it could also be one of those iphones on the a5 they rumored to be making for developers.....

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but I found something in the picture that proves it is NOT iPhone 4S: the device is still running iOS 4 since iOS 5 does NOT require iTunes connexion.

This really could be anything.

We know that Apple prototypes dozens if not hundreds of designs.

This could be the fifth-generation iPhone installed in the case of the iPhone 4 as a pre-production unit. Or if Apple isn't changing the case, this could be one of the final design candidates of the iPhone 5.

This could be a reworked iPhone 4 -- what everyone seems to want to call the 4S -- although it doesn't look like this would be a lower cost device.

Of course, this could be some elaborate hoax.

The fact that it appears to be running iOS 4 means nothing. It is probable that Apple uses both a stable version of the current iOS software as well as betas of the next generation iOS during the design and testing phases of the new device.

Anyone noticed there's a Gevey or another kind of TurboSim in the Sim Tray with the AT&T SIM card?

Nice catch! And since iOS 5 defeats the Gevey, one would need to load iOS 4 to use the Gevey.

But if they are using a Gevey then this is a locked device. And would spare parts be locked???

I continue to believe there are 2 phones being introduced. Given that assumption, there is quit a lot of stuff Apple is tackling in a single launch: iPhone 5, iPhone 4S, Addition US carrier(s), iCloud and iTunes Match (including firing up their new data center), iOS 5, iCloud integration into Lion (which itself was released only 2 months ago), iCloud support in Windows... whew.

That's really pushing things pretty hard all at once. The delay makes perfect sense in that context. Plus, Jobs resigned just a month before the launch is to happen.

The iCloud backend depends on Amazon and MS Azure. If you don't believe me, look it up.

And if there is a firmware error or the device cannot boot... what happens then?

whoever came up with the dumb "4S" name earlier this year should be shot in the face btw. its based on no knowledge and somehow it made its way all over the internet

Blame Apple.... they went with 3G and 3GS.

On the other had, let's spread the rumor that they call it 4G - would fit if the new one supports 4G and then next year, they can come with the iPhone 5 and the 4GS as cheap phone!

I know, you hope for a new design for the next phone and I do, too. But all these leaks are not really conclusive if there is something else coming. N94 seems to be confirmed and for me does not warrant an upgrade from my iPhone 4 LTE, yet. Besides, upgrading right now would be too expensive anyways.

All things considered...

• The tapered case leaks are, and always have been, for the next gen iPod touch. Not the next gen iPhone.

• The next gen iPod touch will offer the same face plate dimension as the current iPod touch, but favor an aluminum backside (as opposed to "chrome") and will "apparently" be tapered..

• The next gen iPhone will offer the same face plate dimension as iPhone 4, but favor an aluminum backside (as opposed to glass), may be a mm or two thinner and the HomeButton will be wider like the next gen iPod touch. The "thinner" + "wider Home button" help ensure Apple and the third parties still make their millions as everyone is forced to upgrade their cases and other 3rd party accessories. There's just too much $$$ to be made to NOT offer some (even minor) hardware tweak(s). Easy $.

• The A5 chip and 8 megapixel camera seem all but certain for the next gen iPhone. Does this mean the next gen iPod touch sees the same processor/camera combo or adopts the current iPhone 4 chip/camera specs?

• I suspect the shift from the iPhone's traditional June release to an October release points more towards taking advantage of the holiday shopping season than any "production issues." I also think this might be the first, in a line of a few, Cookisms. Just a hunch. Regardless, each device will sell like hot cakes and AAPL will soar.

• Can't wait to see how wrong I am. ;)

Like I said, because it costs money to let the 4s just sit there.

Not unless it's going to a lot of new carriers. Why sell newer, more expensive tech at (presumably the 99 price point) when you can sell the same existing tech for that same price?

Definitely not the first to point that out.

Why does the second high resolution image found on the homepage have a black headphone port even though its a white iphone?...

Ok, you are running on the assumption the 4s DOESN'T exist.

Assuming the 4s DOES exist and stock is sitting ready to be sold, then it needs to get announced, delivered, and sold ASAP. Every day it sits in a warehouse costs Apple money.

And to address your cost concerns, it's very possible that Apple has been able to get the new components down in cost to be less than the current model. Especially if they can bring their manufacturing down to single common components...such as a single processor like the A5 assuming the yield is high.

This is looking like a CDMA motherboard to me... maybe with a photoshopped A5 processor, and the old white digitizer assembly, like my iPhone 4 prototype.

It has a SIM slot, which the CDMA does not have

If I recall correctly wasn't the headphone jack design different in the presumably leaked iPhone 5 pictures? The inside looked sort of slanted and it said that it was going to be different than the previous version?
* The picture was posted on MR but I couldn't find the post.

Also can't this be an unassembled white iPhone 4 with an iPad 2 A5 chip?

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; CPU iPhone OS 5_0 like Mac OS X) AppleWebKit/534.46 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/5.1 Mobile/9A5313e Safari/7534.48.3)

I repair iPhones daily and by the look of that display it is a cheap aftermarket. Look at the prox sensor.

Correct Prediction

Anyone else figured out that the iPhone 4 looking model is actually the new updated iPhone, and that the supposed iPhone 5 skinny model is a data-only iPhone/iPod Touch hybrid?
