Well.. I just conducted the same test as shown on this video with Photoshop CS3:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=syrZvxNW0to

It seems all right. It guessed the colours correctly as I zoomed the image and made sure it was at the bottom of the screen.

Still not sure if that's a 100% confirmation of a non yellow screen. Hope so. D:
Is this a valid test? Isn't the Photoshop color palette just reading the pixel information from the display adapter? I don't think it's measuring the color as it appears from the viewer's perspective. I think you need a colorimeter for that.

Apple shall switch back to TFT. Sticking to yellowish LED is environment friendly, however, not user friendly.

I could argue a lot about what you just said but instead I will keep it civil:

Just to clarify: LED is the backlight just as fluorescent lights are (the old technology) and is not the opposite of TFT (which stands for thin film transistor). Apple is still using TFT-LCD displays, they are just backlighted with LED. about TFT

LED has nothing to do with the yellowing issue we see in most Samsung displays in the MBPs. My LG Matte MBP has no issues regarding yellowing which really puts the whole thing back to cheap brand and not the backlight.

So to counterargue: Apple made an environment friendly choice and picked the LED screens but unfortunately cheaped out on the panels from the vendors... :(

yesterday i brought my macbook pro , 1st mac :p , and i think he got the yellow thing:

LED is simply the abbr. of LED TFT, man! My concern is that if it wasn't the new LED technology that introduces the yellowish issue, then what actually causes the problem?:confused:

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but the yellowing should only be considered a problem on your laptop when viewing the screen head on. Color shifts are common in LCDs (yes, even those using CCFL technology) as you change your viewing angle. I even experience this phenomenon on my 24" Dell 2405.

BTW, I just received my 2.4 MBP 15" this morning and I'll be running the yellow test on it after work. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Yes you should only be looking for the yellowing issue when viewing the screen dead-on, and not at an angle.

MBP 2.4 ghz
build week = 42
Samsung - 00009C68

After calibrating I can see that the bottom is only slightly yellow compared to the top when viewed from the side. Like others have said it would be hard to notice if it wasn't for these forums. I had other laptops with light bleeding and worse screens than this.
But I am under my 2 weeks and might just bring it back I thought they would have this issue fixed by now.
Sucks eating a restocking fee thou.

You're right. I don't think it's valid.. considering it was all good with mine yet when you look at it dead on.. there's some definite yellowing.

Why not just try for a replacement?

Exactly what Spliff outlined. I can't afford being without the computer for too long (my only one here). Not to mention, I'm moving states soon.

The laptop itself isn't giving me any problems too - it's perfectly fine. No kernel panics or any abnormal behaviour. (I've actually had it since early September)

Anyhow, one quick look by the Apple repair guy and he says, 'Yup. This is not right. I'm going to order the new part now'. Which is all good by me.

Now, if the problem persists after multiple repairs.. then I'm going to opt for a replacement and definitely raise a storm about it.

I assume that it's unofficial acknowledgement of the yellowish issue. Apple won't officially say "Let's recall the MBP SR 15"!

When I talked to the guy he said it's the first he's ever seen of it.

Mind you - this is an authorized apple repair guy - not an Apple technician itself.

I'm a little pee-d off with my experience so far with this.

This is my 2nd MBP. This one was received by mail (as I thought the fresh off the assembly line MBPs would be rid of this problem, boy was I wrong) and instead of returning and being out a month for a new computer I decided to get this one fixed.

I phoned Apple yesterday and they suggested to do this as it would be a quicker way to have this issue resolved. I agreed and they told me that I can take it to any auth retailer to get it fixed. They suggested a place close by so I agreed and left it at that instead of trying to go for a new one.

I took it today to the auth retailer and they act like this is very uncommon and have never seen it before. I told them how I spoke to Apple and they suggested to take it there. I show them pictures of the images (the ones on the 1st page of this thread) and the salesman said "oh I see what you mean" and takes it into the back for his tech to look at it. He comes back out with this printout of a 17" MBP service advisory from Apple saying that this is something that is acceptable by Apple's standards and that they won't fix it unless I get Apple to call with a reference number indicating that they will indeed replace the item under warranty. I told him that the 17" does not have this issue, only the 15" LEDs and he just shrugged his shoulders and said "he knows" but he can't fix it without the number.

So now I have to get back on the horn with Apple and sit on hold in order to get this number. I am just afraid that the part they send will be another crappy display and have to deal with this whole issue again :(

It is rumored that Apple knows the yellowish issue. That's why I assume that the authorised apple repair guy says so. :p Anyway, as long as he is to fix the screen for you, it's good news. My local service centre once refused to repair the screen for me.

That's terrible Spliff. Here are some sympathies. Hope you can get it resolved as soon as possible.

Aaa.. okies. Yup, it's all good as long as he fixes the screen! He even said to me if the second screen doesn't fix the issue, he'll make another order. Needless to say, I was impressed and happy with the guy I dealt with.

Wow, that sucks that they refused to repair the screen - did you ever get your screen fixed?

I just used the test image attached in this thread and it was pretty prominent.

So i tested my new macbook pro with the test image Jian0001 posted here and low and behold, I have a yellowed screen. :( I was willing to take my chances with my first Mac purchase and i'm kinda disappointed with what i've received. I'm wondering if I should take my chances with another 15" or perhaps just get a 17" (since I was initially considering the 17" as well). Will Apple allow me to return my faulty unit and upgrade to the 17"? I ordered it via online BTW.

That sucks vibe.. I'm not sure how the exchange procedures go - but I'm pretty sure they'd ask for a fee if you wanted to exchange it for the 17".

No, they didn't. My problem is not resolved until I complained directly to an Executive (several levels above Tier-2 agent).

OK so I went to photoshop and made a black background and some white squares. All the squares around half way down are a grey while near the top is bright white. Grr now I am just going to bring this back and wait for the new ones to arrive.
Thanks to this forum for the heads up.I thought I could live with it but being under my 2 weeks bye bye let Steve deal with it.

When i went to buy my Macbook, I mentioned to the Apple rep at the store that I had gone through a couple of MBP that had the yellow issue and he grimaced and said he knows that is why he prefered the Macbook, he said the glossy helps mask the problem but the matte displays the yellow much worse. He was the first Apple person that I have ever had acknowledge the problem.

Glossy 15" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz week 44, Samsung screen: yellowish at the bottom but hardly noticeable and some uneven brightness in 3 different small spots.

Bought on Oct 29, received on Nov 5 2007 from China.

Apple, wake up!

Yes, they will. Do it quickly. Things should be all the more easier if done within the 14-days-return policy.

I called Apple support this morning. Took me 10-15 minutes to talk to a representative. I'm gonna TRY another 15", but if that turns sour as well, I'm either going to upgrade to the 17" or just wait till Macworld in January (even though there's no guarantee of an update then, the chances of one are probably better than me receiving a non defective LCD right now).

Got a new MBP yesterday. LG screen, no yellowing. Week 44. Slightly darker on the bottom of the screen than the top. It's a little grainier than the Samsung or the other manufacturer I had, the GCI or whatever one ends with a D in the item code.

If you do get a yellow one, it's probably better in some respects.

The bottom 1/5th yellow is not as bad as some of the bottom 1/3 yellowing I've seen.

Anyway, my only problem with this machine is the right fan buzzes like a tiny chain saw. Why must there always be one problem?

If possible, check if your bottom 3rd is darker than the rest of the screen. I personally found that bit is quite annoying.
