display repair question

is anyone here try to send their mbp display for repairing ?
When they repair your mbp, they just change the display panel or change the whole part including the whole cover.

since my mbp display has the yellowing issue and they agreed to repair it and my mbp's cover has a big scratch and it's very noticeable.
I am wondering will they change the whole part or not. really want to get a new cover as well

They change the whole panel, casing and all. You might be in luck.

Glossy 15" MacBook Pro 2.4GHz week 44, Samsung screen: yellowish at the bottom but hardly noticeable and some uneven brightness in 3 different small spots.

Bought on Oct 29, received on Nov 5 2007 from China.

Apple, wake up!

Hadn't had time to deal with this but I finally had some time to stop-by yesterday at the Apple Store Soho (Manhattan).

I dealt with an employee at the Genius Bar who just kept denying anything I said using misguided arguments (one of many time-wasting exchanges with him: Him: "Look at it this way, will getting a new computer fix the problem? No!" Me, almost yelling: "What??? You don't know that and you are you asking me to put up with Apple poor sourcing and quality control when if fact you should be banging LG and Samsung on the head for this issue. I am the customer, remember?")
A supervisor was called and he created a case. He also said he is aware of this issue and that they would fix it, even if it takes several attempts.

After backing-up and formatting my drive, I will drop it off today.

Will report back as this progresses.

2.6 MBP delivered today and yup - i've got a dud

My MBP has been delivered today, first thoughts wow, second, the screen isn't that great.

I have run those tests, the LCD Test 1.1 worked OK, but when looking at the two white boxes the bottom one looks dirty also the grey one isn't that great either.

So Sad.. waited 2 weeks for this. Now do I take it to an Apple Store or Online. The apple store genius will probably deny there is an issue here or maybe log a case and send me on my way sans laptop.

Either way it looks like it will be a long wait to get a replacement. Brand new machine, i don't want it repaired I want it swapped. I know there is a problem as I had a 2.4 the other week (took it back because no one would upgrade the hdd).

Arrrggghhh! Why do Apple still ship these machines with sub-standard monitors!?

Picture 1.png

Looks like Samsung to me if they tell me the code is correct?

Can anyone tell me if it is JUST samsung or is it with LG too?

Its so sad Apple is doing nothing to fix this issue... absolutely nothing! Its very unfortunate that Apple still leaves its customers uncovered on tis matter! I cant believe that for 6 months the problem isn't dealt with. People are still buying problem MBPros. This is a problem that ruins Apples credibility, probably permanently. Its no excuse that its either Samsung of LG to blame. Next time design wont get her out of this. People just wont forget this time!

I feel u buddy,..... spent so much,... waited so long,... and to ur dismay,... it's not perfect. And that's the most important part of the laptop!

I returned mine few months ago,..... been waiting till Apple fix the screen before I plunge in.

But unfortunate to heard about the yellowish screen again,.... Most people in the forum can live with it,.... but I'm not most.

Sorry to hear about your screen.

After having a new MBP, I sold it and went back to the MB due to the screen loooking bad, I had a perfect colored screen. too

I got a MacBook Pro last week with slight yellowing in the bottom 3rd. All in all, my old MacBook Pro has a far better display than this new LCD. Brighter, crisper, smoother image. It's definitely going back.

Well I have just phoned them and they have told me they will send out another one as a priority and then collect the old faulty one later...

I did not have to argue or push my case - they said yeah ok no problem, we will sort it for you. I think they are well aware of the problem..

Just waiting now for the new one to come...

Waiting... waiting... waiting...

Can anyone confirm if this is just the Samsung Screen or is LG just as bad?

Likewise, after two attempts to land a MBP with a decent LCD I gave up on the Odyssey and got my money back.

It is appalling and unbelievable that your $1,000 Dell has has a monitor at least as good as a $2,200 MBP.

I am not getting another Apple until the company decides to respect our standards and money.

Hi there, did u get ur money back 100% or did u have to pay the restocking fee?

Got my first mac, a Macbook Pro 2.2Ghz w/matte screen. I ordered it from amazon.com during Thanksgiving weekend and got a killer deal...anway:

Week 41
Screen 9C66 (AUO)

I have the yellowing on the bottom 1/3 of the screen, most noticable with the grey test image provided. Also when running the LCD Test program, I noticed some dead pixels and a bunch of "lazy" ones . What should I do, call up amazon.com or call apple or go to a local apple store? Thanks guys.

My MBP seems to be perfect. No, i havent ran any one color backgrounds to look, but..i have looked on multiple backgrounds, and the start up screen which is white/gray depending whose looking at it. If I cant see a problem when i'm using it, whats use in trying to find one? i recieved it the wednesday before thanksgiving from apple.com.

As par the 2.6ghz chip thread, I received mine on the 24th and it had....you guessed it, a 9c68 samsung screen with a noticable yellowing bottom 3rd....apple care gave me the choice of reparing it or replacing it, and I chose to repair it, not wanting to play my chances again. *Hopefully* the people at the apple repair center have an eye for a yellowing screen.

So, and I can't beleive I'm saying this, Apple is still shipping MBP's with defective samsung screens. Jeez, are just being cheap or something???

Hey everyone,

Just to keep everyone updated on my situation: I received my replacement MBP from Apple 2 days ago, and to my dismay, it also had yellowing on the bottom. It didn't seem as bad as my first unit, but it still is noticeable. I'm probably just going to go ahead and return it and get a full refund. If i were to request for another unit, it would almost be mid december when I receive that unit, thus one month away from Macworld. My best move at this point would be to just hold out till then and hope that Apple gets their act together for the next MBP update.

I recieved a 2.6g last moday and i love the screen. After reading about this yellowing issue I decided to test the test images. Yes there is yellowing at the bottom, but it is not that noticeable doing every day things. I am still very happy with the screen and get plenty of compliments every day on how bright and colorful it is.

Yeah I hope that Apple is good enough to fix this problem in the update... unless of course they still have surplus inventory of the yellowing screens!!! Basically it comes down to "the bottom line" vs. "the right thing to do" and we all know what motivates company directors in the end :(

Dear lord, it's hard to believe this is still going on. I ordered mine on August 25th, received it mid september and then sent back 2 before I got one that was acceptable. I finally got an LG screen in the middle of October and it's acceptable although it's still slightly uneven at the bottom and there is a little bit of backlight bleed. I don't understand why apple hasn't said anything about this, and they haven't improved it (unless its less frequent???).

good luck to everyone dealing with this, I know it's hell. Just stick with it though.

15" - Still has issues - Got 17" Instead :)

Hey All.

So, I have been waiting for some time to upgrade my iBook G4 to a new MBP. Waited through the switch to intel, some speed upgrades, and ironing out of bugs. Went to the Apple store in Toronto a few days ago and picked up a new 15" 2.4 GHz MBP. I was aware of the possibility of yellowing, and was torn between a 17" and 15", but thought I would give the 15" a whirl just cause it is more portable.

Brought it home, and was very excited to get things configured. I did a boot up test at the store and checked for dead pixels before taking it out of the store. Screen looked good, no dead pixels, and color looked uniform at that point. I had decided once I got home not to do the image test for yellowing. I was just going to use my new mac and enjoy it. However, upon getting things going, and using safari, finder, etc, it was visibly noticible that the lower portion of the screen was not as bright and white as the upper portion. Just moving a finder window down lower you could see things change. Scrolling pages in Safari, and as the page scrolled up it would get brighter. It was visually distracting. Ugh.

So, I ran the image test with both images and sure enough it was quite apparent. As much as I did not want it to be so, and was even willing to not test if I did not notice anything, I couldnt deny what I saw, and I was unimpressed to say the least.

Pondered if I could live with it for a few days, but I saw no reason why I should, so I trucked it back to the Apple store in Toronto 2 days after purchase. I had copies of test images on a thumb drive, as well as hard drive so that I could demonstrate in store lighting. Got to the store, and explained my reeason for exchange. Sales person took me to tech person, and I explained issue and showed results of image test. He completely agreed, and said they would exchange. I said if I could not find a decent 15", then I would get the high res 17".

They pull another 15" out of the back and I start to check it out. They brought me a glossy instead of a matte, but I decide to keep going in case it happens to be really good. The sales girl goes to get a matte anyway, so I load up the test images and alas, this one is worse then the one I have. Back in the box it goes.

The matte 15" comes out, and we go through the whole process again (this takes a few minutes with each machine as you have to configure stuff for the first time). Anywho, this once comes up, load up the images from thumb drive, and it suffers the same fate (although a little better then the glossy). The sales girl is quite amazed.

All 3 units were week 42. One samsung, and 2 of the other brand (not LG).

At this point, I tell them that I wish to get a 17", as I need accurate display. She talks to the tech guy, and asks if I would run my test on a 17" on display before they pull one out. No problemo. We run the test on a floor model and it is perfect. White squares everywhere.

Manager is getting wind of this, as there are open MBP boxes everywhere. I dont think he was impressed. Anyway, too late, as I did what I needed by this time.

They sell an 'extreme' model of the 17" from the store. It has the High Res display, 2.6Ghz processor, and 7200rpm 200GB drive. That is what I ended up with. Did a quick pixel check at the store, it was great, and it is sitting on my desk right now. I must say, this machine is beautiful.. The display is perfect. Checking them out at the store does not give them justice. I have the brightness turned down a few notches, and it is still very bright.

Anywho, just thought I would share my experience. Thanks to this forum for providing the tools and information to ensure that I got a good product. I'm an apple fan, but I expect quality. I'm not an 'anal pixel peeper', but if it is visually distracting then that is a different matter.

I'm VERY happy with 17" High Res. If your on the fence with this you wont be dissappointed. I had to trade off some 'portablitly', but I got an awesome screen, faster processor, and faster/bigger HD. Life is good.

Cheers.

I busted the bank and owe money just to get this "extreme" 15.4 inch.

Sure wish I had the money to upgrade to the 17" - some of us aren't as lucky, I am forced the play the game :(

wow dude, not all of us have $3500 to spend, especially just to get a screen that has somewhat even color... $2000 for the 15" was enough of a stretch for me... but hey, i if you got that kind of cash... go for it.
