whole situation....

I just really hope that ppl can tell the difference between the 1/3 yellow issue and the NORMAL yellow that is observed on 6-bit panels when you look at it on an angle, especially on the horizontal plane. I've talked to a few people who completely misunderstand the issue. One person thought it meant that it's 1/3 yellower when you look from different angles. If someone thinks that's the case, he or she will exchange their MBPs indefinitely without success!

Any refurbs with yellow screens?

Has anyone received a refurb with a yellow screen?

I have this theory that since refurbs go through Apple's cleaning/inspection process that they are better checked out than new machines.

I can dream, right?

I went through two MBP's with yellow screens before I returned it. I then bought a 15" T61P (which came with an LG screen) and the thing was piss poor at color reproduction. A color spectrum looked like absolute crap. So I returned that and I'm going to be buying a MBP again. If it was a toss up between the mbp yellow samsung or the thinkpad lg, I would take the samsung in a heartbeat.

Exactly how I feel, to me the yellow tint on the bottom is very normal. I guess were not used to it and the older ccfl backlighting gives a bluish tint to it which is harder to make out as to the yellow. I remember the last glossy samsung I had while it was slight slight yellow tint towards the bottom it was still hardly noticable and the colors were bad ass...

I bought a brand new 15.4" Glossy Macbook Pro from an Apple Retail store. I got home, turned it on and found a perfect LG screen with no yellowing at the bottom!

But, I noticed one stuck pixel on the bottom left hand side :( I tried running a stuck pixel video file but this morning it was still there.

Oh well at least I don't have the yellowing
