Just recived my MBP.

The screen has yellow 1/3 and is also fairly dim even at max brightness. It has inconsistent backlight with the top part the brightest and the bottom part the dimmest. I tried calibrating it but you just cant get away from the very visible yellowing and uneven backlight.

Model: Matte 9C6D (?)
Ordered from Apple Website on the 15 October.

:'(

There is a program called SwitchResX that you can
use to dump the screen info. There is details on this
in the original bottom yellow 1/3 thread starting
at page 7, with most details and link to program on page 8:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/313239/

Try and see if you can get "Descriptor #2 is ASCII data:",
than search for that with google to find the actual manufacturer.
Please let us know what you find out!

Update:

Got a 9c68 Samsung matte SR mbp. Yellowing on bottom 1/3 (see my post above).

Took it back to Arndale Apple Store in Manchester. Took 4 days to 'repair'.

Collected it today with new screen assembly and the same problem. Again a 9c68. They say because they replace the whole lid they have no way of knowing until they fit it what model of screen it is.

Anyone know if there's any truth to that?

Anyway I put it in for another screen. I asked for the problem to be fixed, not to get a new screen. There's a difference.

I have a yellowed 9C6D and am still trying to figure out which of the two the 9C6D is, Samsung or LG...maybe it's neither.

It really sucks that Apple hasn't eliminated this problem by now. With Leopard coming out tomorrow, I want to buy a new MBP. This is the only hold-up. I hate having to return things to the Apple Store. Waiting in line for a "Genius" and the stress of hoping that they see the problem and agree to fix it is just too much to knowingly encounter.

Unless there is some indication that newer batches do not exhibit this problem, I may not buy a MBP until the next revision.

Darn it.

I bought a Macbook Pro 2.4 when they first came out. I took it back 3 times for yellow screen and then gave up and bought a macbook. I was very satisfied with the mackbook (well after returning two for stuck space bar and warped hinges). Anyways just two days ago I broke down and bought a macbook pro 2.2 hoping against all hope I would get the LG screen and a good one. I got lucky and did. Screen is great. No yellow no dead pixels. Maybe just a touch of bleed at the bottom but its fine. I know the prolems with getting it exchanged. I told my Apple Store genius I don;t make them so it s not my fault. Good luck!!

like a Seinfeld rerun?

flawless...u gotta love the new china.

i guess i don't see how any all of these posts will be used as something conclusive, or is it just an endless stream of defects or questions about defects or about absolutely nothing at all, like a Seinfeld rerun?
cheers!

Yup, I just got mine today and It was horrible not only had 1/3 yellow but had a bright white spot in upper left corner. I'm returning and hoping for a better one, I'm so mad I won't have it for launch tomorrow.

LG owners, are you sure there is absolutely no yellowing at all on the bottom? because my LG still has a bit of yellow, but nowhere near as bad as my last 2 samsungs. there is no backlight inconsistencies and it doesn't look all wavy. also it isn't really sparkly on the bottom.

the problem is definitely more obvious with lower brightness. with max brightness it is almost perfect. i have to try really hard to notice it then. i can really only see it on the squares picture or on a totally white screen.

maybe i am just really sensitive to this, or i am just so incredibly unlucky that when i finally got an LG it also has the problem? maybe i just have to get used to white webpages looking a bit creamy? :)

it's probably because i'm coming from an incredible Sony trinitron CRT that i've used for 10 years now.... i haven't seen a display that's looked better. i just have high standards I guess...

anyway, i think it is acceptable, but i just don't know.....

oh yeah, and it did come really really washed out, but i used supercal to calibrate it, and the colors look so much better and richer. if anyone has the washed out problem with their LG, definitely get supercal.

Nope my 2one was perfect not a tinge of yellow at all :)

I wish I could just return my Macbook Pro and get a Macbook but sadly mine is configured with the 7200rpm harddrive so no go. I'm stuck in return-land until I get one that isn't pee colored.

Hmmm..i messed with settings and now its harder to see yellow. I even ran a movie and the uneveness didn't convey. If the screen had issues wouldn't I see it in a movie?

No idea what that means

Hmmm, if that is the supplier, I'm wondering if the yellowish tint i was seeing may be due to setting or ambient light, if they're a white LED backlight there wouldn't be another reason for yellow. I may keep this one

I had my share of yellow tint displays, and I doubt its ambient light settings since I dont use it. Its to sensitive for me to use it daily all the time. The problem as to why there is a yellow tint has been discussed on these forums maybe even this thread.

People believe it has to do with everything from yellow tape to verify whether the display has been opened to installation of the led lights and what they are manufactured with phosphorus or something and not being true white led and therefore cheaper to manufacture to the ambient light theory of yours. I personally believe that its cheap non-true white led that are being used and some trick is being used to make it white, and unfortunately it being very easy to do it wrong (or even worse, hard to do it right) so that the we get yellow tint screens.

See my concern is that mine isn't really noticable right now, so I wonder if its because I was worried about getting a yellow tint or if it does have issues. I'm worried that I'lll get a Samsung the next time, since I have the 3rd company right now. Gah so confused as to what i should do. The white spot up top doesn't show except on boot up and when I play DVDs to test it the screen is super black. I just don't want to end up with a worse monitor b/c I was hoping for the LG.

If you are pleased with your computer go for it. There is no problem in getting the display repaired/replaced in the future when they hopefully fixed the problems with them if you are bothered by the slight yellowing. If its not that visible (the defects, you cannot get a "perfect" screen unless you are subjective) then it sounds like you got yourself a good screen and a keeper.

Means, if you have trouble in the future with any defect you call Apple Care and through them get it repaired. Refuse the physical apple store unless you bought it from them except for having your laptop repaired there after apple care granted it, better than send it in to some obscure location where you get a horrible flextronics repair.

Gah I am so on the fence, my LED isn't really white white and when it is displayed on a white screen the color isn't really 100% even sort of has slight shadow areas. A co-worker said Apple may not even take it back because it could go either way with how the monitor looks. If you look from any other angle except dead on you can see the shadow areas. GAH. My husband thinks I should try it out in the daylight. Doesn't matter I guess b/c Apple was treating it as damaged during shipping and told me they'd be in contact within 24 hours for an exchange but so far no word. :( Hubby thinks its more of bluish then the greenish/tint I saw but then again, he can't see pink b/c he's color blind LOL

Husband just figured it out, my backlight is inconsistent, the bottom is dimmer then the top, which is why it looks darker. I'm on the phone with Apple now to see if I can ge the display fixed or if I can get a new one. Out of the box, you kinda figure the display will be good, am I right?

You will be able to tell right away, mine was pure white with no issues at all, my friends had the yellow tint and his keyboard was bad, anumber of keys were not working, I hate to say this but I am going back to a macbook, at least for a while :)

Hmm, you got an LG right? I had one of those, a perfect MBP except for the damn screen. Brownish and allot of backlight bleed at the bottom. You might have a Samsung if its only brownish.

Uhhh, what happened to your perfect MBP?
