Does it really matter what OS you use? I like windows as much as macosx. I boot both OS'es daily for different purposes. Windows for development, macosx for leisure and entertainment. I really don't know what the fuzz is all about. Thanks to these innovative companies, we have all this beautiful technology in our hands and these companies also benefit from each others innovation.

So many people here are simply dismissing Windows and claiming that their Mac solved all of their problems.

Windows has improved massively since about 2007, which just happens to be the time which many of the users here have as their join or "switch" date. If you try a Windows machine now you'll note that it is extremely difficult to get a virus. It is extremely difficult to make a program crash and it is virtually impossible to ever see the "BSOD" which you all think is so funny.

I literally LOL'd at this, because I had two machines BSOD just yesterday, one a Vista, one XP. One a Thinkpad, the other an HP. And you're just as misguided as the Apple fanboys in here if you think it's "extremely difficult to get a virus". Dude, I clean them on a weekly basis. Either you're wrong, or the people at my company are a bunch of virus-catching prodigies.

I'm guessing you haven't tried a new Mac with iLife 09. GarageBand is Apple's latest revenue stream and includes a store where you can choose to buy extras. Sounds like sponsored bloatware to me.

I use it all the time, it's actually quite a nice app, albeit a bit stripped down compared to Logic, but then again it was a part of a $80 bundle.

It's not 2004, people don't need virus protection on Windows any more.

That's absolutely dangerous advice.

External webcam for $80? Where do you shop? Oh right, the APPLE STORE. I get it. That is if she even needs one. I've never used my iSight and I don't think I ever will. Partly because none of my friends have Macs and thus cannot communicate with me on iChat using video.

I paid $80 for a Logitech cam with the same res as the built-in iSight. I got it at Best Buy.

Downgrade to XP if you want, but if you leave Vista on it (this is 2009, we're on SP2 now) you'll be just fine. It might take you a little while to get used to where some things moved to, but it should be a better experience overall.

While it is more secure and just as stable, Vista is horrendously slow compared to OS X, Windows XP, Ubuntu Linux, and Windows 7 Beta. Thank God they're dumping it soon.

long time lurker, and mac user, and created an account to respond.

I dunno. Maybe I'm missing the point to act rabid towards microsoft, but I'm happy they are doing this.

It's great for competitors to jab at weak points of other competitors because they'll (hopefully) fix those flaws. And all of us can say, "I wish I would have paid less." I have two mac pro's, and although they can do things a PC will never even come close to doing, I wish I would have paid less for them.

Microsoft came out with a horrible operating system, it was pointed out by competitors (and everyone else) and they quickly worked on revising it.

Maybe and thats a very loose "maybe" Apple would counteract this by lowering the prices a bit? Wishful thinking.

70% of the world's computer using population can't be wrong.

Macs are glorified Fisher-Price activity centres for adults; computers for scaredy cats too nervous to learn how proper computers work; computers for people who earnestly believe in feng shui.

Like, NASA, DOD, Pixar....

Who the hell cares!? Its a computer! How can you even be bothered to be so loyal to one camp or another!? Only good things can come out of this campaign which is apple reduce their prices. Who the hell can complain about that!?

Even Vista isn't that bad anymore. Although i did get a pop up asking if i wanted to disable aero on my workstation because my computer couldn't handle it (it's an 8x2.5ghz xeon dell precision workstation...)

yeah sure, good point, it's been mentioned that they put out an ad for hardware they don't even make....hahah...

that's what happens when you can't come out and say as they would have wanted "we have a better os" cause you are going to be a laughing stock.

As has been pointed out several times in this thread, Microsoft makes money when they HP sells a machine with Windows on it.

Geez, guys...

this is a good ad, and to the people who state PC ownsership is SOOOO high.

I purchased as my main computer a HP PIII 1.0ghz in 2003 (i believe) for 1k, with a BB warranty plan for another $200=$1200.. within the warranty i once got my HDD replaced, and out of the warrenty i replaced the fan on my own.

I am still using this computer to date as my main desktop @ home.

I'd say 6 years is well over these expected 2 yr ranges...

Thanks!

Same for me here. I am much more efficient working on a quiet computer. =)

Exactly.

Actually, the full MSRP of MS Vista Premium is $400.
While refurb Mac Mini with OSX and 1 year of warranty has MSRP of $420.

Which is the better deal?
(No, OEM windows doesn't count, as you don't have support.)

In all these cases, they are not even comparing the product with their full Vista Premium installed.

Those PCs all have the mid range crippled vista, usually home edition,
not the full uncrippled (but still poorly made) Vista Premium
(which most businesses and users avoid or pay to "upgrade" to xp).

Please tell me you are joking with this line!!!

"Same for me here. I am much more efficient working on a quiet computer. =)"

I love this site but it might be time to give up on it. This is absolutely crazy talk.

Yeah so what? Why don't just come out and say, hey we got a great OS, we got the better OS?

I say they don't do this cause they are going to be the laughing stock of the compute world.

Do you have an alternative explanation.

Why oh why is ms so timid in saying we got a good product but insist on we got a cheap product instead?

They are digging their hole deeper...bring back jerry seinfield and bill gate in the shoe store...good god that was atrocious...:D:D:apple::apple:

Take Apple and MS out of the equation

Take the players out of the equation and look at it from a market share perspective...

A company with almost 90% market share is spending millions to go after a company with less than 10% market share. That seems dumb to me.

Reminds me of the Apple add where PC is splitting the money. "Advertising, advertising, advertising...fix Vista."

I've been developing web apps for the better part of the past ten years, moved to a Mac three years ago, and can say, unequivocally, that it is a superior test and development platform.

I do run Windows XP, Windows Vista, and Linux, each with variations on IE and/or Firefox, so that I can test across all platforms. And yeah, I do all that on a Mac.

My experience is that if you put a Windows server admin on a Mac or Linux server, and they're screwed. Put a Mac or Linux server admin on a Windows server, and they're unhappy but generally competent. This is due to the close proximity to the OS underpinnings that Linux and Mac OS provide.

So, in a nutshell, I think you're wrong, both generally and specifically.

This site has become laughable with the amount of insanely rude people here, the complete lack of moderation, and the incredible amount of bias on both sides of the OS fence.

Thankfully much of it is contained within the News Discussion area, so perhaps I'll stick to the other parts of the forum.

I Because at heart its still windows and has all the quirks, bad UI/UX design and horrible "feel" of windows. None of my family or friends will go back either, because they like OS X so much.

Well, lets see how Windows 7 is before we give up on it. Some people have tried it and liked it. Leo Laporte has used it and thinks it is the first Windows a Mac user might like. However, he points out this is a beta version which may end up being quite unlike the final version. Right now it may not have all the "security" features that slow Vista down (apparently.)

from my personal experience a PC notebook is only slightly cheaper if you get ALL feature of a mac. Especially size and weight add to the price of a PC. Screen and sound quality in MBP's is also quite good and that adds to the prize if you want a PC with the same specs.

However if you don't want all features you can have a PC much cheaper. On top of that if you want a feature that is not available or a strong point of macs (like blue ray, card reader, fingerprint reader, second HD, USB and firewire ports, VGA ports, DVI ports) then PC notebooks deliver much better price/hardware value.

E.g. you want a 17" screen but you don't care about weight or a 2.66+ GHz CPU then there is nothing on a mac below 2500 bucks. But you get those features that are important to you for 1500 bucks easily.

So in that sense the ad is perfectly reasonable and correct.

You meant to say 300 more? Right? Cause the whitebook is that cheap and it is better specked, it just has a smaller screen, which is a dumb choice to base a laptop on since if you are on the go you can't really do demanding work on any screen and wherever you are stationary you just $150 and you get a great big fo screen, which you are going to get anyway as most users have one to stick their lappies on at home.

No - I mean a 17". Does the WhiteBook have a 250GB STOCK HD and 4GB STOCK RAM and a 17" display? Apples to Oranges I say.

D

It sure does, which is why so many people love macs. I for one cannot wait to ditch the windows world for my personal computing for good.

How many millions more people are there out there who love Windows silently though?

Does that 17" monster have discrete graphics which is the sole most important thing she will need if she is into graphic design and hence bought that screen size? She can get any hd as soon as she wants to or can afford too, same for ram. Can she get discrete graphics? No. :apple:
