I've still no idea why they've decided on a 7.85" screen size. I've been eagerly waiting for a smaller iPad to replace my Kindle but I would have thought a 6" screen in 4:3 format would be more comfortable to hold with one hand. Oh well hopefully I'll understand more when I see it for real. I hope they bring out some nice leather cases so I can hold it like a book.

Right, because all men use their iPads for productive tasks, and all women just want to play cutesy games and put sparkly pink cases on them, right? Comments that make huge generalizations like this are really annoying. More women probably will buy it...and and the main reasons will be that it's lighter, easier to carry and will fit much more easily into a purse or bag.

OMG, thank you for saying this, and for saying it so well!

I just finished a walk around my house ranting (to myself) about this exactly. I'm a man that wants this form factor (and I'm not a small man), what does that make me?

Maybe it'll appeal more to other men if they include a free wood axe or power tool with every iPad Mini purchased?

And at least one man.

Are you suggesting that they would come out with a product that makes them less money than an existing product? Hmmm... do nothing, make more profit, do something, make less profit plus cannibalise an existing product line. I'm not familiar with their having done that before.

Oh, so they totally didn't slash the prices of the iPad 2.

A little more? So "double" in America now means "a little more"?

Gotta try it at McDonalds
"Hey, gimme a little more cheeseburger."

That might work... :p

I loled.

----------

does it come with sandpaper to sand you fingers down:D:D:D

Not that long ago everyone here berated all the 7" android tablets, oh how times have changed!!!!!

As usually with ifans. "Oh, but THEY DIDN'T DO IT RIGHT.Apple did. It's 7.54''...not 7.53''"

It'll come down to price for me. The only reason to get this is for it to replace my Kindle Touch. If it's ~$199 then I'll probably bite. Too much more and I can't see spending that much on what will primarily be an e-reader. I can keep reading comics on my iPhone (which will have a bigger screen).

Girl power rocks.

I'll be getting an iPad Mini mainly because I want something a bit lighter and more comfortable to hold when I'm reading a book on the train. Hopefully they will also give it an anti-glare screen so I can also sit and read in the garden.

ipad is too close in size to my 11" mba and doesn't do quite enough to justify itself in addition to it. Mini is perfect for taking with me when mba stays at home and the iphone is too small to be productive with. As an e-reader i'll stick with my kindle - no brainer there.

+1

of course it doesnt go for all women, but its the majority. i mean how many women are going to DL high end iOS graphic games? they would be in the minority.

most girls can careless if its retina or not, what kind of processor it has, or how much ram it will hold. theyll prob care about diskspace but yea.

i dont think my statement was so out of the question

The majority of PEOPLE play silly games, surf the web, look at Facebook, etc. etc. It's not just women. The majority of PEOPLE don't care what kind of processor it has or how much RAM it will hold. You seem to forget that the people here at MacRumors are not a sampling of the general population. This is a very specific subset of people who really care about technology. We're geeks, generally speaking. The majority of the population isn't. Your statement is a generalization based on gender. Yes, more men than women are technology geeks. But that doesn't mean that the only people that would buy an iPad Mini are women because they don't know how to use technology for anything important. And it doesn't mean that there's not a ton of guys that use their overpowered MBPs to surf the web and do stuff on Facebook. Oh, and don't forget looking at porn...that too.

Generalizations like that suck. End of rant.

:p

I will buy this at once! I've been looking for a tablet but 499 is just too much. Bring forth 199-249 price point!

Porns not good on iPads anywho. They redirect you to their 'pay' sites.:D

I've still no idea why they've decided on a 7.85" screen size.

A 7.85" is the size where iPad touch targets scale down to the size of iPhone touch targets. In other words it's the smallest size where Apple has the proven usability for the existing apps.

I've been eagerly waiting for a smaller iPad to replace my Kindle but I would have thought a 6" screen in 4:3 format would be more comfortable to hold with one hand.

I was also interested to see whether they do a scaled up iPhone but instead they went with the smaller iPad path. I doubt Apple will do a 6" until they have a better idea on how to handle the app compatibility issue.

hmmmm, if i see one reading that book, i wonder what my success rate would be

Depends on what you look like:

I'd reckon he^^^^ is gonna have a 200% success rate!:D

I reckon bucket loads of females will buy the iPad Mini.

Everyday on the train commuting into work I notice loads of females with Amazon Kindles. I think they prefer the form factor and weight over the existing iPads.

:)

Or they have broke boyfriends.

Exactly!

For all the folks, talking about a retina ipad mini, it won't happen this go around. 1) They haven't put retina on any first gen device. 2) One of the major points of the mini is the price point, to make the apps work u have 2 options 1024x768 or 2048x1536. The later would be prohibitively expensive and give it a higher pixel density than the full size ipad. 3) At 1024x768 it will still have a higher pixel density then the first and 2nd gen ipad. Retina will happen eventually on the mini just not yet.

They're not changing the aspect ratio so the apps will still work, this thing will be able to use 99% of ipad 1 and 2 apps no problem.

If anyone could beat everyone on price point apple could with their massive economies of scale advantage. Not saying they will since they love their margins but they could.

Do we honestly even need retina @ that size? I still think the iPad 2's resolution was plenty good.
