Do you think they'll update this week, or even today?

Well, according to the ThinkSecret article, the iBooks SHOULD be updated either later today or sometime this week. If not this week then almost certainly next week. ThinkSecret is usually correct on their rumors, but still, I don't know. I'm just hoping like the rest of us.

That article was up yesterday. So "today" should not be taken to mean Wednesday. But obvious sometime this week would include Wednesday.

Well if you look at the Buyer's guide at the past announcements, they take place either at around 8:30AM, 8:45AM, 10:15AM, 10:34AM. All Eastern time. Still have 2 more hours. If not today then who knows what Tuesday.

I think this quote a few pages back should help

oh forget it. I'm tired of this BS. I'm going to buy a dell.

Go ahead. Dell's quality has been going down the drain lately. Both my bro and sis have Dells. Both have been needin a lot of fixin in the 1 and 2 years that they had them, respectively. Sure the prices are enticing. But you pay for what you get. Just like American vs Japanese cars. American car companies (Dell) offer huge incentives (30% off, $750 off $1499, etc) just to sell there crap on to the consumer. Japanese car companies (other PC mfg in this analogy like Sony and IBM) sell their products much close to sticker without the incentives and do pretty well. If a company offers huge discounts, simply don't buy from them because they know their product is crap and just want to sell huge quantities. I prefer to buy from slightly more expensive niche brands like Apple because they offer the better product.

Another analogy. You could buy Gillette grooming supplies and help support David Beckhams $100 million dollar contract or buy like I do from smaller companies like Baxter of California and MenScience which cost more but put more money into developing a much better product.

Sure, if by lately you mean the last 10 years.

While I don't advocate buying Gillette...you can't argue they don't spend money on research. They spend close to a billion dollars alone just developing mach3.

er, i think you guys have become apple fanatics.

i've had this dell computer from 2001 and it still runs fine.

the only reason why i'm going with apple is ebcause i like the computer's design, and OS X's aesthetic appeal.

you can't just say the computer's going to stop working after 2-3 years, that's just b.s.

are you saying that the old dos computers from the 80s don't work still?

i didn't know that pcs spontaneously combust.

I have to argue that Mac quality has gone down alot as well... I remember when the Newton and other mac portables were made in japan... you could totally feel the quality... and although macs still are quality products compared to PCs... they have definetly lost quality.. just look at the ibook, the keyboard and plastic is pretty weak....

I bought a powerbook a few weeks ago and I ended up with 3 DOAs in a row.... dead dvd drive, dead had, and a warped frame.... thats why i'm waiting for the ibook... no point in paying for premium when its not really a premium... if i'm gonna get a crappy computer, i might as well pay less for it.... now i'm suck with a gig of ram that i mght not be able to use on the ibook....

now comparing the dell to mac.. of course the mac is alot better... its amost 50% more expensive.... but my piont is that mac quality has gone down alot these days as well...

Yes, but the quality of everything has gone down. It's now about how cheap they can make something, so they get more profit in the end. Noone cares about the consumers (unless the law forces them to) anymore. Look at cars for example the ones from 70's and 80's are built much better, use better parts , get more gas milage, and last longer than the ones today. Heck My car and my computer are the only things i've owned that have lasted me longer than a a year. They just don't make quality like they used to anymore. Its all about money. :D Money, money money. :D

i could get two cheap dell laptops with the latest technology and keep them for 2 years each, and still have a better deal than the apple ibook that i keep for 4 years.

apple has good technology, but has no flexibility whatsoever. If you need DVI or dual screens, you need a powerbook, and pay 500 dollars extra for that even though the iBook is quite capable of it.

the IBM to Intel switch just means that Apple is becoming more corrupted like Microsoft, when Jobs said that they were switching to Intel because IBM couldn't produce a low-voltage G5 Chip for the powerbook. Well lookey now, there's a low-voltage g5 and it compares very well to the Pentium M.

The RAM should work fine. The PB and iBook use the same RAM except the PB is faster. It's very doubtful they'd update the iBook to use faster RAM than the PB currently uses.

That's sort of comparing apples and oranges (no pun intended). Dell has a few system that sort of stack up nicely against the Apple offering. You could compare the 600m with the 14" iBook and the 700m sort of with the 12" iBook. They're not perfect matches or anything. And it's also not like they are half price. You can get a 600m for maybe $800 that is nicely setup. The 700m is probably a little more. That's quoting good deals on the Dell's. My point is, it's not like they are half price. They are definitely cheaper.

Now, yes you can get some bargain basement laptops, but that's not really a fair comparison. Apple really doesn't have the bargain basement laptop that Dell has. The iBook is sort of a mid grade laptop when looking at the Dells.

On what do you base the statement that the low voltage g5 compares very well to the pentium M? just curious.

Yiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiippppeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

I just got a call from a friend who, will remain anonymous, who works at a computer store specializing in Apple products. He knows I've been waiting for months for an ibook update, so he thought he'd call and let me know that the store just got notified by Apple that NEW IBOOKS WILL BE COMING OUT NEXT WEEK!!! My friend is not the kind of guy to play with my heart strings, so unless someone was prank calling the store and somehow convinced the manager that they were an Apple rep, I'd say it's pretty certain that the update will be here before the end of next week.

Hooray!

Really for a different thread, but I too have my cynical left eye open on this move. I feel IBM were as surprised as we were when they announced they were moving.

Also, I will be buying an iBook because it's a mac, so in that respect you can't compare better deal than a dell. However, big However, in terms of computer, a Dell Inspiron 6000 for less than an iBook is much better technology and an amazing widescreen 15" high res screen. If only it was a Mac, because I really would buy one!

I really can't stand when people are sooo impatient like this. iBooks are bound to be out VERY soon becasue of all of the recent rumors, and why would it even cross your mind to buy a XP notebook???

Even if this isn't true, and of course I believe you, all the signs are pointing to an imminent ibook update either this or next week. With the increasing shipping times and the think secret rumor, the signs have never been stronger. So just hang in there a few more days, guys. I wouldn't consider getting a dell because I want an Apple no matter what. That's why I'm waiting. And buying one now unless you truly need it would be positively idiotic in light of the current rumors.

By all means, buy your ibook or your xpbook, or $1200 worth of unsalted peanuts, if that's what you want to do! :) I, however, think it's worth waiting at least another week and a half. Sure we've had posts like mine before, and I dont' expect anyone to take a post as gospel- relying on one anonymous informant who reports information from another anonymous informant who, for all you know, doesn't exist would be silly. But the fact is, Thinksecret also is reporting the same thing, and they not only have a better contacts, but a reputation to look out for and a track record to uphold.

So if you need/want to buy today, go ahead, but in the last few months of studying these forums, this is the first time that I personally have felt that there is a strong reason to expect anything.

I don't blame you for doubting, though, we've all had our hopes up before, and we all know the sting of dissapointment. Still, this is a rumor forum, so I'd feel remiss if I didn't post what I believe is a credible rumor from a reliable source.

Sorry to be so long winded. Happy buying!

This is why Apple hates rumor sites. Someone makes a prediction about new iBooks coming, then we all get pissed off when it doesn't happen. Sucks that they aren't here yet, but that's the way it is. Maybe the move to Intel will ameliorate the issue, but who knows. You want an iBook or PowerBook, but one. If you can wait, wait. If you're just going to keep waiting forever, you'll never get anything. They may update tomorrow, may not until September. Who knows. I wouldn't recommend you buy a PC, but if that's what floats yor boat, I'm not going to stop you just because the Radeon 9200 can't do the ripple effect.

And for those complaining about the suckiness of the G4, um... that's why they're moving to Intel.

Apple could easily put a stop to rumor sites if they wanted to.... all that it would require is announcing product release dates in advance. Every car company in the world comes out with new models in the fall every year. I know computers are different, and they feel the element of surprise is profitable, but in that case rumor sites are just going to go along with the deal like flies on feces.

I dont remember any of the rumor sites saying that there will be an iBook update other than the rumor that just occured on Thinksecret.com. There have been people who come onto the forums and says things like "my brothers best friends wife's tennis partner is Steve Jobs and he says G5 ibook tomorrow with 4.5 Gig processors and 50Gigs of RAM standard for $149. There are few people who believe these stupid rumors that occur in the forums (that are not officially posted). The most dissapointment comes from every tuesday and everytime the shipping goes up. Rumor sites are not responsible for people jumping to conclusions at every change of the apple website.
