yes pretty much everyone expects when he puts out updates to work on every iPhone in the world not just his.
If he's the one putting stuff out on cydia it's his responsibility to make sure it don't screw up peoples iPhones.

Then you should not install Mobile Substrate or any extension that uses it. It's that simple. Using it carries risks you aren't willing to accept.

Do you really think everyone out there knows what mobile substrate is, does or what extensions it uses or what .dylib plugins are or do?
NO.
Your logic doesnt make sense, not everyone who jailbreaks is a programmer.
People install stuff on the JB iphones and when theres a cydia update they just hit install cause they dont suspect that its going to lock up their phones.
The person who puts up the updates has no responsibility but the unsuspected user that got his iphone bricked does right?
Im done arguing with you

Still... Nobody has learned what Bricked means. :)

People don't suspect these updates will mess up their installs and they shouldn't necessarily expect that.

In the nature of software development there is only so much testing you can do. I appreciate you respecting the dev enough to say it's not his responsibility and I can understand how frustrating it must be to have your phone that was working fine get screwed up from an update.

Hopefully Saurik gets the kinks sorted out, but one can only expect so much from software that was never inteneded to be on the iPhone in the first place. What he's done is nothing short of amazing.

I hope people aren't too scared off now to update their phones in the future. This is a small incident in the grand scheme of the updates that pour out of Cydia, if it messes up your phone then it will be unfortunate and may cost you a couple of hours to get it back up and running and it sucks. If errors don't come up and reports aren't made, Saurik will have no clue they even exist.

I guess I'm saying just to have faith in the dev and take some chances. Shi... Stuff happens! :D

Amen...Well said.

I hear you.
When I say bricked not permanently but bricked untill its fully restored and jailbroken again. Then restore all your stuff from backup, sync music etc...
Its a very long process.
I have alot of respect for Saurik and what he has done but lets call a spade what it is. People come in here and blame the user like its his fault that trusted the update and now his phone wont turn back on where a few minutes before it was working fine with the old mobilesubstrate.
Maybe the developer has some responsibility in this too not just the user dont you agree?

I never read a single post blaming the user for his phone getting locked up.

What was said: Beta software & beta software updates are at your own risk
Very few phones are ever permanently bricked except in cases of sudden hardware failure.
Some unexperienced jailbreak community newbie shouldn't be hurling insults at Saurik as the newbie has no idea his JB phone is generally the result of many donated hours of work by Saurik for the benefit of the JB community.

We all generally trust these updates when we hit the upgrade button in Cydia. Yes a few cause issues, but most do not. So I do trust the developers, just as the majority of us do, but if it locks up the phone, you can quickly see who the immature, inexperienced posters are as the profanity and the insults begin to fly. That is why he was criticized and rightly so.

I agree, theres no need for insults or anything like that towards people like Saurik or JB Devs in general.
Lets face it, he is the Man and his hard work and dedication should be appreciated by all of us.
If you read though some where taking shots at people who complained about their mishap and blaming it fully on them saying next time dont install MS and its addons or if you do and it locks up dont complain.

Most of us would complain, I think we would just be a whole lot more mature about the method of doing so.

Hopefully, the OP learned some from this experience in case he/she gets another update which performs poorly.

I certainly didn't assign any fault for anyone's problems in this thread. That is my entire point: these things happen when you run alpha software, and it is not anyone's 'fault.' I never said s2darth was to blame for his troubles, only that he assumed the risks when he installed the software. On the other hand, Saurik is no more to blame than s2darth, and his criticism of Saurik was childish and completely uncalled for.

And, yes, if alpha software trashes either your computer or iPhone, you don't have any right to complain. That's the risk you took by installing it.

I still disagree with you.
An average user wont know its alpha or whatever kind of software. He will just hit upgrade.
I think the responsibility lies on both the user and developer and not just the user.

I just updated tonight and it locked up my phone. I didnt read the whole thread came here to research after it happened to me. I was fully up to date on all firmwares just jb the phone again a week or so ago. The apple logo comes up for like 10secs then leaves. Still messing with it. If this was resolved please reply to this. I will read over the thread but I am trying stuff as I go. Thanks

I refuse to do this update. My phone is running too good for a simple update to take me back. No dice!

Finally got tired of staring at the badge indicating updates avail., and went ahead and updated MobileSubstrate. Sweated through the long 4-5minutes on the Apple logo on reboot and had to reset network settings to get wifi working, but otherwise seems ok.
Now if I could just get rid of the frequent signal drops which are apparently associated with the blacksn0w unlock. Those are driving me (and people that call me) crazy.

MS iOS4 UPDATE NOT WORKING DO NOT UPDATE

hi,

I recently updated to the new MS in cydia (version 0.93209-1) and it puts my iPod Touch into safe mode everytime. I have done everything (except restore :p) and nothing works please help me if anybody knows!

SB12

I updated my 3GS running 3.1.2 and in Cydia I got an error about my cellular signal and then it went into a spinning ball loop. I had to do a hard reboot, but after that it's been fine.

3GS 3.1.3 here and I had the same thing happen. After the update, I restarted Springboard (as directed to do), it went into the spinning ball loop and I had to do a hard reset. As with the poster above, that worked and it's been working fine ever since as well.

I'm not saying I don't have ANY respect for him. I'm just saying that level went down. Com'on if you make an update and it causes the phone to brick - that's pretty much a fail in my book.

And yes - this update definitely does brick some phones, that's the reason why this thread was created in the first place. After you hit the reboot button in cydia the phone hangs on the apple boot screen and shuts off. I'm using a 32gb 3gs 3.1.2 with blackra1n.

Yea I tried not to update blindly but again the dev doesn't even specify what this update does. And I'm not going to google every single update I do for everything.'

and YES - if you create an update that bricks some phones you should (and deserve to) be bashed at least...

are you just plain stupid? Jay does all of these things for all iphone users, so they can get their devices full potential. ITs not like u frikcen bought it from him:mad: he does not take donations, and is ALWAYS trying to help us out.
why dont you go and code hundreds of lines to works with a system that a well known company designed? EH:rolleyes:

its really hard, there was no problems on his idevice. u still have DFU, so its not a brick.

EDIT: who revived this thread. I didn't see the date, and my inner anger was released lol
