Apple could easily put a stop to rumor sites if they wanted to.... all that it would require is announcing product release dates in advance.

LOL.

No.
You think announcing products in advanced would magically eliminate rumour sites?? Well what about the rumors of unannounced products? Apple has the cult status and because of that people will always be looking for the latest rumors on their activities, and with that demand, there will always be websites willing to supply. This has been said before but, early announcements only cause trouble because they can often be met with delays/let downs. And then people (investors) have a real reason to be pissed off, because it actually came from Apple's mouth. If its coming from the rumor sites, people have no one to be pissed at but themselves for getting their hopes up for the stupid rumors in the first place.

I just got a call from a friend who, will remain anonymous, who works at a computer store specializing in Apple products. He knows I've been waiting for months for an ibook update, so he thought he'd call and let me know that the store just got notified by Apple that NEW IBOOKS WILL BE COMING OUT NEXT WEEK!!! My friend is not the kind of guy to play with my heart strings, so unless someone was prank calling the store and somehow convinced the manager that they were an Apple rep, I'd say it's pretty certain that the update will be here before the end of next week.

Hooray!

I for one am going to stand beside Spellflower on this one and believe they are coming out next week. There are just too many rumors and hints circulating for it to not be next week. Spellflower and me can bask in the glory of the prospect of new ibooks while the rest of you can continue to complain and try to discredit these rumors, as you all seem to be so fond of this practice anyway.

On that same note, I am going to be a switcher when the ibooks do get refreshed but I want to know, are all Apple fans this jaded? No one believes anything they hear and everyone is so pessimistic. It seems like everyone wants to prove rumors wrong more than they want to believe in them. I am not saying that we have to be overly optimistic about a few small rumors, but can't we atleast take the facts as they come and analyze the situation to the best of our abilities?

I am with you guys as well. :) I couldn't have said it better myself jmmdg6! The only thing different about us is that I have already made the switch almost 2 months ago with a Mac mini. Man, you are going to love it!! It's great! I can wait to get my new Apple product - an Apple iBook G4! (updated of course!) :D

I'm guessing tomorrow at 8:00am EST. Hey, my guess is as good as any other here. SJ.

And for those complaining about the suckiness of the G4, um... that's why they're moving to Intel.

IBM has low-voltage G5s that are equivalent to the Pentium Ms.

Average time for an ibook to be updated -158 days.
Number of days since the last update of the ibook - 274 days
Days overdue for an ibook update - 116.

i rest my case.

I don't think this is true. One rumor about swtiching to intel was that Apple was interested in the Pentium M chip.

http://www.macworld.com/2005/06/features/intelchips/index.php

Pentium M

Designed for: Laptops

Some think that the 32-bit Pentium M is what Apple was really after from Intel in the short term. The Pentium M isn’t based on the P4 core; it’s a separate animal that does a lot more work per clock cycle. Available in clock speeds from 1.5- to 2.13GHz, it easily outperforms the G4 found in Apple’s fastest notebooks and offers wonderfully parsimonious power consumption. Pentium M notebooks regularly last more than five hours on a single battery charge—something iBook and Powerbook users can currently only dream of.

That means that the next set of Pentium Ms (codenamed "Yonah") that will likely be in the Mactel PowerBooks will be better than what a PowerBook G5 would be. The only thing it will be missing is 64-bit support, which is no big deal.

Umm...the last time I checked iBooks could last 6 hours on a single charge.
 Where did that come from???

just got mine!

I just picked it up!
12" combo drive iBook, 1.2G Crucial RAM, 80 G HD, and a free ipod! i love it i love it i love it. update be damned!

That's only Apple's claim though. I still get about 4.5 to 5 hours on my iBook though.

Much like I can get 5 hours from my Powerbook. Best I've got on continuous use is about 3.5 hours.

and the only pc laptops that go over 3.5 hours (all pc laptops get like 3.0-3.5 if carrying pentium m), are the ultraportables which get like 5 hours --- same as an ibook.

a new g4 lower wattage (for the ibook) and g5 lower wattage powerbook would kick ass

Isn't it pretty much believed that the iphone will be released Monday. WOuldn't it make sense to have something backing that up the next day, heance the ibook update.

who gives a damn about this 500,000,000 event. I don't. Only Amy does.

A note on G5 Power Consumption

A few people here have been saying that the G5 can do low power just as well as the Pentium M, and others have been saying that the Pentium M is better, etc.

A 90nm Pentium M has a TDP of 27W. However this does include their 2.1GHz Pentium Ms.

Now look on page 19 of http://www-306.ibm.com/chips/techlib/techlib.nsf/products/PowerPC_970_and_970FX_Microprocessors - PowerPC 970FX Datasheet

1.6GHz @ 1V = 21W maximum power use, typical 17W.

The G5 is still losing out on the typical however, I don't think it has the power states that the Pentium M has which allow it to get an average power consumption of 10W or thereabouts because it clocks down as well as cutting the voltage - clocking down to 600MHz and 0.8V or something can seriously reduce power consumption! If the G5 supported this, then you could see it dropping down to 1GHz at under 10W for a 1.6GHz+ G5.

Typically there are enough processors that could reach a speed grade or two higher than the documented speeds to feed Apple. So take that to mean 1.8GHz and 2.0GHz Power Optimised G5s.

Oh, and Intel's 64-bit Merom processor (follow up to Yonah) could be released as early as Q3 2006. Oddly enough, that matches reasonably well with the start of Apple's switch to Intel.

Reason 1,243 for waiting for a new ibook

If it takes this long for new ibooks to come out - it's not going to be out of date for a long time! (now I've said that they'll update in 4 months i bet!!!)

There aren't and there will never be any new powerbooks / ibooks before the intel ones come out. Deal with it if you want one buy one now. Otherwise shut up and wait.

I'd say there's a pretty good chance the iBooks will be updated before June 2006 . . .

Hate to burst your venomous bubble, macmanmatty, but that's simply not true. Not by anyone's estimation. Things are looking quite good for next Tuesday...

Yes there will 1 last revision for both the Powerbook and iBook before the Intel versions come out. Also expect the PowerMac and Mini to get Power PC upgrades soon as well. The next few weeks, we will see the iBook, Powerbook, and Mini updated followed by a late fall upgrade to the PowerMac. Anybody that does not think that these upgrades will occur is a fool.

iBooks, maybe, but a PB update is wishful thinking. Hey, we can all hope and wish and wish. But it ain't happening. I want to be as optimistic as you, but PB's won't be updated until October at the earliest. They're supposed to be a "prosumer" computer so Apple could care less if they're out for sale for back-to-school season or not. PB's are rustic, museum pieces now. Let those suckers corrode until then.

It could be mid 2006 before the intel portables come out. You don't really think Apple would go 20 months without updating the ibooks, do you?
