i ordered my 15" pb a week ago online; it said it would be shipped before or on july 18(yesterday). so i got this email today, which says the guy on the phone said, it could be a sign for a new model. i don't know what to think :D

Probably some deal with the shipping company.

But then again... maybe not. :D

Probably yours was just a one in a thousand kindda case or smth?

Or maybe not. :D

I swear Im about to go pc if apple doesnt update these things by next tuesday how the f*** do they expect people to pay the same for an ibook that was payed out almost a year ago now and everyone knows how fast a computer goes out of date... what do people think of linux??

Linux is pretty good. There are some "weak" points though. One, the hibernation and power saving modes are not going to be as strong as OSX or Windows. Second, you're not going to have most software available for Linux. It depends on your needs. I can get most scientific software I need for Linux, but getting Photoshop is not going to happen (though they have free "similar" software you can use).

So no new iBooks this week. The eMac before the current update waited 13 months to get an update. Powerbooks are due for hitting the average in 2 weeks. Lets set the new iBook/Powerbook update day as August 2nd, 2 weeks from today. Just in time for Back to school.

Someone posted an email from the Europe Apple Web Editor on the forums a few days ago, that on August 2nd Apple will start the 'free ipod mini with a mac' for students promotion in Europe.

To Apple: Grrr

So, Apple, how's it going? Good? Cool, cool.

So, about these iBooks... A few weeks ago, I decided that today was the day I'd buy my iBook. After all, I thought, why would I want to wait for weeks and weeks without any sign of an update?

So I put a reminder in my phone. It's just gone off. "Buy an iBook today, unless there's a really good reason to wait", it says.

Damn you, Apple: If you'd just quietly gone on and nothing'd happened, I'd have bought an iBook today. If you'd have refreshed the line today, I'd have been over the moon. But you've done neither of those.

You raised the delivery times on iBooks and Minis so we thought there would be an update, but then you didn't release one. Is that "a really good reason to wait"? I don't know: it seems like it is, but I understand that the Mini had the same problem a while back, and that didn't result in an update (and the rumour sites were going on at that time, too).

So, Apple, what should I do? Wait, or not wait? Spoon or no spoon?

What I think I'm going to do is to wait until you get your stock back under control, or refresh the iBooks, whichever comes first. But I'm determined not to become one of those sad, miserable, iBook-waiters.

Oh, wait...

The real reason to wait is not the longer shipping times IMO. Those go up and down. The Think Secret article does imply that an update is imminent though. Doesn't look like today anymore, but they are usually right.

Whilst Apple are dithering around with their laptop line, IBM actually do release a new laptop - http://www.theinquirer.net/?article=24739

2.1GHz Pentium M on 533MHz bus
1GB Memory
60GB 7200RPM
DVD/CDRW
15" 1600x1200 128MB VRAM
5.1 hours
2.3kg / 5lbs
$3229

Compares well to a 15" PowerBook specced to the save memory and drive
1.66GHz G4 on 166MHz bus / 1GB memory (1 dimm) / 80GB 5400RPM / DVD/CDRW / 15" 1280x768 (yes, the IBM has twice the number of pixels, but isn't wide) / 128 MB VRAM / 5.6lbs
$2,599

or the 17" (to get the better 'pixel space' than the above)
1.66GHz / 166MHz / 1GB / 80GB / DVDRW / 17" 1440x900 / 128MB / 6.9lbs
$2,949

I wish Apple would try to compete in more ways than just 'ooh, our software and design are better'.

Maybe next tuesday will be the day. The PowerBooks are approaching the end of there cycle. So it kinda makes sense to update them both @ the same time, so there specs won't be too close to each other.

Oh well, I'm ordering my 15" 1.67 in a while, so I'll be happy. That should last me until the Intel PB's are released.

at wat point...?

at wat point today can i say "ok, thats it, the ibooks will not be updated today."?

Yeah, Apple has absolutely nothing that can compete with the Lenovo Thinkpad X41 Tablet PC... I found myself looking at this cute sexy thing more than once...

Linux on laptop = forget wlan on most of the models. Linux porks with IBM pretty good, rest suck.

Well MacRumors has just restated whats on ThinkSecret's webpage. If the news is legit enough to republish, I'll buy in. Would it be more likely for next tueday then this thursday? What are everyone's opinions on that?

Wlan works fairly well. You just need to be careful with which model you get. The Intel 2200 for instance is a good choice.

Going for over 6 months with out updating a laptop or any other computer is basically suicide for a computer company. New products are supposed to come out every 6 months or faster. This is plain stupidity on Apple's part.

While I totally agree that it has been too long since the last refresh, it doesn't seem to be hurting Apple's sales or marketshare one bit, as it's been rising steadily now for the past year. Notebook sales last quarter were the highest they've ever been in company history. So the lack of updates have definitely not been suicidal in the least.

It may not be hurting Apple's sales at all, but think how much it would increase Apple's sales if they did refresh. There are probably 500 members on this site alone that are waiting to buy.

Agreed. I think this could be a great quarter for Apple, if they update the iBooks and Mac Minis, within the next two weeks. Back to school season, so people will be buying portables, iPods, etc. I hope it is a good quarter for Apple, I want to see another awesome conference call in October, despite the conservative guidance Apple provided last week.

Another wednesday - another load of rubbish on the UK Applestore clearance page.

Why do apple even bother with this page in the UK? - there's rarely anything worth mentioning on it.

A bit of a contrast to the US store that has just about every apple product going.

Apple has a very well established user base in the UK but rarely seems to make an effort to support us. No Cram and Jam etc [although there is a rumour that this starts in the UK on Aug 2nd.]

Come on Apple you are supposed to be an international brand. Stop being so USCentric. When Steve Jobs famously said "Stop selling fizzy sugar water and come an change the world with me" did he mean just the US?

This has nothing to do with iBooks/PowerBooks but I just checked the Refurb UK store, and well I'm quite impressed by the PowerMac G5s they have on there. £680 ex Vat for a single 1.8Ghz is pretty darn good for any business.

I was trying to point out that there was a complete lack of ibooks and pbooks in the UK Refurb Store - don't think I've ever seen any.
