In my opinion its an absolutely fair criticism - the price of Macs does put me off.

lol...its funny reading this thread and all the hardcore mac users scared to death - omg the laptop she bought is horrible; it doesn't have rounded edges or "cool" blue lights that come on randomly

Seriously - efficiency, compatibility and ease of use over looks anyday.

Its amazing that they're calling us "retards" when they're the ones absolutely obsessed with completely meaningless superficial characteristics over actual substance.

Screen size doesn't make a computer better....

It's quality, one word Microsoft doesn't understand. That's why we have windows. Everything must be balanced. Good and bad. Guess what Microsoft is?

I agree somewhat but if the screen size is to small it doesn't help either. The macbook is a solid computer for being on the go. But 13 inches is to small for your only screen. She needed one computer to fit all of her needs. Apple does not offer a computer to service this request. Thats the entire commercial. And it is true! I have five computers at home or at work. My apple laptop fits my needs of a small, slower portable laptop. I carry it with me on trips and when I need to give talks thats it. At home I run my PC desktop for everything that requires true power requirements and a 30" screen.

Back to Dell.com, a quick glance at their laptops gets me this for $2,100 (just $100 more than Apple's entry level MacBook Pro):

15.4 High Res Screen
Intel C2D 2.5GHz
8GB RAM
500GB HD
Blu-Ray Drive
256MB NVIDIA GeForce
Wireless-N
Bluetooth
Built-in Web Cam
Software Bundle

Apple gets me:

15.4 High Res Screen
Intel C2D 2.4GHz
2GB RAM
250GB HD
DVD Drive
256MB NVIDIA GeForce
Wireless-N
Bluetooth
Built-in Web Cam
Software Bundle

Close, but slightly more on the Dell.

You should always look for deals on Mac's too. For instance Amazon.com is selling the entry model 15" MBP for $130 off retail. At the least it would give you some cash to offset the HD/Ram difference.

MacMall also has the 15" MBP for under $1800 but its a mail in rebate instead of instant like Amazon.

Nice of you to ignore the thread and just make things up.....

To all the vista/pc people here, I got this to say: You won't find us in vista forums attacking ms, cause some of us never used their crap, others got tired of it and switched, in any way we are not in the ms forums giving them a hard time cause we really couldn't care less and we are happy with our purchases from apple. Why is it that some of you make it a point to come here and complain about the apple kool aid? Do I detect a bit of envy?

Wow, that "real person" actress bought a 17" low resolution laptop with the latest cheap low-quality components on the market and which runs the latest and most horrible version of the world's worst OS for just 700$! That really fully convinces me, I'll buy a PC right away!

Retards.
Once upon a time the 17" Mac laptops topped out at 1440 x 900 as well. Lest we forget you can get 1920 x 1200 on a 15.4" screen as well.

Not that I recommend it.

Let's see... I want a cute girl, must be wearing a green scarf. Oh, and she must be a cheap date too. I know those are rather arbitrary specs, but I'm following Daddy Bill's direction here.

Let's see, first I went to the Apple store and hung around. Saw a couple cute girls there with green scarves. Both shot me down, cold. I guess I'm not cool enough to date a Mac girl.

So I drug my sorry butt to Best Buy. The place was totally cash! First girl I went up to was hovering over a lame HP PC. She was all agog over the thing. Seems she found that she can work on her zits in the reflection of the shiny screen. The resolution was terrible, the battery life sucked, but what the heck she could work on her complexion while watching a vampire chick flick. (Try doing that on a much cheaper TV).

"Of course" she'd go out with me, she said. "I have no minimum standards."

Then she was all over me when I told her I had a Mac.

"Get a room," someone said.

God you're an arrogant tool.

here are my thoughts after watching that -

- it seems short sighted to buy based on just price & specs (which is the criteria that the commercial suggests you do) - that's like saying that I want to find a car that's a certain size and with a certain horsepower without researching the reliability or construction of the vehicle
- someone should interview "Lauren" after a few weeks (or a month) of using her prized 17" laptop - see how happy she is then
- but you have to run windows (enough said)

I think the add was trying to say something along these lines: "Macs are for people who want a computer, PCs are for people who need a computer."

It's not a bad advertisement, but it's hitting on the economic nerve. You need a computer that does X, and you only have Y cash. Technical details not withstanding, obviously. I mean, seriously. She looked at an HP.

I rather have the MacBook with the packed peanuts and the balloon than that piece of crap PC (diapers included!);)

If she needed a computer to fill all her needs that 17" monster she got doesn't feel the need for portability clearly. That invalidates what you are arguing here. She'd be far better of with a great 22" screen for about $150 and a whitebook.

Yep, she got exactly what she wanted, so there's nothing more to it, really. In terms of actual hardware tech specs, she got a computer that's somewhat comparable to the 17" MBP. It's just the battery life, weight, size, LCD panel quality, and a bit of speed that she's missing. ;)

However, the situation used in the ad is fairly realistic. The 17" MBP is definitely a better laptop, but the slight benefits the 17" MBP will make to most consumers is not enough to warranty paying 4 times the price, especially if they're not all that into computers to begin with. Ask my girlfriend if she's happy with her computer, and she'll ask you what there is to be happy about.

Another example: I'm sure my $150 earphones aren't as good as a pair of $1000 Sennheisers or UEs, but I'm no less happy with them because there comes a point where it's not worth spending more to get back what I perceive to be little benefit in return. However, if you ask an audiophile, and they'll tell you that the benefits of the $500 to $1000 earphones are obvious, and worth the extra money. Well that's only true to an audiophile, just like the differences between computers only has value to those who care about such things. ;) To me, I get what I need from both my $100+ in-ears.

And she said she'd need to double her ($1000) budget to buy a 17" MBP. Where did she find such an awesome discount? :D :p The ad should have said "triple her budget".

Wow, that's exactly what I was thinking. You know in the end, I just sold my audiophile grade phones, and purchased some Bose OE because they did me well enough ... deciding that I was no audiophile. I just wanted good pleasurable sound quality.

I bought a mac notebook after that and I never felt like I spent too much on it. I did feel like I spent too much for my Compaq desktop years ago (it was $800).

Oh and I agree with the guy above. Buy a 13" laptop, then good 22" lcd. That is the best setup for a college student.

Of course. This is called inferiority complex. They come here because there are no PC Rumors sites anywhere; apart from Mr. Enderle's partners, of course...

AGAIN: Did you notice the fugliness and bulkiness of the PC she chose? If you don't have a Mac, it's because you don't deserve it.

The difference is rather obvious; but only those that take the time to get over stupid spec-bragging competitions perceive it. We couldn't care less about how many HP934343 models exist out there, or how many iterations of the train wreck called Vista are available. For me there is only one version: it's called Leopard and it's flawless.

Oops...

MAN, that is some bad editing. Someone already pointed out that Lauren did not enter the Apple store. Cue up the cut where she "comes out of the apple store." You can tell that she has just walked up to the door, done an about face (which is edited out and the view changes to a different camera) and then walks away with a silly grin on her face, as in "this is embarrassing..."

Another clue: the incredible repeating man's face is blurred out artificially, so therefore we know that he was not an actor, therefore we know that the scene was not staged.) He was just a guy ambling along when they were filming this commercial. As someone who has been involved in the production of commercials, I am amazed that more care was not taken by the film crew to properly stage the event...

Note well from the Best Buy Link:

What's Included
* Software: Microsoft Works, Muvee Reveal and more

That's it.

Microsoft Vista Home 64 bit OS.

Compare a Powerbook from Apple:

Software

* Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard (includes iTunes, Time Machine, Quick Look, Spaces, Spotlight, Dashboard, Mail, iChat, Safari, Address Book, QuickTime, iCal, DVD Player, Photo Booth, Front Row, Xcode Developer Tools)
* iLife ’09 (includes iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb, GarageBand)

There may be some differential value for the price, HP Laptop vs the Apple Laptop.

The only question is if the differential in software and "platform benefits" is up to the about 100%+ price differential.

If only people were making informed decisions, quite a few more would go the way of Apple.

Oh, wait, that IS what is happening, thus triggering the NEED for this commercial!

:D

Rocketman

Taking bets on when Apple market capitalization exceeds that of Microsoft. I say 2.5 years.

LOL at anybody who thinks Mac users do not ever try to stir things up with the Microsoft fan boys.

Fanboyism works in all directions.

it's Apple, Sony, Alienware, whatever, a pro 17" laptop is probably going to run you over $1000 — though still well under Apple's cost, so why they focused on a sub-$1000 17" laptop is sort of beyond me.

Probably because Apple's 17" is its most expensive base-price laptop.

So many people here are simply dismissing Windows and claiming that their Mac solved all of their problems.

Windows has improved massively since about 2007, which just happens to be the time which many of the users here have as their join or "switch" date. If you try a Windows machine now you'll note that it is extremely difficult to get a virus. It is extremely difficult to make a program crash and it is virtually impossible to ever see the "BSOD" which you all think is so funny.

I wish I could say the same about the Macs I have owned. Despite costing me way more than any PC ever did, I've seen the "You need to restart your computer" kernel panic nonsense way more than I ever saw BSOD. I see the spinning beach ball more often than I got the "This program has caused a problem and must be closed" XP error message back in the early days. And damn, don't even try to visit a website that has Flash on it because your machine will hang, and hang, and hang.

I cannot wait for Windows 7 to come out because then this argument will die off for good. Microsoft will have a solid OS which even at this early pre-release stage is getting glowing reviews.

And you seem to think it's everyone out there that's concerned about getting the cheapest crap out there.

I think you just put words in my mouth. Go back and re-read what I wrote. Then come back here and apologize. :)

No, we DON'T. You are the ones disturbing us in our own dedicated rumor sites...I've never participated in a Windows site, and don't plan to do so anytime soon.

Or perhaps you may have to admit once and for all: you come HERE because you DO WANT a Mac.
