What does it matter to you? If I like a mac why does it bother you so much that I will buy one.

Good question.

I've never seen more individuals come out in defense of Windows before, especially on an Apple fan forum. I'm especially perplexed by anti-Apple posts from forum members who has been on MacRumors for a long time. Educated discourse is one thing, baiting and flaming people is another.

De Gustibus Non Est Disputandum

I love Macs as much as anyone but this debate misses the entire point. There's an old latin saying that applies here: De Gustibus Non Est Disputandum - There is no disputing taste. This is what the Mac vs PC argument is about - taste.

The simple reality is that for a Mac person spending money on the artistic quality and hardware/software synergy and the simplicity of the machine/OS are paramount. This for the Mac person is the essence of good computing.

For many PC people the difficulty and challenge of learning the nuances of a complex system of software and hardware and the possibilities inherent in endless variations of hardware, cases and other modifications is the essence of computing. And for the masses who don't really care about computing anymore than they care about how their phone works (but still use it), it isn't even a matter of taste but of simple utility for their particular life tasks.

So the interpretation of the ad depends on the viewer. Are they a connoisseur of computing like most of us on this thread are? And do their tastes lie on the Mac side or the PC side or are they neutral on computing in general? So in the end these price comparisons and nitpicking about specs and OS security are relatively useless. PC people use PCs precisely because it fits their taste. Mac people use Macs because they fit theirs. And some people prefer 100 year old bottles of vintage Pinot Noir and others could care less.

Sorry to say but this is what it boils down to.

The amazing thing is that these are the same who turn every mention of Apple into a flamewar, complaining about Apple fanboys (even though they outnumber them in most forums/Engadget/Gizmodo/Digg/Reddit/Slashdot)

Only among Apple fans. Try selling a year old MBP for $1500 to an average person and they'll laugh in your face. Even at $1,000 they'll laugh at you.

Ok now that comment makes no sense at all. items have a certain resale value, and since MBP's are expensive to begin with, they have a higher resale value. its just fact. so if they laugh at you then they can go buy a pc, but if you put your MBP on ebay or craigslist, you will get the proper resale value. and obviously its "only among apple fans", who the hell else would buy it? thats like saying "try selling a year old bmw for $40,000, they would laugh at you", thats fine, they can go buy a toyota, that doesnt mean the year old bmw isnt actually worth that much, it has a certain resale value.

Look, there's been so much bashing and defending on here. It's outrageous. It all boils down to taste, use and budget... why do people need computers? what will they be doing with them? there are solutions all over the place, not just at an apple retail store. like I'd still like to hope that more folks will venture in to an apple store, like the products and buy it, but thats the fanboy in me. truth is, there are solutions with other brands for everyone, but it comes down to what the computer is going to be used for. In the ad, Lauren just wanted a portable machine with a 17" screen under $1k. Accomplished. We don't know anything else about her. That's why this ad works so well, and has sparked so many pages of responses on a Mac rumors site... it's advertisement at it's finest, considering the economic climate.

Do I NEED the iMac I'm on right now? No. I need a computer. No, I want a computer. And I want a computer that does a handful of things, including email, social networking, digital media management, light website creation and movie editing. I'd imagine it's all possible on a PC. I tried it on a PC years back and didn't like the disconnect of all the features and software, so I tried a Mac. My PowerBook G4 opened a new world for me, and I've never looked back. I sure as hell hope on the PC side that it's become easier to do the things that I want my machine to do, but I like the ease of use, considering I've been on a Mac for a few years now, and the overall seamlessness from web to iMac to iPhone to my life. The Apple products that I have, in conjunction with their other offerings, like MobileMe, have created an ease of use that I appreciate. That's just me.

Congratulations

The Mac fan boys, blogs and now even the mainstream press have their sphincters so puckered over this, Microsoft has gotten more free publicity that they could ever have dreamed up.

Nice work guys.

I don't care about the MS ad at all. It's not the ad, it's those who believe this ad is great because it justifies eevrything they believe in and want us to know about it, thus:

Scenario 1:

Macs and cheap PCs are the SAME. SAME! SAME! SAME!!!! IDENTICAL!! SAAAAAMMMME!!!!!!

No, they're not.

You're just a MORON! FANBOY MORON!!! MONEY WASTING MOOOORON!!!!!

Scenario 2:

OSX and Windows are the SAME. SAME! SAME! SAME!!!! IDENTICAL!! SAAAAAMMMME!!!!!!

No, they're not.

You're just a MORON! FANBOY MORON!!! MONEY WASTING MOOOORON!!!!!

Scenario 3:

This ad is great because it will force Apple to sell Macs CHEAPER. CHEAPER! CHEAPER!!!! MUCH LESS!! CHEAAAAAPER!!!!!!

No, they won't.

You're just a MORON! FANBOY MORON!!! MONEY WASTING MOOOORON!!!!!

Well thats just not accurate at all. You cant bitch about people only attacking apple when you yourself dont look at the other side of the coin.
Theres also this scenario:

But teh mac has more featurzzz

Yes, but most people dont need all of those features and would rather have a choice in what features their computer has instead of paying for all of them

OSX!!!!

That doesnt even make sense.

APPLE IS TEH BEST

I hate you

FANBOYYYYYYYY

I can see this maybe pushing Apple to do something about price, but I don't like the ads. "Not cool enough", but I've been using Apple since Apple ][. It kinda sucks being one of the old crew in the new age of Apple, but at the same time, the new people get us more software.

is anyone that stupid to realize macs can be pcs to. hello paralles and bootcamp : )

I hope "lauren" has fun replacing that computer in a year and has to spend another few hundred dollars on a computer that again wont last a year.

Very clever on Microsofts part. I saw it in a post earlier here though, of course a Hyundai can say it has everything a BMW has, for alot less, but we all know thats not true. Same thing here, they can say processors and all that stuff is the same, but it simply isnt. I'm not fanboy of either side btw. I own a pc and a mac, and clearly the mac has far outlasted my pc. While there are viruses and other problems on my pc (mind you I have alot invested in protection) my mac is just as fast and virus-free as it was the day I got it.

The chrome on those HP's looks utterly ridiculous too.

I respectfully disagree. What could Apple do about pricing? Product is selling, Apple is profitable. Not sure what the issue is. Point is the customer (lauren) wanted something from a company that doesn't offer it, i.e. a sub-1000 17 inch. I don't see what company would adjust their business plan off of customers way off left field, who are shopping solely based off of price and nothing more.

superior?

tell me 1 mac that can outperform my $1700 inferior Gaming PC

Well, mine is pushing 6 years old, but it outperforms your assembly of stuff because its suited to my needs.

The reason is right here:

dual 74GB WD Raptors in Raid 0
1x 500GB Seagate

Goodness! You have less than 1TB of total storage, and without any data redundancy? I have over 4TB now...roughly 6x-7x more than you.

So how do we determine who 'won' and who 'lost'?

i have over 20 games installed...

YMMV. I enjoy reality instead: I have roughly 25,000 of my original copyrighted images, stored redundantly, although the total would be 10-15K higher if I had all of my current film scanned too.

Thus, for my needs, data storage trumps game playing.

And gosh golly gee, we find that we're all different, so we naturally have different definitions of what is "Better", according to our needs.

I doubt it seriously. Steve Jobs has repeatedly said that Apple does not cater to everyone, meaning the low end crowd. The commercial is frankly stupid. Microsoft does not even sell computers. The message basically breaks down to "Hey, you can use Windows because we put it on cheap machines."

The computer on that commercial runs Vista, has a slow AMD mobile processor, DDR2 RAM, only 1440x900 on a 17" screen that many say is as bad a monitor as there is, 5 yr old networking with 802.11G and 100Mb ethernet, and a crappy that battery that claims 2.5 hours but has been reported to get only a bit more than half of that. Oh and it comes bloated with al kinds of crap software.

Now if these machines are what people want and can afford, then great. But MS fans needn't belittle Apple users (as the ad does) as being stupid people who simply pay more for a label in the name of "cool." The combination of ease-of-use, powerful and intuitive operating system, and beauty and lifespan of design makes Apple products worth the price period.

There is absolutely no comparison and Microsoft again shows that they can't compare apples to apples (sorry for any pun), but must resort to misleading advertising. MS will go downhill as long as Ballmer runs the show.

Any comments or justifications by Mac owners have only been in response. This is a Mac forum, populated by people who buy and use Macs. The other side of the coin you want me to look at are the originating pro-WindowsPCs postings. Why is anyone even bothering espousing the joy and wonderment of cheap WindowsPCs here?

As I said, I don't care about the ad itself. Go buy and use a cheap Windows PC for all I care. Heck, build your own PC, good for you! I really don't care. Seriously don't care that you do buy and use a WindowsPC, or why you do. Go post about how brilliant they are on a WindowsPC forum. Just stop trying to convince Mac users on a Mac forum who enjoy using their Macs to do the same as you and that we're stupid if we don't. You're not winning any converts. If you can't or refuse to understand why Mac owners pay more to buy and use and enjoy Macs, then you're never going to convince them not to. It's called basic market research before you even begin your sales pitch.

Justify your use of Windows and PCs to each other, not to Mac users on a Mac forum.

I hear ya. But in a discussion about pricing, raw performance will have to come first because it's the most important factor in dictating the price. You can buy hard drives in droves at low cost, but if you want those extra .2 GHz or that faster RAM, that's when the price curve goes vertical. The only other thing that can make that curve go through the roof that fast is the ultraportable form factor (MBA, Adamo, some Vaio models, etc).
