New Microsoft Ad Campaign Targets Mac Prices

Nice story. So, how much work did you lose because Finder crashed and respawned?
None. This was a Mini G4 with 512 MB RAM, ever tried "working" on one of those? It was a glorified iPod charger. A maxed out 2009 Mac Mini would probably be alright though. Not exactly a workstation, but no worse than a laptop (which it pretty much is, internally).

We were talking OS stability, I'm assuming Finder is considered part of the OS. And what sort of foul machine have you used that made you "lose work" through an OS crash? An application might crash but where does the OS come in?

And what does Safari have to do with OS stability?
Well, naturally the basic-out-of-the-box apps aren't strictly a part of the OS but it's sort of difficult to evaluate the overall OS X experience and omit the browser.

I can't talk about Vista, but XP is most certainly not stable enough. Hardly a day goes by without my being forced to restart the system. And yes, a crash is unacceptable as it kills my workflow.
I can't help but wonder what people are doing with their machines. I only restart PCs (or Macs for that matter) when Windows Update (or Apple Software Update) require it, otherwise I just put them on standby or hibernation. Older systems like Win98, Win2K, or early XP before the various service packs would get congested if you hammered them for a few hours, but that was then...

please explain to me how they are better made,

#1 apple does not make a single peice of HW
#2 your ram is made by crucial, the EXACT same modules are used in Compaq and HP Laptops (sometimes even made in the same week) the cas timings and latency are the same
#3 your apple laptop most likely has a cheap seagate drive inside (not 7200RPM, not 16MB cache, not a hybrid drive) guess what, in the latest comparison tests seagate drives fall a little short in speed and performance to WD scorpio drives
#4 the LCD panel on your mac is most likely an LG panel, dell uses the same ODM for their LCDs too
#5 the assembly of the macbooks are all made by Hon Hai in Shenzen china (chinese made, but everyone knows the highest quality laptops come from taiwan, MBP's used to come from taiwan but now are made in china becuase its cheaper)
#6 most of apples motherboards are made by Asus, why would asus make a higher quality motherboard for SOMEONE ELSE than themselves (asus manufactures like 10 diffrent laptop lines, most of them being higher quality than apple)

You have to admit that Mac's do perform way better.

LOL.

Bro, Mac motherboards are made by Intel + Apple, not ASUS. The exact specifications of the motherboards are custom-made, and are considered a trade secret by Apple Inc.

What? If anything, PC hardware is limited seeing as it can't run OS X.
what do you mean by pc hardware? do you know that components inside a Dell are exactly the same a macbook?

so clearly it couldn't be the hardware that's incapable running os x. so what's left?

why don't you just say the truth!

that, OSX is crippled so that it only runs on apple computers!

what a way to spin the truth. disgusting.

LOL.

And here we have the most important point of all.

No fanboy crap. That's seriously the way it is. Everything on a PC - no matter what it is - is still filtered and bottlenecked by running Windows.

If you want to buy a PC, go buy one. I'll stick with what works better.

intel doesnt even make their own Mobos even tho they are branded "Intel"

PC Hardware is limited........? OSX doesnt support anything other than what apple tells you, OSX has limited drivers and only runs on a very small amount of HW (basically what you find at the apple store)

with PC's Windows and linux, you have millions of combinations of HW. thats not very limited to me.

Absolutely it only runs on Apple computers. They invented it. Hence they have the right to say EXACTLY what it runs on. It's elite, and I love it. ;)

nobody says you have to run windows, ubuntu has EVERYTHING out of the box, even more so than OSX (full office suite) and if you dont have an app that you need, just get it from the repository.

There are also "fanboy's" on both sides, I have seen this term used very liberally and it seems to be more a personal attack than fact.

One fact I haven't seen addressed is Apple's increasing market share over the past few years. Apple has steadily increased it's growth in the personal computing business. I believe most people will agree that Apple OS manufactured systems are (generally) more expensive than Windows based counterparts. It is very interesting to note that people are increasingly willing to pay more money for a personal computer manufactured by Apple than for another Windows OS based personal computer. The question is, why?

I said this back on page 83 or so but don't waste your time trying to get the fans boys to admit they are paying the Apple tax just to run OS X on the same hardware. Apple consumers are brain washed into thinking that since they paid more it must be better, why do think there are over 100 pages in this thread most of which are Apple fan boys trying to justify their purchases and why they paid the Apple tax.

Wow, talk about a bad commercial. How are you expecting to win over customers when you make them feel like total losers for buying your products?

So basically, if you want a top of the line computer, go to the Apple store. If you want plastic junk for bargain basement prices then buy a PC at your local Best Buy.

Maybe their new slogan should be, "Buy a PC. They're good enough, for the most part. I mean, at least they're cheap, right?"

PC's can't run osx =/= Apple computers run osx.

basic english. the above two senteces have two very different meaning.

Completely unnecessary. Let's keep this discussion respectful please.

ill keep the bashing to a minimum sorry.

anyways, why do they pay more?
- they are UNINFORMED
- they have little knowlege of computers or components and specifications.
- they buy products based on looks and or color.
- they either dont have the time to learn something new or they dont want to learn something new
- they are easily manipulated by media and advertisements

Look. Wouldn't it be logical to take a REAL person, randomly, and offer him/her money? Why did they need to use an actress?

The Apple commercial featured real celebrities, not actors pretending to be celebrities.

Perhaps MS felt they went overboard blowing $10 million on Jerry Seinfeld for their past $300 million endeavor.

When I use Windows, I feel like I've been completely ripped off. Every single cent I spent for that PC, completely wasted.

When I use OS X, I feel that my computer is completely worth every single cent I paid for it.

And quite a lot of people feel the same.

Each and every client who has switched during the past six years tells me virtually the same thing. The redemption comes in the form of making back all of the funds wasted within one year of consistent productivity, sans the aggravation and nonsense.

All I have to say...

is... my last Mac laptop that I bought in 1999, lasted for 6 years without a blip, hick-up or issue. I used it everyday for those 6 years and it worked flawless. I don't know of a single non-apple laptop that would have lasted and been useful for that long.

All the Mac's we have in-house are 2 to 4 years old (two MacBooks, one MacBook Pro, and one iMac). None have issues. We've never had viruses. We've never had to "reinstall" or do anything to our Macs.

Yes... you pay a premium for Macs, but in my opinion, as well as many others, (remember, Apple makes several computers that are in the top 10 selling desktop and laptops out there), it's worth every penny to not have to be a slave to my computer... instead.... it's a slave to me! :D

No antivirus software needed
No antispyware/adware software needed
No maintenance/maintenance software needed
No maintenance of any other kind needed
No slowdowns over time
Greater stability
Best in-class software (especially out of the box)
Best-in-Class design (of the hardware and the OS UI)
Better resale value
Hardware/software integration that can't be beat
Seamless integration between OS X and other Apple devices, all with equally beautiful and usable UIs.

Your damned right I'd pay more for this. In fact, if I had to, I'd lay down an extra $500 to $1000 more for this. I've been a user of Intel-based Macs since April 2006. I'd be stupid to turn my back on such a good thing. The difference in the user experience is like night and day.

The machine you work on day-in-day out, is not something you should be cheaping out on.

The cost of entry is higher, but once you've got one you just use it and let the rest take care of itself. Couldn't be more simple.
