I think I'm leaning towards both models coming out. A mass market 4s model for China etc. & iphone 5 the likes of us sheep. A mere update after all this time would see many jump ship & join Android,but an ipad 2 like iphone 5 that you can actually make calls on, would be awesome. I am one those people waiting & if they just come with a 4s update,I'm buying a white Galaxy S2 the day after the conference,or I'll be queing up for a design classic with the fanboys....

A quick note for all you people going on about activation over the air, do you seriously think that in a mass production manufacturing situation Apple would use wireless over cable? Also when the phone are produced they have a testing image installed which is then replaced with the real image.
As I've told you before 2 phones are in development/production. The production ramp ups are well and truly underway and understand that as part of the manufacturing process the testing and IOS installation on the devices is the very last thing before they are put in boxes and shipped. So just because IOS 5 isn't GM'd yet doesn't mean they aren't manufacturing the hardware of the phones

I think the 4s rumours are just to throw everyone off the scent. Apple has been rediculously good at covering up everything this year. It is strange there hasn't been anything leaked about the new form factor, especially when you think of all the different manufacturers, but perhaps they (apple) has really locked everything down on pain of death.

I highly doubt this will be the physical look of the new iPhone.
The grill ambient/proximity sensor at the top is that of the prototype iPhone 4s. By now they've clearly used other covers for production i4s and my prototype's grill sensor absolutely sucks in outside lighting conditions.

The display is def aftermarket the head phone jack appears to be black and resembles the leaked ones we had seen posted earlier on this site which leads me to believe that it might possibly be an iPhone 4s/5 with an aftermarket display I wish someone could find out what the memory specs are of the phone in the picture that way we would know for sure..

I'm afraid Jody Foster said it best. The simplest answer is usually the right one. No clues of any kind about the iPhone 5 and lots of clues about the iPhone 4S. You put it together. But keep it simple.
Don't think, if we get a redesigned model, that we will see a bevel anywhere. I'm hoping for aluminium unibody and edge to edge screen...

I call fake, I thought they said you don't need iTunes to set-up anymore, that you can use the iPhone with iOS 5 straight out of the box

I didn't say announce, just release and it wouldn't be almost a year, 9 months to be precise for the 5 (redesign) and back into schedule. They will announce the 4S or 4G or whatever they want to call it in October and start shipping anywhere from two weeks up to two months after like they did with the new TB displays, that will put them around the christmas shopping season and wait til march-April to announce the redesigned 5 and ship it in June.
I take it then that you thought Apple's naming of the 3Gs was "dumb" as well. 4S has only caught on because historically it makes sense to call it that.
An iDevice still needs plugged into iTunes to restore if iOS gets corrupted, even with iOS 5. Btw, that iPhone is in Recovery Mode, not the activation prompt.
Could this have been the A5 iPhone 4 given out to the game devs earlier this year? It sure seems like it.
