Oh yeah....$699 for a Windows based laptop.

What the Ad does not address is the "real cost" to it takes to get it running out of the box.

First, you have to remove all that damn :eek:bloatware:eek: they placed on it. If you don't do it yourself --- pay to have it removed: $80

Next, gotta protect ol' Besty  from all that malware and viruses that either came with the Windows OS junk offers, or ready to attack you when you visit those porn-sites;). Buy and install virus protection: $79

"Hey, how come I don't have a camera/webcam on my machine like the Mac?" Hmmm, need camera: $80 (for a decent one.)

"Where is the OS like the Mac? Oh great, it has Vissssta!!!!" >>>2 weeks later "Boy, this really sucks. How can I downgrade to XP?" Buy an XP license: $90 on eBay

Now I'm really ready to say I got a PC Laptop for under $1000! Let's recap:

$699 - for that great sponsored Bloatware Laptop
$80 - Removal of adware and offers.
$79 - for por-, er, virus protection
$80 - external webcam
$90 - to downgrade to XP

$1028 Total :eek::eek::eek::eek:

Well... at least you have a 17in screen...

So many people here are simply dismissing Windows and claiming that their Mac solved all of their problems.

Windows has improved massively since about 2007, which just happens to be the time which many of the users here have as their join or "switch" date. If you try a Windows machine now you'll note that it is extremely difficult to get a virus. It is extremely difficult to make a program crash and it is virtually impossible to ever see the "BSOD" which you all think is so funny.

I wish I could say the same about the Macs I have owned. Despite costing me way more than any PC ever did, I've seen the "You need to restart your computer" kernel panic nonsense way more than I ever saw BSOD. I see the spinning beach ball more often than I got the "This program has caused a problem and must be closed" XP error message back in the early days. And damn, don't even try to visit a website that has Flash on it because your machine will hang, and hang, and hang.

I cannot wait for Windows 7 to come out because then this argument will die off for good. Microsoft will have a solid OS which even at this early pre-release stage is getting glowing reviews.
XP is where it changed for me. It was great not having an application blue screen the system for once.

I just had Finder hard lock on my MacBook. I was unable to relaunch it when I tried to transfer a folder off of a USB flash drive. I had to hard restart my system after about 13 good days of uptime. Finder and browser plug-ins have been the biggest issues here but I don't go around complaining about it nor that my fans spin up and my laptop is hot.

No, we DON'T. You are the ones disturbing us in our own dedicated rumor sites...I've never participated in a Windows site, and don't plan to do so anytime soon.

Or perhaps you may have to admit once and for all: you come HERE because you DO WANT a Mac.

I HAVE A MACBOOK! I'm not a Windows fan boy. I just wonder how you can claim that you have never participated in a Windows site, and at the same time say something and stupid as "No Mac users go bother the Windows' site."

According to your own post you would not even know.

Wait...what did you just say...? "WILL HAVE A SOLID OS" with windows 7? I thought you were making a point on how they ALREADY have a solid os? :D

Ah, but don't worry...according to Sophos, now we Mac users have a REAL threat in our hands...a Trojan! Roughly 10 years and 60 million Mac users later, that's what we get in terms of online threats...

As for Windows, see here:

you get what you pay for - both hardware and operating system...

and many right now cannot afford quality computers and so any good "deal" will appeal to the masses.

apple has taken cheap shots at MS for years since reliability of windows is overall quite poor and yet windows can only come back with price as their selling point - "Buy Windows because we're cheap!" as this new ad campaign recommends.

and remember that thanks to MS, the computer repair industry thrives...

and yes, i use both macs and pcs daily - but my household is all mac...

I LOOOVE my iPhone, but Apple is SOOOO overpriced! For the amount you pay for their laptop, you can get the same one, spec-wise for $500 cheaper!

Most computers on campuses are Dell's. There are some Apple's though.

hmmm, facts to back that up?

Oh wait, its a complete fabrication.....nvm.

You cant read their financial reports? 26million ipods and iphones sold vs 2 million macs per quarter, not counting the surely large amount of itunes sales. Clearly most of their profit is from macs. I didnt think you cared about facts anyways.

Of course I do: I am a Mac user. Mac users don't waste their time bothering users of inferior products in their own discussions. Unless you consider The Register a Windows site, of course...

Running windows Vista here on a $450 Toshiba. I've got Turionx2 processors, and 2GB of RAM.

Blue Screen? Never.
Application crashes: I've had quite a few, but it doesn't bother me because its the app devs fault. I DO get very annoyed however, when parts of the OS itself constantly crash. As many here are aware, I had a tally of how often explorer crashed for the first two months I owned it. It averaged out to around 10 or so crashes per day which required a reboot if I wanted sound to work properly after. This (the computer) has slowed down considerably since ive gotten it, but hey, im down to only 3 or so crashes a day.

I shouldnt be annoyed by my OS. Windows is frankly a pain for me to use now knowing that as soon as I have the money (i'm saving) I can get back to using OSX which I love (I had gotten to use leopard on my aunts G4 powerbook for a full 2 weeks and have been DYING to get it back).

Sorry man, that is comical.

I went the route of buying PCs over Macs years ago and wasted alot more money and time on cheap unreliable PCs that could never do what I wanted them to.

I'm guessing you haven't tried a new Mac with iLife 09. GarageBand is Apple's latest revenue stream and includes a store where you can choose to buy extras. Sounds like sponsored bloatware to me.

Remove things yourself if you're not happy with them. Leaving them there isn't going to cause any problems.

It's not 2004, people don't need virus protection on Windows any more.

External webcam for $80? Where do you shop? Oh right, the APPLE STORE. I get it. That is if she even needs one. I've never used my iSight and I don't think I ever will. Partly because none of my friends have Macs and thus cannot communicate with me on iChat using video.

Downgrade to XP if you want, but if you leave Vista on it (this is 2009, we're on SP2 now) you'll be just fine. It might take you a little while to get used to where some things moved to, but it should be a better experience overall.

LOL at anybody who thinks Mac users do not ever try to stir things up with the Microsoft fan boys.

Fanboyism works in all directions.

Absolutely. Being a Linux fan as well as a OS X fan that's definitely the case.

You said music industry, I mistook that for the actual music production industry not just the player industry.

My apologies, but that really wasnt a clear point you were making.

Haha, basically the only thing that commercial tells you is that, instead of going crazy looking for a PC and playing the give a little take a little game, just go get a Mac for a couple more bucks. With a Mac you have it all, including the great looks. ;)

Not to me, go and look at the definition at overpriced.

You're the 2nd person to suggest this. Just for kicks, I did just that. Here's what I got: "charge too high a price for". I think so. Obviously this is all based on a matter of opinion though, so it's irrelevant.

I've read so many people bragging how Macs have superior hardware... no, they don't. It's the same crap, in a prettier package.

Ugh, too many fan boys here. Most of the people I know that own a PC have never had to take it for service. Even the ones with eMachine's are happy. If a $300 computer fits their needs, why bother them over it?

Except the 17 inch screen which she wanted.

I liked it how with vista they disable the task manager with the alt-ctrl-del and instead bring up another screen from where you can choose task manager. Seeing as one most of the time has to use the task manager to end processes that are not responding, they should have put it right on the start icon..:D

Hahaha, Macs are better.

You get what you pay for, that's my motto. I'm sure she'll be happy when her computer crashes and ends up spending more money to get a new one. Pc's are a piece of junk.:D
