MacHiavelli: No, the 17" displays do not have this problem because they are not LED displays.
I just received my replacement MBP and it also has the 1/3 Yellowing Issue(even worse than the first MBP). The replacement is a week 39 Samsung display. Called the (german) Apple Online store and told them about the problem. They couldn't really help me ("We can send you another one?!"). GREAT! Let us continue playing this lottery game.
I am fed up with this display issue. I am now getting my money back. Maybe I will come back later when this issue is finally fixed! Too bad that my first Apple experience was not a good one. I chose Apple because of their "quality" laptops. Sorry to say it, but I feel that -concerning the new LED MBPs- it was the wrong decision.
what week is your MBpro manufactured?LG owners, are you sure there is absolutely no yellowing at all on the bottom? because my LG still has a bit of yellow, but nowhere near as bad as my last 2 samsungs. there is no backlight inconsistencies and it doesn't look all wavy. also it isn't really sparkly on the bottom.
the problem is definitely more obvious with lower brightness. with max brightness it is almost perfect. i have to try really hard to notice it then. i can really only see it on the squares picture or on a totally white screen.
maybe i am just really sensitive to this, or i am just so incredibly unlucky that when i finally got an LG it also has the problem? maybe i just have to get used to white webpages looking a bit creamy?![]()
it's probably because i'm coming from an incredible Sony trinitron CRT that i've used for 10 years now.... i haven't seen a display that's looked better. i just have high standards I guess...
anyway, i think it is acceptable, but i just don't know.....
oh yeah, and it did come really really washed out, but i used supercal to calibrate it, and the colors look so much better and richer. if anyone has the washed out problem with their LG, definitely get supercal.

Arrived half an hour ago. IT'S PERFECT. Okay, so there's some backlight bleed, but wow! What a relief.
I received my replacement 3rd machine (1st LG horrible
backlight bleed @bottom, 2nd samsung yellow bottom 1/3).
This 3rd one is a Week 42, Matte, Samsung
This one has about 1-2mm bleed on top and bottom (within
spec), has a little more even backlighting than my last
samsung). It has bottom 1/3 yellowing, but very subtle,
even less than my last samsung and nothing like the
really bad piss yellow screens I've seen on early build SR Samsungs.
As with all of the LED backlight machines I've had (even the LG)
there is a bit of 'yellow push' to the whites.
I've calibrated myself with supercal and tried just about
every profile posted. So far, I like this profile the best
for a cooler white with less noticeable patches of yellow coming through:

This is at the expense of some color vibrancy (some profiles
had much better colors) and there is a pretty steep gradient
in the greens, but I like the whites better.
If anyone has a better Samsung color profile, please post.
Overall, the rest of machine is ok. I'm going to give this
machine a week and see how it goes. I'm leaning towards
keeping this one. I just don't have the time anymore
to deal with support, replacement, reloading software, etc, etc
and think this is about as good as it gets in terms of
backlight bleed (better than LG I had), colors (better
than the washed out LG), and bottom 1/3rd yellowing
(better than the last samsung I had).
The only alternative I'd consider now is to wait for penryn in January,
but I really don't want to wait that long and limp along with my g4.
This whole experience has been a pain, but on the upside,
I am now eligible to get Leopard for $10.
Good luck to everyone!

I bought a new macbook pro today. How can you see if it has bleeding of the backlight? Thanks
